  1. Several large live streaming sites sued by DISH Network for breaching the anti-circumvention provisions of the DMCA have gone dark. SportsBay, the largest of the quartet, had around nine million visitors per month but an order issued by a Texas court requiring third-parties to hand over details of its operator may have set off alarm bells. Most pirate IPTV services online today operate by accessing official broadcasts and streams, capturing them with dedicated equipment, and then restreaming video to the public from dedicated servers. However, a US lawsuit filed late July shows that’s not the only way. DISH Sues ‘SportsBay’ Sites In an interesting complaint filed in a Texas court, DISH claimed that four sites doing business as SportsBay.org, SportsBay.tv, Live-NBA.stream, and Freefeds.com were offering sports broadcasts including the Olympics, NBA matches, NFL games, cricket and motorsports, we obtaining its content using a different method. According to DISH, the SportsBay site operators are able to circumvent the DRM technologies deployed by subsidiary Sling TV’s streaming system in order to provide their users with Sling programming, directly from Sling’s servers, for free. DISH went into some detail on how the operation works while alleging willful violations of the DMCA’s anti-circumvention provisions for which it deserves compensation. DISH Requests Subpoenas To Identify Defendants A few days after the complaint was filed, DISH informed the court that the defendants use many third-party service providers to promote, manage, and operate their SportsBay sites. These include domain registrar Namecheap and WhoisGuard, Tucows, Cloudflare, Digital Ocean, Google, Facebook and Twitter. Since the identities of the SportsBay sites’ operators are unknown to DISH, the company asked permission to subpoena these companies to find out their true identities. “These service providers are expected to have information that identifies the Defendants — those responsible for operating the Sportsbay Websites, circumventing and providing technologies and services that circumvent the security measures employed by Sling and provide DISH’s copyrighted television programming to Sportsbay users without authorization — and are thus the intended recipients of Plaintiffs’ subpoenas,” DISH told the court. Court Grants Expedited Discovery In an order handed down earlier this month, Judge Charles Eskridge at the District Court for the Southern District of Texas granted DISH’s request to serve subpoenas on the third-party service providers to obtain the identities of the SportsBay sites’ operators. The order also allowed DISH to serve subpoenas on other providers not listed in its earlier discovery motion. According to a status report filed this week, DISH reports that it filed seven subpoenas to the defendants’ service providers in early September, seeking relevant documents that identify the SportsBay operators. At the time of writing, ‘most’ of the third-party companies have yet to respond to the DISH subpoenas. This means that DISH still doesn’t know the defendants’ names, they have necessarily not been served, and none have responded to the lawsuit filed in the summer. At this stage DISH hopes to be able to amend its complaint with real names shortly but will probably need to file a request for an extension of time in order to properly serve the defendants. In the meantime, however, the SportsBay sites have disappeared. All Four Sites Go Dark, Millions of Users High and Dry It’s unclear whether the downtime at all four of the ‘SportsBay’ platforms is directly linked to the DISH lawsuit but it’s certainly possible that the serving of the DISH subpoenas has caused some level of concern at the pirate sites. There may also be some kind of unexpected technical issue but that seems less likely since other sites that appear to be using the same underlying infrastructure appear to be operating normally. In any event, the sudden disappearance means that huge numbers of SportsBay users are now faced with the prospect of finding an alternative. There’s certainly no shortage of replacements but with around nine million monthly visits, it’s safe to say that some disruption may be felt in live sports streaming, at least for a short while.
  2. Internet provider Wide Open West, better known as WOW!, has responded to a piracy liability lawsuit recently filed by several filmmakers. The Internet provider brands the movie companies as copyright trolls and asks the Colorado federal court to dismiss their complaint. According to Wow!, the rightsholders failed to back up their claims. Over the past two decades, online piracy has proven a massive challenge for the entertainment industries. Some copyright holders have tried to go after individual pirates in court but, increasingly, third-party intermediaries are targeted as well. There are several lawsuits pending in US Courts, where rightsholders accused Internet providers of not doing enough to stop piracy. One of the main allegations is that ISPs fail to terminate accounts of repeat infringers in ‘appropriate circumstances’, as is required under the DMCA. These lawsuits were pioneered by music companies, which had some success on this front, including a $1 billion verdict against Cox. More recently, however, a group of filmmakers adopted a similar strategy. These companies have already sued several Internet providers, including Wow!. Filmmakers sue WoW! Wow! is being sued by a group of smaller movie companies, including Millennium Media and Voltage Pictures, which have built up an impressive anti-piracy track record in recent years. They’ve gone after individual pirates and targeted various pirate sites, including torrent index YTS. The filmmakers now accuse the ISP of failing to terminate the accounts of subscribers who were repeatedly accused of sharing copyrighted material. As such, they hold Wow! liable for these pirating activities, which could lead to millions of dollars in damages. Wow! clearly disagrees with these accusations. In a motion to dismiss submitted this week, the ISP refutes the claim that it’s directly, contributorily, or even vicariously liable for subscribers’ alleged copyright infringements. Motion to Dismiss According to Wow! the evidence provided by the movie companies’ anti-piracy partner Maverickeye fails to prove any direct infringements. An IP address is not sufficient to prove that subscribers downloaded any infringing material, the ISP claims, pointing to the ‘Cobbler’ case. In addition, the secondary liability claims fail too, as the filmmakers can’t show that Wow! benefited financially from the pirating activity. Wow! charges flat fees for its internet service, which are the same whether subscribers pirate or not. “[T]he Complaint lacks plausible allegations detailing how WOW profited directly from the alleged infringement, which renders any financial benefit from the alleged infringement attenuated or incidental, and not ‘direct’,” the motion to dismiss reads. Wow! further argues that there’s no evidence showing that its Internet service was particularly appealing to pirates. Finally, the ISP notes that it simply couldn’t control or supervise any of the alleged