Ant-Man & The Wasp Director Won't Rule Out Avengers 4 Time Travel Theory

Ant-Man and the Wasp director Peyton Reed won't rule out the possibility of time travel in Anthony and Joe Russo's Avengers 4. Last year, a batch of photos from the set of Avengers 4 seemed to indicate that the film would be returning to the Battle of New York from Joss Whedon's first Avengers movie. It was unclear exactly what was happening in the photos as well as what will draw the superhero team back to the momentous battle, but it was certainly clear that time travel was somehow involved.

In the first Ant-Man movie, Michael Douglas' Hank Pym explains to Paul Rudd's Scott Lang that the Quantum Realm is a reality in which all concepts of time and space are nonexistent, that's why it's easy to get lost in there. Then, in Ant-Man and the Wasp's post-credit scene, Michelle Pfeiffer's Janet van Dyne further warns Lang not to get stuck in a time vortex. Unfortunately, since he doesn't have the same Pym Particle disc that he did in the movie, Lang is stuck in the Quantum Realm - and going through time and space seems like an inevitability. At least, that's what fans believe will happen in Avengers 4.

In an interview with Huffington Post, Peyton Reed indicated that time travel is a possibility in Avengers 4, saying, "Based on the science that we’ve set up in the first movie and this one, I won’t rule out the possibility, because, again, we are dealing with a time vortex. That could happen." While Reed's comments are far from confirmation that time travel will be used in the movie, it's enough to at least lend some level of credence to the popular theory. Plus, he doesn't refute the fact that it's technically possible in the Marvel Cinematic Universe now due to everything that happened in both Ant-Man as well as Ant-Man and the Wasp.

At this point, following the events of the Russos' Avengers: Infinity War, there are a plethora of fan theories trying to explain how the first saga of the MCU will end. Things can get quite messy whenever time travel is involved - and to potentially incorporate such a device in an already massive and packed film won't be easy, but the film's screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely seem to have nailed down their ultimate plan for how Thanos' war with the Avengers will eventually end.

Of course, the time travel aspect isn't the only thing that the filmmakers will have to explain or make sense of in Avengers 4. There is also Hulk's weird story arc that needs some answering as well as how the world is coping with the loss of half its population, not to mention how Brie Larson's Carol Danvers figures into everything, especially since the Captain Marvel solo movie takes place in the 1990s. But it looks like fans will just have to wait and see what happens when Avengers 4 hits theaters next summer.
