  1. M. Night Shyamalan's next movie is Knock at the Cabin, the details of which are beginning to arrive as far as its cast, story, and release date are concerned. The apocalyptic horror is written, directed, and produced by the prolific filmmaker, best known for The Sixth Sense and the "Eastrail 177 trilogy" (Unbreakable, Split, and Glass). Knock at the Cabin is the second movie made as part of Shyamalan's two-film contract with Universal Studios, the first of which was the 2021 thriller Old. Knock at the Cabin is officially an adaptation of the 2018 novel The Cabin at the End of the World by bestselling horror author Paul Tremblay. In July 2022, Tremblay finally confirmed that his book was the source material for Shyamalan's movie after spending months "quelling internet rumors and putting out Twitter fires connecting the book and movie" (via CNBC). This will be the first of Tremblay's works to be adapted. Audiences aren't sure what to expect from Knock at the Cabin, especially since Shyamalan is famous for his twist endings— some of them more successfully realized than others. But, now that filming has officially wrapped on the production, anticipation is at an all-time high. Here's everything that's known about Knock at the Cabin so far. Knock At The Cabin Story: What Is Shyamalan's Next Movie About? Knock at the Cabin is described as a home invasion horror that takes place during the apocalypse. Tremblay's novel, The Cabin at the End of the World, may provide more plot clues. The book follows Wen, a seven-year-old girl vacationing in a remote cabin with her parents, Eric and Andrew. Four strangers, Leonard, Redmond, Adriane, and Sabrina, arrive at the cabin and force the family into a deadly encounter. Tremblay has already told fans that the film won't be exactly the same as the book, and anyone familiar with Shyamalan's movie's unorthodox storytelling should probably expect a few wild plot twists. Knock At The Cabin Cast Dave Bautista stars in Knock at the Cabin as Leonard, and the rest of his crew will be played by Rupert Grint as Redmond, Nikki Amuka-Bird as Adriane, and Abby Quinn as Sabrina. Hamilton's Jonathan Groff and Fleabag's Ben Aldridge will be playing the married couple, Andrew and Eric. No young actor has been announced for the role of Wen, suggesting that Shyamalan might have completely removed this character. Amuka-Bird previously worked with Shyamalan on Old, and this also won't be Grint's first time working with Shyamalan. The filmmaker produces the TV series Servant, in which Grint has a main role. Knock at the Cabin will be the first feature role in eight years for Rupert Grint, who isn't in many movies. Knock At The Cabin Release Date Knock at the Cabin is now in post-production, but there's still a while to wait before the film reaches the big screen. It was originally scheduled for a later release, but the date was pushed up by two weeks; perhaps to better fit the schedule of other 2023 horror releases, including a new Stephen King adaptation and a spinoff of A Quiet Place. Knock at the Cabin is now set to be released on February 3, 2023.
  2. Neo's death at the end of The Matrix: Revolutions was the prophetic conclusion of his journey as the messianic savior of Zion. Neo is "The One," a godlike being who possesses the power to manipulate the Matrix at will. The Matrix: Revolutions' ending left some speculation about whether Neo was actually dead, but the fate of his predecessors and resurrection in the following film confirmed his death. The third installment of The Matrix franchise was released in November 2003, only a few months after The Matrix: Reloaded. Revolutions was originally the franchise's final installment until 2022's Matrix: Resurrections. In the third film, Neo was at the height of his powers and engaged in one of the most iconic movie battles with his antithesis, Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith's betrayal of his fellow agents saw him gain powers that rivaled Neo's with their fierce battle ending with the deaths of both men. Neo's death was hinted at throughout the series but confirmed in his meeting with The Architect, the creator of the Matrix. The Architect refers to The One as an anomaly and reveals that Neo is the sixth iteration whose function is to stabilize the Matrix. Unlike his predecessors, Neo's infatuation with one human, Trinity, over all of humanity breaks the cycle of the usual two choices the anomaly is given. The choices are to enter the source door and pick twenty-three humans to repopulate Zion or not enter and kill every human connected to the Matrix. Ultimately, Neo's relationship with Trinity proved his greatest motivator, resulting in the final confrontation with the machines in their city. His truce with the machines is able to save Zion and fulfill his duty as The One to be reintegrated into the Matrix to stabilize it, assuring Neo's death. Therefore, while his journey as The One may have been unorthodox, Neo still fulfilled his ultimate responsibility – a responsibility that inevitably had to culminate in his death. What Neo's Death In The Matrix Revolutions Really Meant The path of The One is really quite philosophical. The role of The One as a prime program is to return to the source under the disguise of making a choice. Despite possessing transcendent powers, the anomaly is a program, and all programs have primary