infringements, which is also required to prove liability. Wow! Disconnected Hundreds of Subscribers These and other arguments will be reviewed by the court, which will ultimately decide whether this case can move forward. Many of the defense arguments are in line with what we have seen in previous cases, but there are key differences too. For example, Wow! points out that that it’s not ignoring piracy. In recent years, the company has terminated accounts of hundreds of subscribers for which it received multiple copyright infringement notices. “WOW has a robust program under which it notifies account holders of infringement allegations, suspends their internet access if the allegations continue, and then permanently terminates the account upon receipt of additional complaints.” On top of that, the Internet provider also puts the defendants, its anti-piracy partners, and the evidence in a different light. Trolls, a Victicious Person, and Strange Logs Wow!’s motion to dismiss characterizes the filmmakers and their anti-piracy partner Maverickeye as copyright trolls. These entities have previously sued individual file-sharers in various courts to extract easy settlements. “Plaintiffs and Maverickeye are part of a well-known web of copyright trolls. Until now, Plaintiffs’ modus operandi has been to file John Doe lawsuits in the hope of securing quick settlements and to dismiss them at the slightest resistance.” The ISP also points to several lawsuits where Maverickeye was accused of a wide variety of wrongdoings, including the use of expert testimony from a fictitious person. “Additionally, courts and litigants in these cases have persuasively accused Maverickeye of serious wrongdoing, such as submitting fraudulent ‘expert’ declarations from fictitious persons, violating state law by engaging in unlicensed surveillance, and even conspiring with copyright owners to offer copyrighted content over BitTorrent and then sue anyone who tries to download it.” These allegations will have to be tested in court, but it’s clear that Wow! is willing to ask tough questions. This also applies to the ‘testimony’ from YTS owner Senthil Segaran, which the filmmakers used as evidence. The site operator provided information from YTS’s logs and user database as part of an earlier settlement with the filmmakers. However, Wow! is not immediately convinced that this information is credible. All in all, Wow! believes that the complaint should be dismissed in its entirety. Whatever the court decides, this case will be interesting to watch, as the stakes are high. Besides millions of dollars in potential piracy damages, the filmmakers want Wow! to block various pirate sites and disconnect subscribers whose accounts are targeted by three unique infringement notices in three days.
  3. Chipper Cash, an African fintech start-up, has extended its peer-to-peer instant money service to South Africa. In addition to being able to use the remittance service, South African users will be able to buy, sell, and transfer cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, ethereum, and the USDC stablecoin. South Africa Ripe for Disruption and Innovation According to a report that quotes the start-up’s VP for strategy and partnerships in Africa, Pardon Mujakachi, Chipper Cash has made the foray into South Africa because it believes the country “is ripe for disruption and innovation in the financial services market.” The report also quotes the VP revealing the fact that it takes “three days for a person in the U.S. to send money to South Africa” while on the other hand, it takes up to 48 hours to move funds from one bank to another. It is such inefficiencies that often drive users to informal channels, argued Mujakachi. The VP also shared figures of the estimated number of users that are forced to use such informal channels. He said: People end up using informal channels to send money. If you look at the outbound remittances from South Africa, 68% is going through informal channels. Even with the domestic remittances, a sizeable amount goes through the informal channel. According to the Chipper Cash VP, it is such domestic remittances that will be the fintech firm’s starting point in South Africa. However, only verified users will be allowed to use this app. Dominance of Legacy Money Transfer Organizations Chipper Cash, just like other fintech start-ups before it, is attempting to claim a sizeable portion of the cross-border remittance market share from established money transfer organizations (MTO). By offering lower transaction costs, Chipper Cash potentially stands a chance of eating into existing MTOs’ market share. However, it remains to be seen if this mobile app is going to win over South Africa’s financially excluded groups. This is because in addition to lacking the required verification documents, some in these financially excluded groups have no access to devices that are needed to use the mobile app.
  4. A hamster that trades cryptocurrencies has been outperforming Bitcoin and the S&P 500 since June. The rodent, called Mr. Goxx, uses a device called the “goxx box,” to give signals and make purchases in front of the live streaming audience that follows him. Mr. Goxx has achieved an impressive current score of +24% and even got to +50% before the latest crypto selloff. Crypto-Trading Hamster Performs Better Than S&P 500, Bitcoin A cryptocurrency-trading hamster that streams trading signals through Twitch has been on a roll since June, outperforming fellow human traders and Bitcoin, with impressive gains of 24% over its starting portfolio. The rodent, called Mr. Goxx, uses a simple system built on top of an infrastructure called the goxx box, that allows him to pick a cryptocurrency and send a signal to the traders. The system (devised by Mr. Goxx’s human caretaker) uses a hamster wheel to pick a cryptocurrency, and two tubes which the cute trader crawls through then indicate if the selected cryptocurrency must then be bought or sold. The cryptocurrency portfolio of Mr. Goxx includes tron, xrp, cardano, and ether, among 30 other cryptocurrencies. Its portfolio started with $390 back in June and has increased to $498. Also, Mr. Goxx uses Twitter to report his portfolio movements, informing fans about the sales and performance of every trading session that Mr. Goxx engages in via his “office.” Impressive Following & Holding Tron The trading hamster has an audience of more than 3K followers on Twitch, being one of the cryptocurrency-related channels that stands out in a gaming-dominated platform. Mr. Goxx reached peak earnings before the recent cryptocurrency selloff when he attained more than 50% of his initial portfolio. However, even with all its positive returns, Mr. Goxx’s anonymous caretaker has still not gained the funds to pay for the initial investment that built the goxx box. The caretaker told Protos in an interview that: Mr. Goxx is happy to see that some of his investments finally pay off. Mr. Goxx has also shown an interesting preference for Justin Sun’s tron. It is currently the biggest bag held in the hamster’s portfolio. Mr. Goxx has never sold tron. Mr. Goxx’s current portfolio also includes stellar, ether, bitcoin, and xrp.
