  1. Recently, a leak came out from Valve’s Steam data that talked about the number of players for each game game on the service. One of the bigger numbers for a particular game were the Doom player numbers, talking about how many people had bought and played the game on PC. Doom came out as a reboot back in 2016 and immediately became one of the hottest games out there due to its frantic gameplay, good story, and ludicrous action. The Doom player numbers that came from Steam tell us that there were a lot of people that were playing the game just on PC, and who knows how many others on the Xbox One and Playstation 4, its other platforms. And that, in turn, was before the game released on Nintendo Switch. The player numbers released for the PC version of Doom number 3,197,626. Those numbers were taken after the Steam Summer Sale as well, so they likely could have gone up from an already high number, plus with Bethesda’s E3 conference revealing “Doom Eternal“, a sequel to the game. If enough people got interested in Doom Eternal, it’s likely they would have taken advantage of the Steam sale to buy the first Doom and see what all the fuss was about. Doom was one of the two various Bethesda games that came out in the past few years that are revivals and reboots of popular first-person shooter series, alongside Wolfenstein: The New Order. Both ended up being extremely popular and selling very well, even though they lacked multiplayer (in Wolfenstein’s case) or the multiplayer wasn’t very good (in the case of Doom). If you haven’t played the game but would like to add to all of the Doom player numbers on the PC (if your PC can run it), you should play it before Doom Eternal comes out.
  2. Steam has swung the banhammer once more beginning July 17th, marking a new record for the Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) system with 60.000 targeted accounts in one day only. The new Steam ban wave is the biggest one we’ve seen for a long time, showing how the company isn’t treating cheaters lightly. According to SteamDB, More than 80.000 accounts were wiped during this Steam ban wave, with 28.440 of those bans happening on the first day. After that, another 61.466 accounts were hit by the banhammer on July 19th, marking a new record for the company. There’s no reported activity of Steam bans for today, however, players are not in the clear yet. This year has been the biggest one for bans on the platform, especially after the release of easy cheating methods, openly downloaded and used. Here are the most popular titles with Valve Anti-Cheat integrated: Dota 2 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Team Fortress 2 Garry’s Mod Rust Call of Duty: WW2 Left 4 Dead 2 ARK: Survival Evolved Killing Floor Dying Light If you’re still not familiar with the term VAC – Valve Anti-Cheat, let us fill you in. According to its Steam description, VAC stands for Valve Anti-Cheat, an automated system designed to detect cheats installed on users’ computers. If a user connects to a VAC-Secured server from a computer with identifiable cheats installed, the VAC system will ban the user from playing that game on VAC-Secured servers in the future. To ensure your account does not get VAC banned, use only trusted machines to play on VAC-Secured servers. If you are not sure whether or not the machine you are using to connect to Steam may have cheats installed, do not play on VAC-Secured servers. One thing you should also keep an eye for when playing games with VAC is when installing any game modifications like scripts or custom skins, and only downloading custom content from untrusted sources.
  3. A few days ago, director Allan Ungar released an Uncharted short movie on Youtube, starring Firefly and Castle protagonist Nathan Fillion. Even though the film is a fan made project, it went as far as to gain the appreciation of Naughty Dog and the franchise’s creative director. Undeniably, the aforementioned Uncharted short movie is exactly what we wanted from such a project. Ungar revealed that Naughty Dog has expressed their appreciation for it, with Uncharted Creative Director, Amy Hennig and CEO Neil Druckmann giving their “thumbs up” for the effort. Hennig said, according to Ungar: ‘You guys did a fantastic job, Allan! Warms these old cockles to see our baby brought to life like this. Never could’ve imagined it, when we set off on this journey 13+ years ago. Thank you!’ Director Ungar added that “even Neil Druckmann, who now directs Naughty Dog, took the matter to heart. When you get these people’s support, it means a lot”. It actually means so much that fan petitions have already started to make this a full-length film with the same cast. The last 24 hrs have been an absolute whirlwind. Still blushing from the love, praise, and adoration. Big thank you to all the fans and to all the people who have been watching, supporting and spreading. This was for you. pic.twitter.com/AUuKC1bD6E — Allan Ungar (@Allan_Ungar) July 17, 2018 Nathan Fillion was also there to comment on Ungar’s appreciation message by saying that “It makes you feel good”. This isn’t the first time for the actor to get involved with gaming projects as he lends his voice to Cayde from Destiny 1 and 2 and is also Gunnery Sergeant Buck in Halo 3, Reach and 5. Interestingly, a full Uncharted movie has also been announced, with a different cast this time. Tom Holland, the new Spider-Man will be the main protagonist in this one while Breaking Bad actor, Bryan Cranston is also being considered for an unspecified role. Let us know what you think about this Uncharted short film starring Nathan Fillion and whether or not you want to see a full-fledged movie with the same cast.