functions. Neo is able to break the cycle by being the first iteration to attach to another human instead of choosing all of humanity. Unlike his predecessors, he was able to will a third option into existence that would save the city of Zion and the Matrix. Neo's sacrifice parallels the sacrifice of Christ. Like Christ, Neo's path as the chosen one dictated that he would have to make a sacrifice for the benefit of humanity. Neo's sacrifice even affects the machines, who start to exhibit some free will, a somewhat foreign concept to them. Neo's death causes a total reboot of the Matrix and ends the cycle leading to the creation of The One. The Matrix: Revolutions centers around destiny and whether it can be changed. The machines thought of Neo's choice as a binary one, a classic either-or scenario. However, the more human side of Neo, which felt true love was able to transcend beyond simple program functions and offer a third choice that could benefit humanity and machines. Neo's death allowed humans to disconnect from the Matrix, ironically giving all of humanity a chance to change their destiny. However, in order for this scenario to materialize, it was still essential that Neo die in the process.

  5. Michael Shannon and Boyd Holbrook join the cast of the upcoming film The Bikeriders. Shannon is a two-time Academy Award-nominated actor (Revolutionary Road, Nocturnal Animals), who has acted in a number of acclaimed films such as Take Shelter, 99 Homes, The Shape of Water, Bullet Train, and Knives Out. Holbrook is known for his roles in action and horror genre films, such as Logan, The Predator (2018), The Host (2013), In the Shadow of the Moon, and for his recent work in the Netflix TV series The Sandman. He will also feature in the fifth Indiana Jones film. Now, Holbrook and Shannon have been cast in The Bikeriders, according to Deadline. Damon Herriman (The Tourist, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood) will also be joining the cast. The Bikeriders is directed by Jeff Nichols. It is inspired by the photography and the 1967 book The Bikeriders by Danny Lyon. The Bikeriders film will be set in the 1960s and follow the happenings and rise of a fictional Midwestern motorcycle club. Over the course of the decade, the club develops and changes, only to have their image and style threatened when the club begins evolving into a more dangerous gang. Holbrook and Shannon join an already star-infused cast for The Bikeriders. Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy, and Elvis star Austin Butler are already set to act in the film. Sarah Green and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones are producing the film. Fred Berger will executive produce.
  6. The Flash star Ezra Miller has officially broken their silence following multiple legal controversies, as they are now seeking treatment. Since 2014, after Miller was cast as Barry Allen in the DCEU, The Flash movie has endured many delays and development periods on its way to becoming a reality. From several directors and screenwriters boarding and departing, it wasn't until It director Andy Muschietti got attached to The Flash that the film went into principal photography before wrapping in late 2021. However, since March 2022, the lead star has been in hot water as Miller has faced multiple legal troubles. It began with a number of arrests in Hawaii before allegations of grooming came up, which was followed by Miller seemingly going on the run as authorities couldn't locate The Flash actor. In the last few weeks, things began to ramp up again as Miller was charged with felony burglary. This made some question whether The Flash would be scrapped entirely. As The Flash has been in the news a lot lately due to Miller's controversies, the 29-year-old star has now broken their silence. In a statement shared to Variety, provided by Miller's representatives, the non-binary actor apologizes for their actions while opening up about having gone through "a time of intense crisis." Check out Miller's full statement below. “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment. I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.” According to the report, Warner Bros. Discovery is supporting Miller's decision to seek professional help. Since Miller's statement was released, there has been no indication of what this means for The Flash movie going forward, as it's still currently set to release on June 23, 2023. Even amid all the legal reports coming out, Miller still completed reshoots for The Flash this summer; there were no plans to replace the actor with a new star due to how expensive it would be. In a recent report, Warner Bros. Discovery was allegedly looking at three options for how to deal with The Flash star's situation. One of them was to have Miller make a statement and seek professional help, which is the situation that is now happening. Even if the DCEU product goes forward and comes out next summer, there is no clarity yet if the studio is looking to continue working with Miller as the Flash in future DC movies. With Miller having shared this statement, it does seem to cancel out the idea of The Flash movie being scrapped altogether, which was one of the alternatives if the reports are true. While Miller has offered a public apology, it remains to be seen if the charges against The Flash actor will go anywhere.