  5. There is nothing useful about a keyboard that types multiple letters when you don't want it to. It will activate unnecessary keyboard shortcuts, add mistakes to your writing and ruin your gaming sessions. Fortunately, if your keyboard makes you look like you're typing in a whole new language, there are ways to fix a keyboard typing multiple letters in Windows 10. Here's how to do it. 1. Restart your PC When going through any troubleshooting process, restarting your PC should be the first solution. Doing this might be enough to fix the problem as it clear any data slowing down your device and stops any tasks that are taking too much RAM. Also, a reboot might fix some of the hardware and peripheral devices. If your computer just downloaded an update, you should restart it to ensure smooth functioning. 2. Check Your Keyboard for Dust If your keyboard is a bit old, it might’ve collected enough dust or debris to stop it from working properly, especially if you prefer using mechanical keyboards. If you think this is the cause of your problems, you need to give your keyboard a good clean. Unfortunately, this goes further than turning your keyboard upside-down and shaking all the dust out. For a mechanical keyboard, you can use a key puller to remove the keys and thoroughly clean them or use a small air blower. If your keyboard is part of a laptop, it may be a sign that you need to clean out the insides too. Also, an improper connection could be the cause of your problem. If you are using a USB keyboard, disconnect and reconnect it or use a different USB port. RELATED:How To Clean Your Keyboard And Sterilize Viruses And Bacteria 3. Run the Windows 10 Keyboard Troubleshooter You can use Windows 10 built-in troubleshooters to fix some of the hardware issues. Follow these steps to run the keyboard troubleshooter: Right-click Start > Settings (or press Win + I). Head to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. From the Find and fix other problems section, select Keyboard > Run the troubleshooter. Follow the displayed instructions. RELATED:The Best Free Windows 10 Repair Tools To Fix Any Problem 4. Run the Windows Security Tool You can use Windows Security to scan your laptop or PC for malicious or corrupted files that could hinder the keyboard’s functionality. Here is how you can do it: Open Settings, then head to Update & Security. From the left pane, select Windows Security > Open Windows Security > Virus and threat protection. Click the Quick scan button. Windows 10 will remove any detected harmful files. Once the scan is complete, test your keyboard. 5. Update the Keyboard's Driver Your keyboard driver might be outdated or corrupt which is why there are some communication issues between the keyboard and the PC. To fix it, you should update the driver: Right-click Start > Device manager. Extend the Keyboard menu. Right-click the driver and select Update driver. If this doesn't find anything, locate your keyboard's manufacturer and model number and search for drivers on the company's official website. You can usually find both on a sticker on the keyboard itself. Failing that, look for packaging or find a receipt of the purchase for more information. 6. Check the Windows 10 Language Settings Windows 10 detects the default input language on your device but sometimes doesn’t get it right. This can then lead to keyboard-related issues. Here is how you can make sure you and your system are speaking the same language: Open Settings. Head to Time & Language > Language Keyboard. In the Override for default input method section, use the drop-down menu to select your preferred language. Also, you should remove any extra language packs or keyboard languages that you don’t use. Open the Language menu using the above steps and scroll down to Preferred languages. There, click the language you don’t use or have installed by accident and select Remove. 7. Change the Keyboard Repeat Delay In Windows 10, you can use keyboard settings to change its key repeat delay from short to long. Follow these steps to delay the time between repeated keystrokes: In the Start menu search bar, search for control panel and select the Best match. Go to the View by menu and select Large icons or Small icons. Select Keyboard to access its properties. Click Apply > OK to save the new settings. Get Back to Writing Accurately Once More It might be difficult to identify the exact cause of your keyboard typing multiple letters. Fortunately, there are multiple solutions you can try so you can get back to writing without any mistakes. If you tried anything on the list and your keyboard still has a mind of its own, maybe it’s time to replace it.
  6. Ubuntu is popular for its robustness and relatively fewer errors. But it's not without its bag of problems, for sure. One such problem is with its Wi-Fi driver. You might power up your system only to find that your Wi-Fi is not working. While there is no definite answer to why this happens, there certainly are various kinds of fixes that you can try to get it working again. Let's start with the simplest one first. 1. Check Your Internet Connection Can you see your network adaptor in the top-left corner? If yes, are you certain that it's connected to your network, and that your internet connection is stable? Verify this by connecting your other devices to the same network. If you can see the internet icon on other devices, then it's not a problem with the network. Something is probably wrong with your device. Jump to the next method if that's the case. But if your internet isn't working on different devices, the issue is probably with your network itself. You're better off calling your ISP then. 2. Plug In the Ethernet Cable Can you see the Wi-Fi icon in the top-left corner of your screen? If you can't, then there's probably some trouble with your Ubuntu Wi-Fi driver. To install a new one, connect the Ethernet cable directly to your PC or laptop. RELATED:What Is An Ethernet Cable? How Does It Work? After your computer is online, type software in the Ubuntu search bar and select the Software & Updates option. In the Software & Updates menu, go to the Additional Drivers tab, choose the wireless driver, and select Apply Changes. After the installation is complete, restart your system to see if your Wi-Fi is working or not. 3. Install Additional Wi-Fi Drivers From Ubuntu ISO It's not uncommon to lose important system files after an abrupt shutdown or an unlikely malware infection. And if your driver files have been deleted or become corrupt, then even the Wi-Fi icon can disappear from the menu. Whatever the reason be, a quick reinstallation of drivers should solve the Wi-Fi problem for your system. Grab a copy of the Ubuntu ISO file. Check if you have one in the Downloads directory. If not, get it from another computer that has a working internet connection. After you get your hands on the ISO file, copy it to your USB stick. Now plug in the USB drive and copy the Ubuntu ISO file to your home directory. Open the terminal, type the following commands, and hit Enter: sudo mkdir /media/cdrom cd ~ sudo mount -o loop ubuntu-* /media/cdrom With this command, you've now mounted the USB stick as if it was a CD. Now go to the applications menu, and select Software Updates. From there, select CD-ROM with the Ubuntu radio box and enter your password next. Then switch to the Additional Drivers tab and click on Apply Changes. Your drivers will get installed in a few seconds, and you should see the Wi-Fi icon on top again. RELATED:How To Extract ISO Files In Linux? 4. Reinstall the Network Manager Network Manager is a Linux utility that seeks to maintain your network devices and connections. It manages the Wi-Fi, Ethernet, PPPoE devices, and provides a lot of other miscellaneous services as well. And that's why your Ubuntu Wi-Fi can stop working if the Network Manager gets accidentally uninstalled. In some cases, Network Manager might still be available in the cache. If that's the case with you too, then execute this command to install Network Manager again: sudo apt install network-manager But, if you don't have the cache, you will have to plug in the Ethernet cable again. Run the above command again once you've done that. As a final step, if none of the above methods works, you will need to edit your configuration file. This guide uses gedit as the text editor, but you can use the text editor that you prefer. sudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces Amend it to read as follows: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet dhcp wpa-essid myssid wpa-psk mypasscode Then, restart the interface by typing: sudo ifdown wlan0 && sudo ifup -v wlan0 Fixing Your Wireless Network Issues for Good Losing your Wi-Fi can introduce many hiccups in your workflow. But hopefully, one of these methods helped you resolve your problems for now. In our experience, installing new drivers from the ISO works most of the time, but you can try out all the fixes one by one. Although problems do arise in Linux, it's a relatively stable and secure operating system worth learning—especially if you're looking into tech careers.