  4. Fortnite has become a game where you often develop connections with gamers online through the famous Battle Royale game mode. Players of related interests interact to help each other out in playing the game more effectively. Similar was the case with 13 years old Jake Bates of Mason, Ohio who met someone online but ended up getting conned into handing over his account’s private information to a player online. The fellow player cleverly convinced Jake into sharing personal details of his account and Jake got tricked in the course. Report on a news channel in Ohio suggests that Jake used to chat with the hacker via online video gaming. The youngster was misled into believing that the hacker would provide him with additional skins for his character and for this purpose Bates provided him the details of his account. Bates specifically gave him the username and password of his Fortnite account. However, Bates later got his email account hacked too. Passwords, recovery passwords and phone number were altered after hacking. Furthermore, Bates revealed that the hacker was now open to his credit card and personal information in the email account too. Just when it couldn’t be worse for the poor guy he deleted Bates’ Fortnite character also. Jake had used up hundreds of dollar worth money on his Fortnite character from the time he started playing the video game. Jake’s mother responded to this by saying: “It says on the game not to give your information out and, ya know, I’m like, it’s a lesson learned,” Jake and Amy Bates, his mother has also filed a complaint against Epic Games, the developers of the trending Battle Royal game. Following this account hack, Epic Games may have to worry about the protection of privacy of the user and their data.
  5. Funny video of moms imitating their kids playing Fortnite seizes the internet and it doesn’t get more hilarious and accurate than this. Fortnite has become the ultimate gaming obsession for kids and while some mothers started to get worried about the addition of this game, Whitney Cicero took this matter on a lighter note. Whitney Cicero, blogger at The New Stepford availed the chance to record her son playing Fortnite with his friends. Later on, Whitney uploaded a YouTube video of herself with a friend lip-syncing the silliness of their kids. As the video begins we can see the moms fixated on the screen to lip-sync the kids’ voices. The video includes pauses which are filled by the moms doing sick and equally absurd dance moves which are too much to handle, seriously. The entertainment continues and it gets to the point of discussing farts which is pretty gross but then again its kids they are mimicking. Then we are off to a point where the argument to “get off the internet” starts. This just shows how glued to the screen kids are as they can’t even take their eyes off while talking. We are also given a glimpse into a parallel world as the mom being shouted at is actually played by the child. Things get heated when the kid yells “Mom, This Isn’t A Joke!” which is so relevant because kids really do take it as a matter of life and death. The ending of the video is credited with the actual footage of the kids which was recorded earlier. The video was altogether a blast to watch and really shows how much Fortnite is recognized worldwide. The reason behind this recognition is not just Fortnite gameplay but the funny vibes it has spread in homes globally.
  6. Many gaming fans love to play old console games in browser emulations, but Nintendo is less amused by these fan-made recreations. Last week the company sued two sites that offered access to its games, and in a separate effort, the company also removed a repository from GitHub that offered access to Game Boy Advance games. Playing games through browser-based emulators is a niche pastime of some of the most dedicated gamers. For Game Boy Advance fans there are a few websites that offer this option, albeit without permission. Nintendo is not pleased with these unsanctioned projects which they see as clear copyright infringement. A few days ago, the company took action against a popular JavaScript-based Game Boy Advance emulator that was hosted on the developer platform GitHub. “The files located at the repository link https://jsemu3.github.io/gba/ contain unauthorized copies of Nintendo’s video game software in violation of the law and GitHub’s Terms of Service,” Nintendo writes. The repository in question offered JavaScript-powered versions of many popular titles including Advance Wars, Dragon Ball Z, Super Mario Advance, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and Legend of Zelda. The DMCA notice was filed late last week and GitHub removed the allegedly infringing files soon after. Repository offline The request came around the same time as the lawsuit that was filed against the LoveROMS and LoveRETRO emulator sites. While we can’t see an apparent connection between the two cases, Nintendo says that it is also considering legal action against the owner of the infringing GitHub repository. “We are considering action regarding those matters but are not including them in this notice,” Nintendo writes. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that Nintendo has gone after an infringing Game Boy emulator. A few years ago the company targeted a similar repository, with a similar name. And it may have more work on its hands, as there are several similar emulators still hosted on GitHub. One thing is quite clear though. Sites that offer emulators and ROMs are not welcomed by Nintendo, even those that don’t have a clear profit motive. As for the two sites that were sued last week. LoveRETRO took its site down “until further notice” over the weekend, while its partner site LoveROMS removed all Nintendo titles.