  7. After plenty of teases for its development, Saw 10 has officially been confirmed and set for a Halloween 2023 release date with a previous franchise director at the helm. Following the financially successful 2017 revival, Jigsaw, the Saw franchise continued with last year's Spiral: From the Book of Saw, a spinoff starring Chris Rock and based on a story idea from the star. Despite more mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, the film was a modest box office success, grossing over $40 million against its $20 million production budget. Even prior to Spiral's modest success, a Saw 10 film was confirmed to be in development at Twisted Pictures, with franchise director Darren Lynn Bousman noting it to have been premature and keeping mum on whether it would continue the story of Rock's film or the mainline series. Josh Stolberg, who penned the scripts for both Jigsaw and Spiral, has offered behind-the-scenes teases of the sequel's development over the past year, teasing that it was his favorite film in the franchise that he's written yet and teasing that fans of Tobin Bell's Jigsaw would be very pleased. Some five months after Stolberg's last update, audiences are finally getting new word on Saw 10. The Wrap has brought word that Lionsgate is officially moving forward with Saw 10 alongside franchise producers Twisted Pictures. Kevin Greutert, who helmed the sixth and seventh installments in the franchise, is back to direct the new sequel on a script from series vet Josh Stolberg. Lionsgate has also set Saw 10 for an October 27, 2023 release date, just in time for the Halloween season. In addition to the release date and director announcement, producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules teased that Saw 10 will include what "fans have been asking for" and that they are working with the creative team to plan a movie for franchise fans and genre lovers alike. The duo's promise seems largely in line with Stolberg's previous tease in December that Tobin Bell's Jigsaw could make his way back to the fold for the franchise, a character many have been eager to see return, even if it further convolutes the timeline of the series. With the sequel now confirmed to be moving forward, it will be interesting for fans of the franchise to see whether the 80-year-old face of the movies will be back. Kevin Greutert's return to the director's chair for Saw 10 may come as welcome news to fans of the franchise and critics alike, given his first outing, Saw VI, still sits as the second-best-received chapter behind James Wan's original film. That being said, given the director was behind the worst-received installment in the series, Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, some may find themselves hoping that Stolberg's script combined with Greutert's direction could lead to one of the best yet. Only time will tell when Saw 10 hits theaters on October 27, 2023.
  8. Dwayne Johnson teases the extent of Black Adam’s brutality as he prepares to make his debut in the DC Extended Universe. The titular villain-turned-antihero’s debut is almost a decade in the making, with 2018’s Shazam! putting the hero's nemesis on the backburner for a few years. Black Adam is set to reunite Jungle Cruise filmmaker Jaume Collet-Sera, who is directing the project, with Johnson serving as producer. Once a slave from Kahndaq, Black Adam will follow the merciless killer as he re-enters society after being jailed for over 5,000 years. Though he previously abused his powers granted to him by Shazam, Black Adam is now on the Justice Society of America's radar, as they attempt to reform his abilities for the betterment of society. The JSA will star Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate. Now, Johnson is opening up about Black Adam's unforgiving and brutal nature, clearly in stark contrast to the typical DC hero. During an interview with Variety, Johnson teases just how far Black Adam will go in achieving his goals. Johnson reveals that Black Adam refuses to hold back, even at the price of causing a gory scene. Although he may be helping the greater good, he will stop at nothing, even if it means killing someone. Check out Johnson's full explanation of Black Adam's temperament below: “Superman won’t kill anybody. There’s a code that he lives by and he honors,” Johnson says. “Black Adam has a unique code of ethics too. He will not hesitate—and I like to have a little fun when I’m explaining this—to rip somebody in half.” Does that mean the actor is…kidding? “Literally, he’ll grab someone by the neck and by the thigh and then rip them up, tear them apart,” Johnson clarifies. While it's unclear whether his powers will ultimately be used for good, the film's trailers point to a more reformed, tamed Black Adam, yet still merciless towards his victims. Previously, Johnson has hinted the origin story presented in Black Adam will justify the anti-hero's actions, highlighting the loss of his family in drastically changing his mindset. Understanding that he will do anything in his power to protect his family, including ripping someone in half, suggests that throughout the film his character arc will turn him away from the dark side. If this is just how brutal Black Adam can be, then the JSA has a lot of work ahead of them with reigning him in. The highly-anticipated JSA will see each character possessing their own set of powers, which will hopefully be enough to tame Black Adam in defeating the evil in Sabaac. As excitement builds for Black Adam, it's clear that the antihero's debut will majorly shake up the DCEU, as he is preparing to be a force to be reckoned with.
