Thanos Is The Greatest Villain In New Infinity War Featurette

Marvel Studios releases a new Avengers: Infinity War video featuring all things Thanos. With all of the MCU's successes over its 10-year history, several of their films are plagued with similar problems, one of which is the introduction of underdeveloped and forgettable antagonists. So it was a bold move for the company to build its biggest project around a villain. Luckily for them, for the most part, their risk paid off. Between the impressive VFX work on Josh Brolin and the unique motivation for the character, Thanos has quickly become a pop culture icon.

Teased as early as 2011's Thor, Thanos' first on-screen debut was in 2012's The Avengers' post-credits scene. At that point, only loyal comic book readers were the ones who had an idea who he was. But over the years, Marvel Studios continued to slowly introduce him via a series of brief appearances in their other film installments, and soon it became clear that he's someone being built up as the main big bad of the overall narrative that the franchise has been treading since 2008's Iron Man.

A brand new Infinity War featurette is released online focusing on the Mad Titan in celebration of the film's Blu-ray arrival. Posted on Marvel Entertainment's official YouTube, the clip includes commentaries from Marvel Studios' co-president Louis D'Esposito, Marvel stars Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Hemsworth, as well as directors Joe and Anthony Russo. Dissecting how Thanos is the most dangerous foe that the Earth's Mightiest Heroes have faced so far, the clip also retraces the villain's first attempt to take over the Earth in The Avengers. Watch the full video above.

While Thanos' plan to wipe out half of life in the universe to "balance it" doesn't really make much sense when one truly thinks about it, what separates Thanos from the generic superhero movie villain is that he actually had a purpose different than just wanting to amass more power, and he was relentless in making sure that he fulfilled that goal. Looking at the situation at that angle, it was somehow fitting that he succeeded in executing his plan, especially in contrast with the Avengers, who were not only scattered, but didn't have a reliable scheme to take down the greatest villain that they've encountered.

To be fair, Earth's Mightiest Heroes were playing catch-up with the Mad Titan the whole movie. They were all caught off guard with his arrival (by design) and not knowing much about him and what his endgame was made it difficult for the heroes to come up with a solid plan to defeat the villain. Nonetheless, it still makes sense that someone who has a carefully laid out ploy will defeat them if they continue to operate separately from each other. In hindsight, this is a good lesson in terms of bettering their team dynamics.

That said, it's safe to say Thanos' victory won't be for too long as Earth's Mightiest Heroes are expected to come back with a more solid plan to defeat him in next year's Avengers 4. Aside from the handful of remaining supporting characters who didn't turn to dust at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, the original six MCU heroes will also get help from Ant-Man and Brie Larson's soon-to-debut superhero character, Captain Marvel. Not much is known with regard to specific plot details of the Phase 3 capper, but both time travel and the Quantum Realm are popularly theorized to play a significant part in the film.