  7. Russian Embassy officials were to meet Thursday with a Siberian gun rights activist jailed in Washington on charges of spying on the United States, as Moscow blasted the arrest as "anti-Russian hysteria." The embassy said in a Facebook post that consular officials will meet with Maria Butina for the first time since her Sunday arrest, and will provide her "all necessary help." Butina, 29, denies wrongdoing, and the Russian government claims the arrest was driven by US domestic politics and an overall anti-Russian mood. US federal prosecutors accuse Butina of being a covert Russian agent, having contacts with the KGB successor agency FSB, and using sex and deception to forge influential U.S. connections. Court documents released at her hearing Wednesday outlined ways Butina allegedly worked covertly to establish back-channel lines of communication to the Kremlin and infiltrate US political organizations, including the National Rifle Association. Her father, Valery Butin, said the family has been unable to speak to Butina since her arrest, according to the TASS news agency. Butina grew up in a modest apartment building in the Siberian city of Barnaul, closer to the Mongolian and Kazakh borders than Moscow. One of her former teachers told The Associated Press that Butina initially thought she would follow her father's footsteps as an entrepreneur, and opened a string of furniture stores. But she developed an appetite for high-level politics after going to a special camp for young political hopefuls run by the pro-Kremlin United Russia party, said Konstantin Emeshin, founder of the School of Real Politics in Barnaul, where Butina got her first degree. "She came back inspired, having met lots of people," he said. Butina later moved to Moscow, started a gun-rights group, and then moved to the United States where she got a graduate degree in May from American University. US prosecutors say her studies were a cover for her covert activities. A video has emerged in recent days showing Butina graduating from college. Emeshin said that Butina was considering a job in Silicon Valley after graduation, and told him she felt herself "at a crossroads." A week before her arrest, Emeshin said, she contacted him on Facebook and asked for the contacts of specialists who defend "victims of political repression." She didn't elaborate. Butina had already been questioned by the U.S. Senate and had her apartment searched by the FBI in recent months. Butina awaits trial on charges of conspiracy and acting as an unregistered foreign agent for Russia. She pleaded not guilty Wednesday, but was ordered held in jail as the case moves forward because of fears she would flee the country.
  8. A man who shot and killed another man during an argument over a parking space will not be arrested or charged, police in the US state of Florida say. Michael Drejka, 47, was shoved over by Markeis McGlockton on Thursday after he confronted his girlfriend who was parked in a space for the disabled. Mr Drejka then shot Mr McGlockton once in the chest while still on the ground. Police say they did not arrest Mr Drejka because of the state's "stand your ground" or "shoot first" statute. The law gives protection from criminal prosecution or civil liability to people who claim self-defence after a shooting or violent incident. "I don't make the law. I enforce the law," Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri told a press conference on Friday. "I'm going to enforce it the way it's written. Others can have the debate about whether they like it or not." He said the case would be reviewed by the state attorney who will determine whether Mr Drejka should be charged. But the attorney would have to provide "clear and convincing evidence that [he] was not entitled to use force", the sheriff said. Footage of the shooting was recorded on CCTV outside the convenience store and shows Mr McGlockton rushing back inside the building while clutching his chest. Witnesses say he then collapsed before shoppers called 911. He was taken to hospital in the city of Clearwater and pronounced dead. The police say Mr Drejka was co-operative when they arrived and had a valid concealed weapons licence. The "stand your ground" law came under intense scrutiny following the fatal shooting of an unarmed teenager in 2012. George Zimmerman, a neighbourhood watchman, shot Trayvon Martin who was walking back from a shop in the city of Sanford. Florida police cited the law after they released Mr Zimmerman without charge on the night of the shooting. But more than 480,000 people signed a petition calling for him to be prosecuted. He eventually stood trial, but was found not guilty on all charges.
