Natalie Portman Took Thor: Love & Thunder Role To Impress Her Kids Thor: Love and Thunder star Natalie Portman says the reason she took the role in the film was that she wanted to impress her kids. The film, which is opening in theaters on July 8, is the second Thor film to be helmed by Oscar-winning writer and director Taika Waititi. The film will follow up with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) after the events of Avengers: Endgame during a period where he is experiencing something of a midlife crisis and isn't sure if he wants to continue being a superhero. However, when Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), decides to eliminate all gods, he must forge an unbeatable team with Korg (Waititi), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and his former flame Jane Foster (Portman), who now wields the hammer Mjolnir and has taken on the mantle of The Mighty Thor. The film will mark the first time that Portman has returned to the MCU for anything other than a voice role since 2013. She originated the role of Jane Foster in 2011 in the origin story Thor, the fourth entry in the MCU (which has now run for nearly 30 films and counting). Foster is an astrophysicist whose studies lead her to encounter Thor after he has been banished from Asgard, and she eventually grows to love him. Although she returned for that film's sequel, Thor: The Dark World, Foster has been conspicuously absent from the Avengers crossover films, unlike other Avenger love interests Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Agent Carter (Hayley Atwell). Recently, Variety sat down with Portman to discuss her tenure in the MCU. She revealed that the real reason she agreed to return to the Thor franchise after nearly a decade is that she wanted to impress her kids. She has had two children with her husband Benjamin Millepied, who are now aged 5 and 10. She says that they were "enthralled by this process" and that they would beg her to go to work when it's "Usually... quite the opposite." The Black Phone Review: A Thrilling But Convoluted Serial Killer Story The Black Phone is a chilling horror-thriller with a downright creepy performance from Ethan Hawke that (outside a few unique pieces) tells a relatively familiar serial killer story. It's a well-constructed film at nearly every level, with great showings from its kid actors and adult stars alike, atmospheric cinematography, and satisfying jump scares; yet, it falls short in exploring its most intriguing components, notably the titular "black phone" and creepy antagonist "The Grabber" — two aspects that could have differentiated the movie from similar "kid trapped in a killer's basement" movie tropes. Based on the short story of the same name by writer Joe Hill (son of Stephen King), The Black Phone follows teenage brother and sister, Finney (Mason Thames) and Gwen Shaw (Madeleine McGraw), whose Northwest Denver suburb is tormented by a series of child abductions perpetrated by an unknown serial killer known as The Grabber. Bullied at school and terrorized by his alcoholic father, Finney learns to accept abuse (and physical beatings) as inevitable, even failing to defend his sister when she is assailed by their dad for claiming to experience clairvoyant visions. However, when Finney is taken by The Grabber, he discovers a supernatural connection to the killer's previous victims, one that could provide clues to assist in his escape or could just accelerate the danger he's in. Directed by modern horror maestro Scott Derrickson, who previously horrified audiences with The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister (not to mention Doctor Strange), The Black Phone benefits from Derrickson's experience and artistic flourishes, which elevate the movie above standard horror fare. Nevertheless, the setup is stronger in premise than it is in final execution and the filmmaker struggles to expand Hill's short story source material into a full-length movie (even less so a franchise-starter on the level of Sinister). Derrickson supplies entertaining scares, nerve-racking set pieces, and satisfying payoff, but also leaves a lot on the table, failing to develop either The Grabber or The Black Phone's supernatural aspects into anything beyond plot beats that push Finney's journey forward. It's unfortunate, as those aspects and the implied (but barely mentioned) relationship between the two are the movie's most engaging contributions. Derrickson injects subtle clues that outline The Grabber's psychosis and ritualistic patterns, but the director intentionally avoids defining his antagonist with a notable backstory or clear-cut motivations — instead portraying the killer as a truly unhinged, deceptive, and menacing lunatic. Still, in spite of the mask, he's not an emotionless hunter (more Dark Knight Joker than Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers) and Hawke relishes in the role, delivering a disturbing and spirited portrayal that keeps Finney, and by extension the audience, unnerved and unsure of what may happen throughout the events of The Black Phone. Relative newcomer Thames (For All Mankind) is solid for his part. Exchanges between Finney and The Grabber are brief — mostly scene stealing weirdness from Hawke — so The Black Phone doesn't supply Thames with particularly rich interactions to showcase his own talents. It's a confusing choice, especially considering that one stage of The Grabber's criminal pattern