Piracy, unregulated practices cost Peru’s pay-TV industry dearly

Recommended Posts

Pay-TV is on the up in Peru, but the industry is losing $236 million each year due to piracy and under-reporting, the Business Bureau has revealed.

According to the analysts, there are 2.96 million pay-TV users in the Andean country, 13% of whom are under-reported. Nearly a fifth of them are getting their services through pirate operators. Just over a third of Peruvian homes subscribe to a pay-TV option and the capital district of Lima has 1.42 million pay-TV households.

Yet despite of the impact of piracy, the Business Bureau forecasts that the market will continue growing over the next four years. At a 2% CAGR, Peru’s pay-TV will total 3.36 million subscribers by the end of 2022.

Regarding operators, Telefónica holds the strongest position in the market, as other reports had also pointed out before. The telco owns almost half of the subscribers’ base and is followed by América Móvil (10.1%), DIRECTV (9.7%), Cablevisión Perú (1.9%) and Best Cable (1.8%).