  7. Did you recently find out that Windows 10 is getting a new update with several bug fixes? It can be frustrating when the latest version of Windows is not available on your PC, despite using various tactics. Not updating your Windows can leave you in a lurch. Windows 10 updates bring several new features and improvements to your OS. Here is how to install the latest update of Windows 10 using some of Microsoft's inbuilt features. Why It Is a Good Idea to Keep Your PC Up-To-Date It can be tempting to stop a Windows update or to click “Remind Me Later” when a software update notification pops up so you can get back to work, thinking you'll do it later. This might seem harmless but delaying a software update is not worth the risk. Programmers try their best to optimize their software to prevent third-party intrusions. Such hackers may find loopholes in a program's source code and exploit it to retrieve your data. A software update finds these vulnerabilities and fixes them, making the program and the information you store on it more secure. Windows updates also address bugs. These are mistakes in the program code that causes the program to malfunction and display an error message. Having the program updated means you will experience the optimum performance from your software. Installing these updates can be tedious and sometimes inconvenient, but they will help out in the long run. Here are a few troubleshooting options that you can use to get the latest Windows update for your PC. Check Whether You Already Have the Latest Version Installed on Your PC The first and the most likely option is that you already have the latest version of Windows running on your computer, but you just didn't know about it. It might seem unlikely because you will be used to Windows bombarding your notifications with reminders and occasionally displaying pop-ups on your screen urging you to restart now. So how can it slip past you? It’s probably because of the Windows Update Medic Service (WUMS). To break it down, this is the software that runs in the background and is used to apply the small tweaks that Microsoft wants to implement that don't need the facility of a full-fledged update. It is also used to repair Windows update components to ensure that new instructions are executed smoothly and add supplementary data whenever needed. The Windows Update Medic Service is vital for any Windows OS to function properly. For any reason, Microsoft could need to patch up a minor bug or glitch immediately. Since a small issue like this doesn't warrant the need for an independent update file (but it is still very necessary), Microsoft introduces it via WUMS. For this reason, you cannot disable it from Task Manager and it will always be running in the background. You can try to disable it, but will have to do so from Windows Services Manager and you will promptly receive an Access Denied message. Also, even if you go through the trouble of disabling it using the Command Prompt, WaasMedic will restart it again at some point. WUMS will also withhold an update file from your PC and make it available at a suitable time to ensure that you are not being overwhelmed by updates and to improve user experience. It will reboot Windows Updates if it runs into a problem and attempt to repair it. If you notice that WaasMedicSvc is consuming more RAM or CPU, then it has most likely ran into this error. Another probable cause is that Microsoft simply hasn’t rolled out the update for your PC yet. In the past, we have seen Microsoft taking a slower rollout approach with some of its updates – this means that until Microsoft is sure whether your device is compatible enough for a seamless download experience, you won’t be given the option to update your Windows. Make Use of the Check for Updates Feature If you feel confident that your computer isn't running the latest version of Windows, you can check for any pending updates in the "check for updates" section. Hers's how to go about it for Windows 10: 1. Go to the Settings menu by clicking the Windows icon on the left side of the taskbar. Look for the Settings icon on the left. Alternatively, you can also use the shortcut Windows Key + I. 2. In settings, look for the Updates and Security and then select Windows update on the left 3. Then finally select the Check for Updates option. Check Whether Windows Updates Are On or Not It might just happen that the Windows Update Medic Service has been disabled. Even though Windows updates are automatic by default, it is worthwhile to check manually whether you are running the latest version of the operating system or not and whether you have set your preferred mode of download to automatic. Here's how you can do that on Windows 10: Go to Settings > Updates and Security > Windows update Next, see whether the Pause Updates for 7 days is enabled or not. If so, resume it. Having your software updates installed automatically is much better than having to do it manually. It also improves the servicing stack, which is what allows you to smoothly install the Windows updates by making it more robust. The Servicing Stack Updates (SSU) ensure that you can reliably install the latest cumulative updates, monthly roll-ups, and security updates. Use the View Your Update History Feature As a last resort, you can always check to see when your previous software update took place to assess the situation better. Microsoft does not offer two updates within a single month. If your Windows was updated recently, the chances are that another update won't be available for a few weeks. Go to Settings > Updates and Security > Windows update. Then select the View update history option. Run the Windows Update Trouble-Shooter In some instances, Windows Updates will not detect a new update or fail to download an existing update. If this happens, you can use the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter to fix the problem. There are three main reasons why Windows Updates might have run into a problem: The data location where the Windows Updates are stored has been moved. The troubleshooter will automatically try to set it to the default one. A potential database error kept Windows Updates from updating. The components of Windows Updates could be incorrectly configured. View Optional Updates Section Maybe you have all the primary Windows Updates and are looking for something extra to grease the groove, then there are a set of optional updates that optimize your PC and help certain hardware perform better. Simply search for View Optional Updates in the search bar, and click on the tab that appears on top. Done With the Update? Get Back to Using Your PC With the Upgraded Security Features! So, while downloading these software updates might be long and arduous at times, let's not forget the important role they play in protecting and securing our work behind the scenes. Once you have installed the latest version of Windows on your PC, you can get back to work knowing that your data is much safer now.