involves befriending and admiring his victims, a setup that would provide ample room for Hawke and Thames to share scenes and unpack what The Grabber is trying to accomplish, as well as what makes Finney different from the killer's prior abductees. Derrickson provides an in-canon explanation for why many of the pair's encounters are cut short, but it's an underwhelming one. Still, Finney's kid hero path from school punching bag to survivalist is satisfying to follow even if it will leave some viewers wanting more from his confrontations with The Grabber. That said, while Thames is the primary protagonist, with few meaty interactions between Finney and The Grabber, he's often upstaged by his on-screen sister, who spars with bullies, cops, and her own father in an effort to find her brother. Gwen is the most vivid character in the movie and a noticeable favorite of Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill, providing the younger Shaw sibling with many of The Black Phone's biggest laughs, gripping scenes of emotional drama, and even some genuinely kick-ass moments. Considering the caliber of Derrickson and Cargill's prior collaborations, audiences should be aware that, even though The Black Phone has more than enough creepy moments (and a surprising amount of jump scares) to satisfy scary movie fans, it's more true-crime thriller with a supernatural through-line than an unrelenting horror ride. And nothing in the film compares to the inventive (and petrifying) set pieces that made Derrickson's prior works (Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, especially) iconic. The Grabber is creepy and Hawke pulls out all the stops but it's unlikely that his killer will ever join Hollywood's iconic horror villain pantheon (or even become a best-selling costume at Spirit Halloween). Black Phone is the rare scary movie that could have benefited from additional runtime and exploration of its numerous ideas, especially the film's supernatural components. Instead, despite quality parts (especially performances from Hawke, Thames, and McGraw as well as the movie's eerie 1978 setting and atmosphere), Derrickson struggles to build upon Hill's short story in enough significant ways to make the movie version any richer or more terrifying than its 30-page source material. The result is a beautifully shot and well-acted live-action short story, but one that's missing enough connective tissue, fresh ideas, and time spent between its characters to produce a lasting feature film experience. The Black Phone releases in theaters June 24. The film is 102 minutes long and is rated R for violence, bloody images, language and some drug use.

New MCU Disney+ Show Could Be A Hollywood Satire, Says Report The new MCU show Wonder Man, which is in the early development stages at Disney+, is reportedly going to be a Hollywood satire. Since the beginning of Phase 4, the MCU has gotten a secondary platform through Disney+. Thanks to the Disney-branded streaming service, Marvel Studios has been able to flesh out the MCU as they continue to go through Phase 4. Following the end of the Infinity Saga, Phase 4 has been introducing new heroes and villains to the Avengers-focused universe, both on the big screen and on Disney+ While Disney+ has already seen several new Marvel Studios originals arrive in the last few years, another one is on its way. Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community scribe Andrew Guest are teaming up with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton to develop a Wonder Man series for Disney+ The series is currently in early development with Guest as the head writer while Cretton is expected to direct at least 1 episode. Due to it having been recently announced, the Wonder Man show is likely not looking to start production until 2023. Since the initial announcement, Marvel Studios and Disney+ have yet to comment on the Wonder Man adaptation. However, new details have emerged about the MCU drama, as Variety writer Joe Otterson is reporting that he has heard that Wonder Man may actually be a Hollywood satire. Otterson stresses that while it is not 100% confirmed, it would make sense for Wonder Man to go in that direction due to the character's background. If Wonder Man goes forward as a Disney+ series, it would follow Simon Williams as the titular character, who was an actor and stuntman prior to becoming a superhero. Wonder Man, who debuted in the Marvel Universe in August 1964, was initially a villain before becoming a hero. In the comics, Wonder Man was a prominent member of the West Coast Avengers, one of the many alternative Avengers teams in the Marvel Universe. So far, Wonder Man has only appeared in a handful of animated shows, including The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The idea to have Wonder Man be approached as a Hollywood satire would be a new and refreshing direction for the MCU. Given how the Avengers have changed celebrity culture within the MCU, it would be intriguing to see how the show would tackle that through Simon's eyes. It would help Wonder Man stand out from the other MCU shows, especially as Simon isn't as recognizable in comparison to other Marvel heroes in the franchise. While unconfirmed, it wouldn't be shocking if Wonder Man doesn't premiere until Phase 5, given how Phase 4 is already packed. Time will tell what Marvel Studios is doing with Wonder Man, but hopefully, details will emerge sooner rather than later.

