Here’s your first trailer for the 3D re-release of James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Incredibly, the groundbreaking special effects of the 1991 sci-fi classic still hold up to this day. T2 is also one of the ultra-rare sequels that most believe surpasses the original. Between Arnold Schwarzennegger’s iconic performance as the T-800, mind-blowing CGI, and relentless action set pieces, T2 is essential viewing for sci-fi fans.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day was such a visionary effort that barely any of its visuals would even need updating for a modern audience. The T-1000, especially, still looks stunningly convincing for a nearly 30-year-old special effect. But for the upcoming 3D re-release of Cameron’s classic blockbuster, due out in August, the director has assembled a team to clean up and remaster each individual frame of the film before converting it to 3D for is return to theaters.

Fans can get their first taste of how Terminator 2: Judgment Day 3D is going to look in the new trailer, released on Thursday by distributor Distrib Films. You can watch the trailer in the video above. It features a number of clips from the film, some with noticeable updates to the effects — including a shot from the post-apocalyptic battle in the opening sequence.

The painstaking 3D restoration process took almost a year, according to Distrib Films’ official website. Cameron’s company Lightstorm Entertainment, whose filmography began with T2 and also includes Titanic and Avatar, oversaw the project from start to finish. Cameron’s team restored the original 35mm cut frame-by-frame to 4K quality. Stereo D (The Fate of the Furious, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) then converted the 4K version of the film to 3D.

T2 3D overall looks markedly sharpened from the original film. T2 is one of the few sci-fi films made in the 20th century that could pass for a film made today, which only speaks further to Cameron’s monumental achievement. The fact that the effects only needed minimal updates and that T2’s transition to 3D appears virtually seamless just goes to show why it’s a landmark in American cinema, regardless of genre.

Despite the great promise of the Terminator 2: Judgment Day 3D trailer, purists and die-hard fans may still be off-put or concerned about the updated effects. For some, it may give too much of a vibe of the controversial “Special Edition” re-release of the original Star Wars trilogy. But it’s unlikely that Cameron created his own “Han shot first” moment, and T2 is simply too thrilling of a ride for any CGI touch-ups to really matter. For any fan of the franchise, T2 3D is a must-see experience.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day 3D is expected to hit theaters on August 25.