  8. If you've connected your PlayStation 5 to your network via Wi-Fi, chances are that you'll run into network problems sooner or later. Whether your PS5 won't connect to Wi-Fi, or network performance suffers in general, you can fix these issues. Follow the below steps in order to diagnose and resolve issues with your PS5's Wi-Fi connection. 1. Check Your Other Devices When your PS5 starts having network issues, you should first check other computers, phones, and consoles on your home network. If the issue is affecting everything, follow our guide to diagnosing home internet problems. The steps in that walkthrough should patch up all your problems, including your PS5's Wi-Fi issues. In case the problem is only with your PlayStation 5 and everything else works fine, continue on with the troubleshooting steps below. 2. Reboot Your PS5 and Network Equipment If you've done any troubleshooting before, you should know that rebooting all affected devices is an important first step. Restarting can clear up minor issues, and it's smart to do it first so you don't waste time on more intensive steps for no reason. First, you should fully restart your PS5. To do this, you'll need to be on the main menu; hit the PlayStation button on your controller to open it if you're in a game. Then hit the PlayStation button again to open the quick menu at the bottom of the screen. Scroll all the way to the right, select Power, and choose Restart PS5. This will fully shut down your PS5, then turn it back on. Alternatively, you can use the physical power button on the front of your PS5 to shut it down. On the standard PS5 model, the Power button is the one closer to the bottom of the console. On the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, there's no Eject button given the lack of a disc drive, so the Power button is the only one. Either way, press and hold the Power button on your PS5. When you hear one beep, continue holding it until you hear a second beep, then let go. This will fully shut down your PS5 and turn off its top lights. If you see orange lights, the PS5 is in rest mode and didn't shut down fully—turn it back on and try this again. If rebooting your PS5 doesn't fix the problem, restart your router and modem (if you have a combination unit, reboot that). Some models have a physical power switch you can turn off; if that's not available, unplug them for a minute or two, then plug them back in. 3. Confirm Your Wi-Fi Network Details If you haven't been able to connect your PS5 to Wi-Fi at all, you should next make sure that you have the correct credentials. There's a chance that you mistyped the password, or someone else with access to the network changed it. To enter your network details again, select the Settings gear from the top-right of your PS5's main menu. Then go to Network > Settings. Make sure you have Connect to the Internet enabled, then select Set Up Internet Connection. Under the list of Networks found, select your Wi-FI connection and enter your network's Wi-Fi password. Make sure you type the password correctly. If it still doesn't connect, and someone else manages the network in your home, see if they set a new password recently. After connecting, if you'd like to change other options, press the X button with your connection highlighted under Registered networks and choose Advanced Settings. Most of these won't generally apply, but as an additional troubleshooting step, you can try using an alternative DNS server for your system under DNS Settings. 4. Run the PlayStation 5's Network Test The PS5 includes a built-in test that tries to get online and connect to the PlayStation Network (PSN), then lets you know the results. If you're still not sure why your PS5 won't get online, you should run this. To go through the network test, head to Settings > Network > Connection Status. Select Test Internet Connection here to run a new check. Here's what the steps in this test mean: Obtain IP address: If this passes, your PS5 connected to your router and got an IP address successfully. Internet connection: When this succeeds, your console is able to get online. PlayStation Network sign-in: This final step makes sure you can connect to PSN to enjoy online games and other services. Connection speed: These should be in the ballpark of the speed you get from your ISP. If they're extremely low, your system likely has a weak Wi-Fi signal. If your PS5 is online but won't connect to PSN, you may need to forward ports on your router so that your console can access PSN services. If one of the other two checks failed, walk through the general network troubleshooting guide linked earlier. After you do this test, you might want to walk through the PlayStation Fix & Connect wizard. Select your problem from the initial screen, then it will walk you through some troubleshooting steps to hopefully resolve it. Most of these are the same tips we mention here, but trying Sony's tool might help you catch something you overlooked. 5. Move Your PlayStation Closer to Your Router Wireless technologies like Wi-Fi are susceptible to interference and only cover a certain distance before their signal degrades. To check how solid your PS5's Wi-Fi connection to your router is, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > View Connection Status and find the Signal strength field. If it's below 80% or so, you should take steps to improve this strength. If possible, move your PS5 physically closer to your router. Avoid having either device near common sources of interference, like microwaves or baby monitors. And remember that thick surfaces like concrete heavily impede wireless signals. 6. Stop Other Network Activity and Review Your Internet Plan Your home network only has so much bandwidth, so if there's a lot of other heavy activity going on, your PS5's network performance will suffer. Stop any other devices in your house that are downloading or uploading large files, streaming high-res video, or similar. This should free up bandwidth for your PS5 to perform at its best. In case nothing else is happening on your network and your PS5 still suffers from poor network performance, your internet plan might be insufficient for your needs. Read up on how fast your internet speed should be to figure out if you need to upgrade. And remember that even with a strong internet plan, lousy network equipment can act as a bottleneck. You might need to consider a new router from a trusted manufacturer as well. 7. Check PSN and Your ISP for Outages At this point, you've ruled out most minor issues and have improved your PS5's connection to your network. You should now check whether the issue lies somewhere else along the line—though it's rare, PSN could be down. Head to the PSN Service Status page on any device to have a look. If anything is wrong, you'll see a message about it here. You should also check your ISP for outages. Using mobile data on your phone, you can log into your account with your ISP and check its status page for issues in your area, or try a site like Downdetector to check for recent reports of problems. You can contact your ISP and let them know about the issue, but you'll probably talk to a robot. In case of issues on someone else's end, there's not much you can do aside from waiting for Sony or your ISP to fix the problem. 