  9. Love, Death & Robots season 4 has officially been ordered by Netflix. The animated anthology series aired its first season in 2019 and quickly rose to critical acclaim, currently boasting an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 12 Emmy Awards to date. Focusing on a wide range of genres including comedy, horror, sci-fi, and fantasy, each episode of the series features a standalone story centering on one or more of the titular main themes: love, death, or robots. Now, the official Netflixgeeked account has confirmed that season 4 of Love, Death & Robots is on the way. In a colorful flickering video, the announcement was made in a style typical of the series with the censored message, “Volume F***!” Leaving no doubt about the show’s future in the captions, Netflix confirmed: “Love, Death + Robots Volume IV is a GO.” Check out the official post below: https://www.instagram.com/p/ChKa5wpjitw/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=embed_video_watch_again Consistently praised for its ingenuity and the creativity behind its different animation styles, the show was widely expected to receive an order for a fourth season, particularly following the award-winning success of director Alberto Mielgo’s season 3 episode, “Jibaro.” Love, Death & Robots is executive produced by Tim Miller (Deadpool, Terminator: Dark Fate), David Fincher (Mindhunter, Fight Club), Jennifer Miller and Joshua Donen (House of Cards), with Jennifer Yuh Nelson (The Darkest Minds) serving as a supervising director.

  12. Highlander director Chad Stahleski gives an update on the long-promised remake of the cult film starring Henry Cavill. The original 1986 Highlander told the epic tale of an age-old battle between immortal warriors, following Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), an immortal born in the 16th-century Scottish Highlands, in both the past and present. Highlander became a cult classic and spawned a franchise that includes two direct film sequels, Highlander II and III, and a spinoff that followed a new Highlander named Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul). Although none of Highlander's sequels could live up to the original, the franchise is still pervasive in pop culture with its famous tagline, "There can only be one." Ever since the last live-action Highlander film, Highlander: The Source, delivered yet another disappointing sequel, there has been some interest in reviving the franchise. Lionsgate eventually acquired the rights and chose John Wick director Stahleski (after a long line of others) to helm the project. Things seemed to be progressing well for Stahleski's Highlander, but as several years passed, the remake seemed stuck in development. Then in 2021, it was announced that The Witcher actor Henry Cavill would star in the Highlander remake as Connor MacLeod. Since that announcement, news about the Highlander reboot has been sparse, but now there is finally an update. In a recent interview with Collider, Stahleski shared a short but positive glimpse at Highlander's current development stage. Fans of the cult film will be happy to hear that the Highlander remake is "closer than we've ever been." Check out Stahleski's full statement below: Stahleski may not give away many details about the new Highlander's direction with this update, but he has previously shared some of his plans for the remake. After Cavill was announced as MacLeod, the Highlander director explained how Cavill's range as an actor would help to explore Connor's burden as an immortal more deeply. Of course, Cavill's previous experience swinging a sword on The Witcher would also contribute to the epic action sequences essential to Highlander. Still, with many other projects on his schedule, Cavill's continuing involvement with Highlander has yet to be confirmed, so Stahleski's plan could change. While this most recent update by Stahleski doesn't give much information, it does confirm the most important detail: the Highlander remake is still happening. Although the wait on this remake may seem to be taking forever to fans of the original cult film, they can rest assured that the project hasn't been dropped. If Stahleski can realize his vision for the Highlander remake, combining the slick, energetic action shots he's known for and Cavill's range, then the Highlander remake will be worth the wait. For now, Highlander fans will need to wait patiently for the next update.