The Mouse House has long been synonymous with the animated movie industry, and even as IP franchises, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Star Wars become bigger focuses, Disney is still a significant player in Hollywood's animated movie space. Pixar's Lightyear is the latest effort from Disney's various animated studios and an attempt to reinvent the Toy Story franchise with Chris Evans voicing Buzz Lightyear. Debuting in theaters in 2022, Lightyear marks the first Pixar movie to release exclusively in this format since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Soul, Luca, and Turning Red all had their theatrical release plans scrapped in favor of exclusive releases on Disney+. With the backing of the Toy Story franchise, Lightyear was given the wide theatrical release the previous original stories were not. The end result will be another big hit for Disney and Pixar, as Lightyear's positive reviews, high box office projections, and sequel setup signal that this is the start of a new Pixar animated franchise. Lightyear marks the fourth major Disney animated movie of 2022 to come from one of its three animation studios. Pixar's Turning Red kicked off the year, while Disney Animation Studios was then involved in the CGI/live-action hybrid Chip 'N Dale: Rescue Rangers reboot. 20th Century Animation also released The Bob's Burgers Movie in theaters only a few weeks before Lightyear. As evident by the title, Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again is about Hank Azaria's Kahmunrah returning for revenge. Franchise veterans like Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan, and Rami Malek will voice their characters in the Night at the Museum reboot as well. Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules - 2022 Disney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid animated movie franchise is going to continue after Lightyear. No official release date has been given, but Kinney has plans to turn all of his Diary of a Wimpy Kid books into animated movies as long as the films continue to succeed. Untitled Carlos López Estrada Movie - 2023 Raya and the Last Dragon's co-director Carlos López Estrada is confirmed to be working on another animated movie for Disney. Plot details are not yet confirmed for Estrada's new story, but Walt Disney Animation Studios previously confirmed the untitled film will debut sometime in 2023. Following the very positive reviews for Raya and the Last Dragon, there is reason to be excited about what Carlos López Estrada will do next, even if hardly anything is known about it.

Indiana Jones 5's Deaging Betrays Steven Spielberg's Original Vision With it looking likely that Indiana Jones 5 will employ de-aging technology on Harrison Ford, the sequel looks set to betray the vision of co-creator Steven Spielberg. Many years in the making, Indiana Jones 5 will of course be the first entry into the storied adventure saga to not have Spielberg in the director's chair. Instead, director James Mangold is steering the ship. Spielberg never really went into much detail on his decision to step down, outside of saying he wanted to see what a new director could do with the franchise. Still, Spielberg remains onboard Indiana Jones 5 as a producer, and like fellow Indiana Jones co-creator/producer George Lucas, it's hard to imagine his influence not being felt on set. Yet, the best producers do have to know when to trust the judgment of the director they hired, as having too many cooks in the creative kitchen can lead to a final dish that has an inconsistent flavor at best or a disastrous one at worst. After the highly divisive nature of 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, that's something everyone involved surely hopes to avoid. While it hasn't been officially confirmed that Indiana Jones 5 employs CGI de-aging to present a younger version of Harrison Ford's Indy, several set photos have heavily implied it. Stunt doubles have been seen wearing masks of a young Ford's face, as well as Ford himself sporting what looks like motion capture markers on his face, a technique used to assist CGI artists. It's unclear how exactly a de-aged Indy will be used in the sequel (there have been rumors it will deal with time travel), but Indiana Jones 5 using de-aging at all runs entirely counter to Spielberg's stated original vision for the film. In 2012, Spielberg that "I would never do an Indy retread where I took Indiana's face, the way it exists in 2011 and 'youngify' him. I would never do that." (via New York Daily News) Yet, that's exactly what a Mangold-directed Indiana Jones 5 appears to be doing. Considering that iconic Indiana Jones actor Harrison Ford is in his late 70s, it is understandable that director James Mangold and studio Disney might want to use de-aging tech in order to present a more youthful take on the character. After all, many felt Ford looked too old to be a believable action hero