8. Connect With an Ethernet Cable We've focused on fixes for PS5 Wi-Fi problems here, but it's worth mentioning that you can resolve the hassles of wireless connections by using an Ethernet cable instead. With a wired connection for your PS5, you'll enjoy faster speeds and a more reliable connection. Whether you can connect your PS5 to your router with an Ethernet cable depends on your home setup. In some cases, you might be able to buy a long cable and snake it along the edges of your house's rooms. If this isn't feasible, consider buying powerline adapters, which run a pseudo-Ethernet network over the power lines in your house. Wi-Fi is convenient, but that's its only real benefit over wired connections. Wiring, if at all possible, avoids a lot of the instability problems Wi-Fi can have. Get Your PS5 Back Online With these tips, you can fix PS5 network issues when your Wi-Fi isn't working. They'll help you reconnect if your console won't go online, or patch up any reliability issues. Once your PS5 is ready to go again, make sure you're getting the most out of its lesser-known features.
  9. The make command is probably one of the most widely used commands in the Linux ecosystem. This command is used to build and compile programs directly from the source code. You can, as a Linux user, use the make command to compile utilities, and install them using the command line. But sometimes, the system throws the error "make: command not found" while users try to build a package using make. By the end, you will have a brief understanding of how to fix the "make: command not found" error in Linux. Fix the "make: command not found" Error While make is one of the standard Linux packages that come preinstalled in most Linux distros, sometimes it isn't available on a system. In this case, whenever the user tries to build a package using make, the system throws the command not found error. Before fixing the error, first, you need to verify if make is installed on your system. To do so, use the ls function to check the content of the /usr/bin/make directory: ls /usr/bin/make Further on, check if you are able to execute the command with its absolute path: /usr/bin/make --version The aforementioned command will display the version of make installed on your system. If the above methods don't work and display an error, then your system doesn't have make installed. In such situations, installing the make command solves the problem. But first, update your system's repository list using APT: sudo apt-get update Output: Then, install the make command: sudo apt-get install -y make Output: If the aforementioned commands don't work, you can install make by downloading the build-essential package, as follows: sudo apt install build-essential Output: The build-essential package consists of all the necessary packages related to package building and compilation. The make command is a part of these packages. RELATED:Why You Should Update Linux Package Repositories Before Installing New Software Troubleshooting Errors in Linux The make command is an essential compiler tool in Linux. The errors provided by the system are usually self-descriptive, and experienced users can figure out the solution by looking at the error statement. In addition to local workstations, Linux-based servers also throw such errors. You can fix most issues by performing a basic audit on the server.

  12. Computers make our lives easier, but our digital devices don’t come without problems. Occasionally, software acts up, hardware breaks down, and our Macs require a little extra care. When something does go wrong, the first step to fixing the issue is isolation to find out whether you’re dealing with a software or hardware problem. Here, we’ll discuss the steps you can take to isolate almost any software or hardware error with your Mac. Software vs. Hardware Issues Explained Software and hardware issues require different solutions, and knowing what you’re dealing with is crucial to remedying the situation. Software issues can include: Apps failing to launch Persistent error messages Apps or OS not behaving as expected Mac failing to complete the boot process And more Hardware issues can include: Erratic trackpad behavior Persistent display issues Keyboard keys not working No power And more In reality, some software problems listed could be hardware related and vice versa, which is why isolation is important. If, through troubleshooting, you identify a software issue, you can generally remedy the situation yourself. Hardware, however, could require an expert repairer. Although you can swap out some items yourself, such as power cables, peripherals, and certain internal components. For example, you can easily upgrade or replace RAM in some Mac models. Before performing any troubleshooting steps you should always backup your data and ensure that all software is up to date. Sometimes a software update is enough to resolve an issue. 1. Identify Any Recent Changes to the System When something suddenly goes wrong, you should ask yourself what changed. Did you install a new app, alter a setting, add a peripheral, or drop your device down a flight of stairs? Any of these scenarios could be the cause of a recent problem. To isolate further, you can: Uninstall a suspect application Revert any altered settings Remove all unnecessary peripherals, such as external drives and cameras Undo any other recent changes to the system Often, we see a clear cause-and-effect relationship between a specific action and the emergence of an issue. Unfortunately, identifying the source of a problem isn’t always that easy. 2. Run Apple Diagnostics If you’re troubleshooting an issue that has the hallmarks of a hardware malfunction, Apple Diagnostics—formerly Apple Hardware Test—is a useful tool. On completion, the test will either give the all clear or provide an error code that you can check against Apple’s database to identify your specific issue. The steps for running Apple Diagnostics are simple: Shut down your Mac. Remove all unnecessary peripherals. Connect your Mac to power. Ensure that your device is on a flat, stable surface with good ventilation. For Intel Macs, turn on your device and hold the D key until a progress bar appears. For Apple silicon Macs, hold the Power button until the startup options screen appears. From here, press Cmd + D, and the diagnostic program will load. Once the test completes, you’ll know if your Mac has any obvious hardware issues. 