Hey now, rockstars!

Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan and Smash Mouth have emerged as unlikely foes, after feuding over the soundtrack to Shrek.

Upon release in 2001, the soundtrack to the seminal Dreamworks animation soon became renowned for including the music of Smash Mouth.

As well as featuring the band’s ‘All Star’ in the film’s iconic opening sequence, their cover of The Monkees ‘I’m A Believer’ played an integral part in one of the film’s final scenes

But Corgan recently recently courted controversy during an Instagram Q&A by claiming that Smashing Pumpkins were first asked to provide the song that would soundtrack Shrek’s final scene.

According to the singer, he turned down an offer for their 2000 track ‘Untitled’ to play during the scene that would eventually feature Smash Mouth’s cover of The Monkees.

However, Corgan’s side of the story is very different to that of Smash Mouth – who claim that Dreamworks repeatedly asked them to record the track before they eventually accepted the offer.

Hitting out at Corgan’s “ego”, they wrote: “Actually we said no and Michael Austin from Dreamworks kept calling. That went on for over a month.

“We assume multiple bands we’re asked. If it feeds Billy’s ego to think they we’re first let him think that. Def would have been a darker approach.”

Corgan is yet to respond to the latest claim.

Meanwhile,Billy Corgan has revealed which ’90s band he thinks were the greatest.

Speaking to Alternative Nation, The Smashing Pumpkins frontman answered the question with apparently little deliberation: “Nirvana”.

The Smashing Pumpkins recently played a mammoth 30th anniversary show with Courtney Love, Peter Hook, Deftones’ Chino Moreno and others.