in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and that was released 14 years ago at this point. Still, Spielberg's previous comments make him sound dead set against the idea of pretending Ford is younger than he is. In that same interview, Spielberg also added "Harrison has to be the age that he is when we make the picture. He's going to have to play that age, and we'll write that into the script." As far as that last part goes, it's unclear at present if Indiana Jones 5's still mysterious story does indeed take into account Ford's current age when it comes to how it characterizes Indy. After all, it's possible the de-aged Ford will only be used for one or a handful of flashback sequences, with Ford's natural appearance used for the majority of the sequel's story. Keeping the use of de-aging in Indiana Jones 5 to a minimum would certainly be more in line with Spielberg's previous pledge to avoid altering Dr. Jones' age, but doing it at all still represents a clear shift away from Spielberg's vision after Mangold took the reins. Picard Season 3: Jonathan Frakes’ Return Can Fix Enterprise’s Finale With an ideally bigger return coming up for Jonathan Frakes in Star Trek: Picard, the franchise finally has an opportunity to fix the problems with Enterprise's finale, namely due to William T. Riker's involvement. The final episode of Star Trek: Enterprise takes a unique route by concluding every character's story through the narrative perspective of a holoprogram run by Riker. Issues that arose from this non-linear plot haven't been addressed in Star Trek since the end of Enterprise's run, so now may be the only opportunity to redeem the show's reputation. In order to solve a personal dilemma about the confidential USS Pegasus, First Officer William T. Riker begins a holoprogram in Star Trek: Enterprise's finale that will allow him to interact with the NX-class Enterprise crew's final mission preceding the initiation of the United Federation of Planets. Through Riker's simulation, the audience watches the crew's resolutions unfold. In a time jump from the second to last episode, T'pol and Trip have separated, Shran has conceived a child with Jhamel, and Captain Archer is chosen to construct the Federation's commencement speech. The recorded final mission of Archer's Enterprise ultimately inspires Riker to open up to Captain Picard about the Pegasus. Jonathan Frakes has appeared in the recent Star Trek installment, Picard, and is slated to return with nearly the entire main cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation for season 3. As recently as Strange New Worlds, Enterprise has been remembered either in tribute or with references but the critically panned finale has not yet been addressed. Though Enterprise faced many problems with reception, its finale, in particular, resulted in an outcry of disappointment. Watching the resolutions of Enterprise's characters through the perspective of Riker, a character uninvolved in their story, for the series finale is disingenuous to the characters and implies the ending the audience sees may not be completely accurate. After all, the holodeck cannot replicate history seamlessly. Focusing on Riker also causes emotional moments like Trip's death to feel rushed as well as dismissive. Since Jonathan Frakes is returning for Star Trek: Picard season 3, he may have enough screen time to finally expand the lore of Enterprise in a way that redeems its vacant finale. A scene where he mentions the characters of Enterprise and confirms he isn't the appropriate person to tell that crew's story might take away from The Next Generation focus the last episode has. Even a throwaway line about holo-simulations and how inaccurate they can be would fix Enterprise's finale from feeling duplicitous. To further fix the problems the Enterprise finale poses, Picard season 3 could have a cameo from an Enterprise crew member to either correct Riker's record of their crew's final mission or at least offer more of a conclusive ending for those characters. The timeline causes a dilemma since the NX-class crew would be long dead by the time period of Picard, however, Scotty from Star Trek: The Original Series appears in TNG due to an anomaly which is a plot device that can easily be replicated. This may be the last time Jonathan Frakes appears in Star Trek so the franchise should use this opportunity to redefine the ending of Enterprise in a decisive manner considering Riker's major involvement in why it comes across as convoluted. Enterprise is an underrated installment in the franchise because of its lost potential, a crew of distinctive characters, and foundational concept. The finale crushed an opportunity to solidify its powerful legacy, making a final shot at redemption needed. Star Trek: Picard season 3 finally has a chance to fix Enterprise's finale issues by having either Jonathan Frakes' Riker or a returning character clarify the reality of the show's conclusion.