3. Boot to Safe Mode Safe mode is an excellent way to identify the source of a problem. The boot mode prevents startup items and caches from loading, which can help isolate issues caused by those items. To boot to safe mode on an Intel Mac, simply hold the Shift key during startup. On an Apple silicon Mac, the process differs: Hold the Power button until the startup options screen appears. Click the startup disk—usually Macintosh HD—to select it. Hold the shift key so that Continue in Safe Mode appears beneath the drive icon. Click Continue in Safe Mode. RELATED:How To Clear The System And Internet Caches On A Mac Due to a disk check during startup, safe boot takes longer to load than normal, so there’s no need to panic if the progress bar is dragging along. When booted, you’ll see Safe Boot written in red in the top-right corner of the screen. If safe boot resolves the issue, an item launching during startup or login is likely causing the problem. To remedy, you can try removing login items and other launch agents from the system. Additionally, clearing the system cache folders is an effective step when safe boot solves an issue. 4. Test in a New User Account If the problem persists, you’ll need to determine if the issue is system wide or if it only affects a single user. The best way to do this is to create a new admin user account, which you can delete when you’re done. The steps to create a new admin account are as follows: Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups. Unlock the Padlock. Click the plus (+) button. Choose the Administrator account type. Fill in additional details and click Create User. You can now log out of your current user and into the new admin account. If the problem persists, you’ll know the issue extends to the entire system. If resolved, you’ll need to determine what in your original user account is to blame. 5. Boot to the Recovery Partition The recovery partition provides an area outside of the main OS to troubleshoot system-wide issues. In almost all instances, a software glitch won’t extend to the recovery space. If, however, the problem continues here, you’re likely dealing with a hardware malfunction. To boot to recovery on an Intel Mac, simply hold Cmd + R during startup. RELATED:A Quick Guide To MacOS Boot Modes And Startup Key Combinations The process on an Apple silicon Mac is as follows: Hold the Power button until the startup options screen appears. Select Options. Click Continue. From the recovery partition, you can troubleshoot basic system-wide issues relating to sound, keyboard and mouse, graphics, Wi-Fi, and more. You also have access to Safari, which can help with isolating web-related problems. As mentioned, an issue that extends to the recovery partition is likely to be hardware related and may need a repair to remedy. Apple Diagnostics is a great tool, but it doesn’t always pick up every problem, and some devices will require further analysis. What Happens After Isolation? At times, our software and hardware can fail us. When trouble does strike, knowing how to isolate an issue is important. Often, the cause of a glitch is a recent change, and identifying any new system alterations can help isolate the problem. For hardware issues, Apple Diagnostics is an effective tool. But when it comes to software, safe mode and a new admin user account can help isolate many problems. Additionally, the recovery partition is useful for troubleshooting system-wide glitches. A confirmed hardware malfunction means either a DIY repair or professional service, depending on the circumstances, and the most stubborn software issues can require a full system reinstall. Nonetheless, isolation is the first step to solving any problem.
  13. When you buy a new game, you expect it to simply work. In most cases that's what happens. But sometimes, games crash. Sometimes it's a fault with the game itself, while other times it's due to inadequate hardware or a slow internet connection. Working out why your favorite game (such as Minecraft) is crashing can be tricky. So, read on to find out why your games keep crashing and how to fix them. Why Does Your Favorite Game Keep Crashing? If you're not sure what is causing your game to crash, you can take advantage of the Windows Event Viewer tool to keep a log on what is happening to your PC when the game crashes. This can be used for diagnostic purposes. It is also worth running demo versions of games before installing the full version, just to ensure that the title will play correctly on your PC. If games like Minecraft, Apex Legends, or Call of Duty: Warzone keep crashing, here are 10 reasons why that may be happening... Your computer's spec is too low You overclocked too high The game's settings are wrong Your graphic card requires too much power You need to upgrade your operating system You need to upgrade device drivers Your network isn't fast enough Digital Rights Management is causing problems Games are running in the wrong mode Your antivirus is crashing games Using a VPN is slowing online games to the point they crash You have too many browser tabs open Let's explore these reasons why games keep crashing on your PC and find solutions for each of them. 1. Your Hardware Specs Are Too Low It might seem obvious, but people still omit to compare their system spec with a game's minimum requirements. You wouldn't buy diesel for a petrol-powered car, would you? So why buy a video game without checking that it will work? When buying games online from Steam and similar services, you can check the system requirements by reading the game's description. Buying from a video game store? On the back of a video game box you'll find the minimum and recommended system requirements. If your PC meets these before installing and running the game everything should be fine. Otherwise you'll probably experience problems with the title. Wikipedia is also a great source of video game system specs, while the publisher's website will provide the same information. Settle doubts or questions by checking the game's support or fan forums for help. Without suitable hardware, you'll need to upgrade your PC before you can play the game. This can mean anything from buying a new gaming PC to adding extra storage space to your computer. 2. Games Crashing From Too Much Overclocking Many gamers overclock their systems, pushing the CPU to a faster speed to gain performance benefits. When coupled with good ventilation and cooling, CPU overclocking can reap great results. However, it isn't a perfect method of increasing performance. Games can still crash. Troubleshooting an overclocked system means resetting your processor (and GPU, if appropriate) to default settings. If this doesn't fix the issue, then there is every chance it's related to something else. 3. Get the Game's Settings Right Most games, especially those with high system requirements, have a dedicated video settings screen. Designed to help you get the most out of your game, it's common these days for games to boot with a configuration designed for your system hardware. However, that doesn't always work out, resulting in games crashing. It could be anything, from top end graphical experiences like Red Dead Redemption 2 to something more basic like Minecraft or A Way Out crashing mid-game. In some cases, your entire PC might crash. Avoid these problems by opening the video configuration screen for your troublesome game and lowering the settings. Switch every option down a single step, then try playing again. Repeat until you hit the right mix of performance and graphics. Admittedly, this solution isn't perfect. If the graphics aren't up to scratch, it's time to consider buying a new graphics card to stop games crashing your PC. RELATED:Which Nvidia GPU Is Right For Your PC? 4. Your Graphics Card Is Too Powerful for Your PC One common reason for games crashing is a problem with the power supply unit (PSU). This is commonly linked to the graphics adapter demanding more power than is available. There is one simple way to resolve this. Upgrade to the best PSU capable of providing enough power to play the game. Before swapping out the PSU, however, check that the graphics card and PC interior is clean and free from dust. A build-up can increase the temperature inside a PC and put additional load on the CPU and video card. Greater load means a higher temperature. If the build-up of dust is considerable and the fans are not sufficient for cooling, disaster will strike. 