Ryan Reynolds Explains Why Deadpool Saves [SPOILER] in Sequel

In Deadpool 2’s epic mid-credits sequence, Wade Wilson uses Cable’s time-travel device to make some noteworthy, and decidedly meta, corrections to the timeline, and to save a couple of characters who perished in the film. Now Ryan Reynolds has explained why his Merc With a Mouth rescued one of those characters but not the others.

During the movie, Deadpool put in place a typically daring plan to rescue Firefist and avoid Cable by parachuting his newly assembled X-Force out of an aircraft in unfavorable weather conditions. Cue one of Deadpool 2‘s most memorable scenes as Bedlam, Zeitgeist, Vanisher, Shatterstar and (of course) Peter bit the dust in quick succession. Only Zazie Beetz’s Domino survived, or so everyone thought, until the very end.

As the credits rolled, Deadpool used Cable’s time travel technology to save Vanessa and Peter while also retconning maligned movies X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Green Lantern. Speaking to The Empire Film Podcast, Reynolds reveals how Peter was the lucky one.

“I love that he just completely ignores this marquee cast that he could’ve saved of useful and wonderful superheroes,” Reynolds explained, “but instead went back and saved [Peter].”

More than just another joke to fit with the rest of the tone of Deadpool 2, the actor expanded on why Peter’s reprieve was also in line with the movie’s more emotional tone. “Well, here’s the thing, though: I always felt that it was important to save Peter,” Reynolds said. “In the helicopter before we jump, I say to him, ‘I’d never let anything happen to you, sugar bear. I’m just saying this to impress the other guys.’ And we all jump out of the thing.”

Reynold concluded with how he sympathized with the idea that Peter was owed a debt. “I felt like that was a promise that Wade made early on in the movie, and it was nagging him,” he said, “so he went back and got Peter.”

Although Peter may have been the least-useful member of the original X-Force lineup, there was a sense of justice that the simple man who applied for the job because it “looked fun” be one of the few survivors.

As Fox moves forward with Drew Goddard’s X-Force movie and a lineup that will presumably include Deadpool, Cable and Domino, the big question now is, will Rob Delaney get his time to shine once again and return to the role of Peter?

Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 stars Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, and Karan Soni as Dopinder, with newcomers Zazie Beetz as Domino, Josh Brolin as Cable and Julian Dennison as Russell. The film is playing in theaters everywhere.