  13. HBO Max's upcoming Green Lantern TV show has seemingly gotten its release date window revealed, as it is still coming from Warner Bros. TV. One of the most highly anticipated DC TV shows that are in the works is the Green Lantern live-action series, set to premiere on HBO Max. Developed by Arrowverse executive producer Greg Berlanti, the show was first put into development back in October 2019, which would become the most expensive DC TV series that he has ever created for Warner Bros. TV. Green Lantern received a series pick-up in 2020 for 10 episodes, with Seth Grahame-Smith set as the showrunner. Rather than focus on just one Emerald Knight, Green Lantern will be an ensemble series that revolves around multiple iconic members of the Green Lantern Corps. The cast of characters will include Guy Gardner, Alan Scott, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Sinestro, Kilowog, and also an original character named Bree Jarta. Despite having Guy and Alan cast, with Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine respectively, there has been speculation, including from filmmaker Kevin Smith, that Green Lantern has been canceled, due to the lack of news and progression on the project. However, HBO Max's Green Lantern TV show is moving forward, and thanks to the Entertainment Identifier Registry (via @SIM0nJess,) the window release date has been revealed. The EIDR information reveals that the HBO Max drama is targeting a 2024 premiere. EIDR is what many media companies are using in order to keep up with their content that gets released on various platforms. Check out the following information below. It's understandable that many are wondering if Green Lantern is moving forward. It was just last week that Warner Bros. Discovery announced, despite production having finished in March, that the Batgirl movie was scrapped, which was a massive surprise that sent shockwaves through Hollywood. It was also revealed by Smith himself that the HBO Max series, Strange Adventures, has also been canceled. However, given the ambitious efforts that are going into Green Lantern, it's slightly understandable why things are maybe taking so long for the series to get up and running. It's also worth remembering that despite the many changes happening with Warner Bros. Discovery, the global COVID-19 pandemic is still factoring into productions in general right now. Something that has also assured that Green Lantern season 1 is in the making stages is that writer Marc Guggenheim revealed in June that episode 10, a.k.a. the season 1 finale was being written. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Alan Scott actor Irvine, while promoting Benediction, confirmed that no start for filming had been set yet. Given the 2024 window, it wouldn't be shocking at this point if Green Lantern goes into filming its first season in Q2 of 2023.

  15. Top Gun: Maverick is likely to become the seventh biggest film ever at the domestic box office, a record currently held by Titanic. Top Gun: Maverick premiered this May and has been screening in theaters ever since. It's the sequel to the original Top Gun (1986), also starring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, with Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, and Glen Powell joining them in Top Gun: Maverick cast. The movie follows Maverick (Cruise) as he trains a group of TOPGUN Navy fighter pilots. Top Gun: Maverick has been doing extremely well at the box office, breaking many records. On June 17, Top Gun: Maverick became Cruise's highest-grossing movie of his entire career, and on June 26, the movie officially crossed the $1 billion mark for combined domestic and international box office numbers. Many fans and critics have praised the movie for being even better than the original, while some have critiqued it for being nothing more than tired, cookie-cutter U.S. military propaganda. Regardless, its massive box office numbers speak to just how popular this movie has been and continues to be. Now, Variety writes that Top Gun: Maverick is set to break another record: the domestic box office's seventh biggest movie ever. As of today, Top Gun: Maverick has grossed over $657 million, while Titanic has grossed over $659 million. And as Top Gun: Maverick is currently in theaters while Titanic is not, the $2 million gap between the two movies is almost certain to close soon. Of the top ten movies on the All-Time Domestic Box Office list, Titanic is the only one left that was not released in the 21st century. It's also one of the few on the list not released as a sequel or part of a larger universe like the MCU. As many movie lovers have expressed frustration that few truly original movies are being greenlit by Hollywood executives, it's interesting to see how movies like Top Gun: Maverick, which are based on existing IP, are doing extremely well numbers-wise, often surpassing their originals. For example, Top Gun: Maverick has far exceeded its original in terms of box office numbers; the original has only grossed $180 million at the domestic box office, only a third of its sequel. Titanic isn't guaranteed to permanently relinquish its spot to Top Gun: Maverick, though. For its 25th anniversary, a remastered version of Titanic will be hitting theaters, likely in early 2023. Depending on how popular that ends up being, there's a chance that Titanic will be able to climb the ranks of the All-Time Domestic Box Office list again. Top Gun: Maverick is slowly losing its box office dominance, as it looks like it may exit the domestic box office's top five movies for the first time ever this week.