  9. The father of a 10-year-old girl who died after undergoing female genital mutilation (FGM) in Somalia has defended the practice. Dahir Nur's daughter died of blood loss on 17 July, two days after being taken to a traditional circumciser. But he told Voice of America (VOA) "people in the area are content" with FGM even considering the dangers, adding it is the country's "culture". According to Unicef, 98% of girls and women in Somalia have undergone FGM. This is despite Somalia's constitution prohibiting - although not outlawing - the practice, which involves the partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons and can cause profound health problems. Dr Abdirahman Omar Hassan, director of Hanano hospital in the city of Dhusamareb, told VoA he had never seen "anyone who was mutilated like that in my life". Dr Hassan, who was on the team who tried to save the girl, also revealed she had caught tetanus, most likely from the unsterilised equipment used during the original procedure. But Mr Nur said he did not want to pursue charges, and held no one to blame for his daughter's death. Hawa Aden Mohamed, director of women's rights group Galkayo Education Center for Peace and Development (GECPD), pointed out even if he did, it would be largely meaningless. "The woman who performed the operation has not been arrested but even if she was, there is no law that would ensure she is punished for the act," she told news agency Reuters. "This is just one among many cases happening on a daily basis across Somalia." Efforts to criminalise FGM in Somalia have been stalled by politicians, who fear it will alienate voters who believe it is a religious requirement, while girls who have not undergone it are reportedly taunted for not being cut.
  10. The G20 group of finance ministers have said trade tensions could undermine the global economy. They called for greater dialogue to reduce the risk after a tense, two-day meeting in Argentina. The summit comes as the US ramped up trade tensions on Friday, saying it was ready to slap tariffs on all $500bn of imports from China. France's finance minister, meanwhile, said the EU should not negotiate trade with "a gun to its head." In a joint statement, the G20 ministers said risks to growth "over the short and medium term have increased. These include rising financial vulnerabilities, heightened trade and geopolitical tensions." "International trade and investment are important engines of growth," they said, adding that they "recognise the need to step up dialogue and actions to mitigate risks and enhance confidence." The G20 summit comes as a trade war has escalated in recent weeks after the US opened fire on 6 July with tariffs on $34bn of Chinese goods. The US has since listed another $200bn worth of Chinese products to be targeted and has threatened tariffs on an even greater amount. US President Donald Trump also described the EU as a "foe" on trade last week. French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire warned that a trade war was now a reality at the G20 summit. He said the current US trade policy of imposing unilateral tariffs was based on "the law of the jungle". But US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin defended the tariffs and urged the EU and China to open their markets to allow free competition. The US has large trade deficits with both the 28-member EU and China. Given the US buys nearly four times as much from China as it sells to them, analysts fear it could seek alternative ways to get back at the US. The two-day summit in Buenos Aires brought together finance ministers and central bankers of the world's top 20 economies. What did the French minister say? "World trade cannot base itself on the law of the jungle and the unilateral increase of tariffs is the law of the jungle," Mr Le Maire said on Saturday. "The law of the fittest - this cannot be the future of global trade relations. The law of the jungle will only turn out losers, it will weaken growth, threaten the most fragile countries and have disastrous political consequences." He added that a trade war was now a reality, and that the EU could not consider negotiating a free trade deal with the US without America first withdrawing its tariffs on steel and aluminium. What is the US argument? Mr Mnuchin said it was pretty simple. "My message is pretty clear, it's the same message the president delivered at the G7 (last month in Canada): if Europe believes in free trade, we're ready to sign a free trade agreement with no tariffs, no non-tariff barriers and no subsidies. It has to be all three," he said. Mr Mnuchin said China had to open its markets "so we can compete fairly". Tariff war. How did we get here? Little has caused Donald Trump more annoyance than the trading deficits between the US and its major partners. He believes that if you have a trade deficit - if you import more than you export - you are losing out. Tackling what he has called "unfair trading practices" has become a key plank of his administration. The European Union, China and the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) countries, Mexico and Canada, have been his main targets. Mr Trump has pulled out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal and wants a renegotiated Nafta deal. The key actions so far January: The US slaps tariffs on imported washing machines and solar panels June: The Trump administration introduces tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminium imported into the US, arguing that global oversupply, driven by China, threatens American producers. The EU enacts retaliatory tariffs on a range of US goods, including bourbon whiskey, Harley Davidson motorcycles and orange juice July: A 25% tariff affecting $34bn (£25.7bn) of Chinese goods begins. China retaliates in kind, with equivalent tariffs on the same value of US goods. Mr Trump threatens a 10% additional tariff on $200bn worth of additional Chinese products, naming more than 6,000 items
