Kurtley Beale the X-factor that can reinvigorate Waratahs

KURTLEY Beale is the X-factor that can reinvigorate the Waratahs after their drab effort against the Brumbies last weekend, according to his former teammate Stephen Hoiles.

While the Waratahs’ coaching staff have warned their players to get their heads right after their lacklustre showing in the 40-31 loss to the Brumbies, Hoiles believes Beale is the key to turning things around.

The Wallaby playmaker was stricken with tonsillitis in the lead-up to last weekend’s match and was forced to leave the match early after being unable make his usual impact and Hoiles expects a fully-fit Beale to be the difference in Saturday’s sudden-death quarter-final against the Highlanders.

“The most positive thing for the Tahs is that their biggest players were pretty quiet and you rarely see those guys have two quiet weeks in a row and that’s what gives you a bit of confidence,” Hoiles told The Daily Telegraph.

“Kurtley was crook all last week and it showed but Kurtley is a really influential player in that side so if he fires then he makes everyone else inside and outside of him play a lot better.

“So without trying to pressure on KB but if he has a big game then the Tahs are in with a real shot.”

Hoiles is living proof how quickly players can turn tragedy into triumph after he overcame serious injury to resurrect his own career and play alongside Beale in the Waratahs team that won the Super Rugby title in 2014.

He said it was too early to compare the Waratahs side of 2018 to the champion team of four years ago but thinks the current line-up has the makings of a good side as long as they don’t play like they did last weekend.

“You’d hope they were thinking too far ahead because if that’s the best they can do then they’ll be bounced out this week,” he said.

“I think everyone knows from last week that the quicker the Tahs can get that all out of their head, learn from what they need to learn from but not beat themselves up too much about it, and just turn up with an attitude that they know it’s do or die then they’re a chance.”

Had the Waratahs beaten the Brumbies, they would have been hosting the Jaguares in the quarters but are now facing the Highlanders, and Hoiles knows from experience how that can end if they aren’t switched on.

The last playoff Super Rugby match the Waratahs hosted was also against the Highlanders, in 2015. The Waratahs were strong favourites but were soundly beaten in what turned out to be Hoiles’ last match as a professional player.

“In all honesty it’s probably a week where the Tahs don’t have to worry too much about the other team because they did so much wrong on their own side of things, they’ve just got to fix that up,” Hoiles said.

“They’ll have to be approaching this one completely different because they don’t have the momentum and they’re coming off a stinging loss but there’s enough guys there with experience who can help them this week

“You know that if Beale’s having a good game it makes other players feel that they have to rise to his level so their big players really need to stand up.”