  16. A new project starring Tom Cruise has been teased by Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 director Christopher McQuarrie. Dead Reckoning will be the seventh Mission: Impossible film. Cruise will return yet again as action hero Ethan Hunt, starring alongside Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, Rebecca Ferguson, and Hayley Atwell. The film’s stunts are already promised to be better than ever, with Atwell and other actors detailing their intense Mission: Impossible training processes during the film's production. McQuarrie and Cruise have been frequent collaborators throughout their careers. Besides directing Mission: Impossible 7 and its in-production follow-up Mission: Impossible 8, McQuarrie also worked on the two previous installments, 2015's Rogue Nation and 2018's Fallout. His partnership with Cruise extend beyond the world of Mission: Impossible, too; McQuarrie served as a screenwriter for Edge of Tomorrow, The Mummy, and Top Gun: Maverick, and as a director for Jack Reacher. It looks like McQuarrie and Cruise will continue their partnership outside of the Mission: Impossible universe. In a recent interview with Light the Fuse podcast (via The Wrap), McQuarrie reveals that he and Cruise are planning to work on a project that the two have “talked about for a really long time.” According to McQuarrie, this film will be a departure from Cruise’s usual work, but a little more inside of McQuarrie’s own “wheelhouse.” Check out the full statement from McQuarrie below: “It’s kind of under wraps. It has neither a fuse nor a fuselage. Oh that’s not true. It does have some fuselages. It’s something we’ve talked about for a really long time. It’s way outside of what you’re used to seeing Tom do. It’s the kind of stuff I really love. It’s a little bit more in my wheelhouse. And yet it takes everything we’ve learned on this journey, which is making movies more and more about emotion and real emotional experiences. That’s what you’re feeling when you’re watching ‘Top Gun’ – it’s me and Tom squeezing your adrenals for every emotion. Now we’re applying that to something that is gnarlier.” McQuarrie is setting a high bar for himself in regard to this next Cruise project. His final statement alone is a bold claim. If this mysterious film is to apply the “feeling when you’re watching Top Gun” to “something that is gnarlier,” this obscure project could be an absolute film sensation. Top Gun: Maverick was a smashing success at both the box office and with critics, so upping the game on that into a whole new project sounds like an insurmountably difficult task, but one that could be thrilling if pulled off. Another compelling aspect of McQuarrie’s statement lies in the idea of this new project being more inside the writer-director’s wheelhouse. Fans are used to seeing Cruise perform. He’s an action actor notorious for his daredevil stunt performances who breaks out into the occasional drama (e.g. Rain Man, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut). McQuarrie’s career, on the other hand, has been most clearly defined by his projects with Cruise. Thus, McQuarrie’s specific wheelhouse could represent some kind of untapped potential that the world has not seen yet. If the director’s claim regarding the departure from Cruise’s usual work holds any weight, this vague idea of a film could turn into something thrilling for audiences, even if it does not look anything like the collaboration viewers saw with the Mission: Impossible movies.
  17. Recent developments for MCU Phase 6 make it look like Shang-Chi and Captain Marvel may have big roles to play in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Shang-Chi and Captain Marvel will have big roles in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty., Just a few years after the release of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios announced that audiences will get two Avengers movies in 2025. The confirmation of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars give viewers a clear roadmap to where the MCU is heading, as the Multiverse Saga is building toward an epic clash between Kang the Conqueror and a new version of the Avengers. Avengers: Endgame brought an end to Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow's time with the Avengers, so a very different lineup of MCU superheroes will be needed for Avengers 5. Of the original members, Thor, the Hulk, and Hawkeye could still have roles to play in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but the expectation is that newer heroes will receive the spotlight instead. Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Shang-Chi, Spider-Man, Ant-Man, and whoever the MCU's next Black Panther is will likely be part of the Avengers 5 team. The multiverse and Kang-focused story of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty might result in Doctor Strange and Ant-Man playing major roles, but now Shang-Chi and Captain Marvel appear likely to have important roles, too. Destin Daniel Cretton has just been announced as the director of Avengers 5. He previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for Marvel Studios, so his hiring could indicate that Shang-Chi will have a prominent role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Cretton also has a tendency to feature Brie Larson in his movies, as she's starred in two of them, had a supporting role in another, and even cameoed as Captain Marvel in the Shang-Chi post-credits scene. Their ongoing partnership should continue with Avengers 5 now and result in Captain Marvel being another one of the movie's main characters. Shang-Chi’s Post-Credits Already Teased Avengers 5’S Team Marvel Studios has yet to officially confirm any cast members for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but it is worth noting that Destin Daniel Cretton may have already revealed the main team in Shang-Chi's post-credits. The after-credits teaser showed Wong taking Shang-Chi and Katy back to the Sanctum Sanctorum for a conversation with Captain Marvel and Bruce Banner. They gathered to discuss the origins of the Ten Rings weapons. The scene clearly teased Shang-Chi becoming an Avenger in the MCU. It now seems even more likely that Shang-Chi, Captain Marvel, Wong, and the Hulk will be the backbone of the Avengers 5 team. Even without Cretton's involvement, Captain Marvel and Shang-Chi were always likely to have big roles in Avengers 5. Marvel continues to elevate Carol Danvers' role in the MCU, and The Marvels is positioned to be a huge movie in Phase 5. Meanwhile, Simu Liu's debut as Shang-Chi made him one of the best new characters in MCU Phase 4. They should now both get the chance to team up in a significant fashion after briefly meeting in Shang-Chi's post-credits scene. Based on how powerful Shang-Chi and Captain Marvel are in the MCU, Kang will have some significant firepower opposing him in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
  18. VPN detection service GeoComply helps rightsholders and streaming platforms ban so-called 'geo pirates', users who bypass geographical restrictions using online tools. Because some VPN providers use residential IP addresses to circumvent such restrictions, GeoComply is now blocking these as well. The company bills it as a revolutionary technology, but there might be a major downside too. geoguardVPN services are a useful tool to protect internet users’ online privacy. In addition, they can also help to bypass geographical restrictions. The latter can be helpful if people want to access the content library of a streaming service in another country. While this often goes against the terms of service, some VPNs openly advertise this feature. Blocking Geo-Pirates This ‘geo piracy’ issue isn’t new. Netflix famously started blocking VPN users for this very reason seven years ago and other streaming providers have taken similar measures. These countermeasures are effective but far from perfect. There are various ways VPN services have managed to circumvent these blocking efforts. Most keep the technical details private, but it’s commonly known that some are using residential IP addresses as proxies, to make it look like VPN users are regular ISP subscribers. These residential IP addresses are used to establish the connection with the streaming service and because they are typically not associated with a VPN, they can effectively bypass traditional blocklists. GeoComply Blocks Residential IPs Rightsholders and streaming providers are aware of this trick, but it’s hard to do anything about it. This week, however, cybersecurity and VPN detection service GeoComply offered a solution. The company announced an “industry-first technology” for streaming providers that “tightens the net around pirate viewers.” “The new technology enhancement to GeoGuard allows streaming providers to block the growing number of VPN users who spoof their location using hijacked residential IP addresses,” the company writes in a press release. GeoComply uses the term “hijacked” IP addresses, which deserves some nuance. In reality, these addresses often belong to users of free VPNs or proxies who allow their connections to be resold to third parties. This reselling right is often hidden in the fine print of terms of service agreements, which most people don’t read. “Free VPN providers profit by selling hijacked residential IP addresses to the highest bidder, usually a provider of ‘undetectable’ premium VPN services. These services give subscribers the ability to spoof their location using the hijacked addresses,” GeoComply notes. For example, users of the free Hola VPN service agree to have their connections used by Bright Data, which offers access to residential IP addresses to third parties. This has been going on for several years already but most users are simply not aware of it. GeoComply reports that its GeoGuard service can now spot these ‘hijacked’ residential IP addresses, which should make it harder for VPN services to evade blocking measures. “To combat this problem, we can now accurately detect users accessing streaming services using hijacked residential IP addresses to help uphold the territorial licensing models our customers depend on,” GeoComply’s James Clark says. Overblocking? According to GeoComply, an estimated 200 million internet users are the “victim of residential proxy IP abuse.” That implies that there’s a huge market for its new blocking capability but there are also downsides to consider. Blocking residential IP addresses means that the unknowing ‘victims’ can also find themselves blocked by streaming services, even though they’re not doing anything wrong. This is what we previously saw when Netflix expanded its VPN blocking capability too far. TorrentFreak reached out to GeoComply to hear the company’s thoughts on this overblocking potential and how this can be ruled out. At the time of publication we’re still waiting for more details. It’s clear, however, that GeoComply takes VPN blocking very seriously. In addition to rolling out these new blocking capabilities, the company recently petitioned the US Government to make VPN detection tools a mandatory copyright protection measure under the DMCA.
  19. Smallville’s story made Lana Lang’s controversial ending a necessary move for the show. While writing off Lana enabled Clark to get his comic book romance with Lois, how it was handled was met with a great deal of criticism. The decision to force Clark and Lana apart with Kryptonite was considered by many to be the wrong way of closing the door on this chapter in Superman’s life. After several years of being Clark’s main love interest, Smallville finally brought Lana’s story to an end in the season 8 episode, “Requiem”. Having discovered a way to acquire permanent powers, Lana thought she could finally live happily with Clark as a superhero duo, but it was not to be. A complex plot by Lex Luthor resulted in Lana’s skin being infused with Kryptonite, thus making it impossible for Clark and Lana to remain together. Thanks to Lex’s scheming, Lana left Smallville for good and never returned to the show. Based on the understanding that the romantic pairing of Clark and Lois was always Smallville’s endgame, it was assumed from the beginning that Kristen Kreuk's Lana Lang would have to leave at some point, but there was also this expectation that it would happen organically. In most Superman stories, Clark simply leaves Smallville and gradually gets over Lana. While this might sound better than Smallville literally forcing them to break it off, the show’s approach to their romance across seven seasons made an ordinary breakup feel like a disservice to the characters. It worked for other Superman stories, but not Smallville. After all, Clark and Lana’s relationship had evolved into an epic love story. It wouldn’t be fair to either character to treat it like a typical, failed teenage romance. Theoretically, Smallville could have dealt with the Lana problem by killing her off, but that wouldn’t have worked either. Lana’s death would have deepened the tragic element of their romance while also making it increasingly difficult for Clark to move on. After Lana’s departure, Smallville didn’t wait long before advancing Clark’s relationship with Lois, but it’s hard to imagine that story proceeding to the next stage so soon (or at all) if Lana had died. There was already a feeling from the show’s depiction of the Clark-Lana romance that she was the true love of his life, so killing her off would have only strengthened that notion. Clark most likely would have mourned Lana for years. Had Smallville not revived the romance at the end of season 4, it’s possible that the show could have found a less complicated way of concluding her arc, but that just wasn’t the case. Looking at the great, personal sacrifices that Lana made to protect Clark in Smallville season 6, the repercussions of Clark undoing her death in season 5, and other developments, the two had overcome a few too many obstacles for their relationship to end easily. Since killing Lana and a natural breakup both would have been bad ideas for her inevitable Smallville ending, “Requiem” truly was the best option of the three – regardless of the controversy that came with it.