5. Your Operating System Isn't Good Enough Also listed in your game's system specification is the correct operating system and version required to run the title. Most games will run on Windows 8.1, Mac OS X 10.4 (Mojave), and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and later. While this isn't necessarily true across the board (some titles are still limited to Windows), it's a good guide. Similarly, most AAA games are designed for 64-bit systems. Naturally, the issues of operating systems and hardware are closely linked. Older hardware running Windows XP is suitable for running the most up-to-date video games. Using an old operating system is almost guaranteed to make your games crash. 6. It's Time to Update EVERYTHING If you're wondering why games keep crashing on your PC, you might have considered upgrading your hardware. But this is expensive. First, trying updating drivers instead. Games can crash for reasons beyond (but not unrelated to) unsuitable hardware and operating systems. Video drivers, for instance, should be up to date, as should the game itself. To update your video drivers, visit the manufacturer's website and download the latest version of the driver. The installation may require you to restart your computer. You should also look for any patches and updates for the game in question. These will be available from the publisher's website and should be installed and applied before running. Some games will automatically check for updates and install them before they load. Update your operating system to download any driver updates for devices such as network cards. Download the latest graphic drivers and updates for your graphics card. Your Game Keeps Crashing Because of Network Issues With online gaming, crashes can occur when network problems cause delay the game client being updated by the remote server. Avoid this being an issue by making sure that your network speed is suitable for playing the game. You should also check your router and disable other internet applications to ensure that only the game receives data. Avoid Wi-Fi where possible with online games. Instead, connect your PC to the router over Ethernet. If this isn't possible due to architectural limitations, buy one of the best powerline adaptors. 8. Snagged By Digital Rights Management Incredibly, Digital Rights Management (DRM) can cause performance issues. In some cases, network issues can contribute to DRM hitting a game's performance. Usually, though, the DRM client or the status of the remote server will be causing your game to crash. If an offline play option is available here you should take it. This will prevent the DRM from checking with the remote server for suspicious activity in the game or account. Otherwise, you'll be left with no choice but to uninstall the game. 9. You're Running Games in the Wrong Mode It makes sense to ensure that no other software is running while gaming. You might need voice chat software like Discord; beyond that your PC resources should be focused on running the game. This is a rule that applies across operating systems, from Windows, macOS, and Linux, to iOS and Android. Close all other software before launching the game you want to play. With Windows you have an additional advantage: Games Mode. This is a state that you can switch into that reduces and limits other activity. Notifications are silenced; everything is focused on the game. To enable Games Mode: Open Settings (hold Win + I) Go to Gaming > Game Mode Click the toggle to enable the feature. Does this sound too good to be true? Well, it's certainly worth trying. READ MORE:Does Windows 10 Game Mode Improve Performance? 10. That PC Game Keeps Crashing Because of Your Antivirus Software Another problem that can make your games keep crashing is antivirus and anti-malware software. As noted above, anything that is running in the background can impact performance of gaming. But antivirus is slightly different, as it is actively looking for suspicious files. Sometimes, these files are scanned, resulting in two potential issues: The PC hangs, then crashes, due to security scanning Your game crashes because an innocent file is identified as dangerous and quarantined Is there a solution to this? You have three options: Reduce the level of (or disable) file scanning when gaming Change your security software for one with a "game mode" For the duration of your gaming session, disable the software (if possible – antivirus software recognizes this action as malware) Check the online help for your security software to find the correct steps on these solutions. 11. Is a VPN Causing Games to Crash on Your PC? It isn't only security software that can impact game performance and potentially cause a crash. Your VPN software can also cause games to keep closing on your PC, particularly online games. This can occur if the VPN server is brought down, or if the VPN client isn't able to maintain a connection. Distance can also play a part. If you're attempting to play a specific game server – perhaps one based on the other side of the planet – then you have a dual issue of latency and any delay through the VPN. Either of these alone can lead to a game crashing. Both happening at the same time will almost certainly crash your game. So, what are the solutions? Upgrade to a faster VPN Invest in a faster internet connection Avoid using a VPN to access that specific server, even if it does mean restarting the game. READ MORE:Why Gamers Need A VPN 12. 20 Open Browser Tabs Will Crash Your PC Games Shutting down other apps when gaming applies to your browser, too. If you need to access them, do so on your mobile. Let your PC do the work you expect from it, giving you an awesome gaming experience without crashing. Your PC Games Have Stopped Crashing By now you should know what the problem is. You have everything you need to ensure your games don't crash. So, have fun gaming! Are you finding that you can't play top rated games because your hardware isn't up to scratch? Perhaps it's time to consider cloud gaming.
  14. Wouldn't it be annoying to have to re-enter your credentials every time you open the Chrome Browser? Certainly. While Chrome is known for its speed, simplicity, and usability, you may encounter certain bugs. One common issue you may experience in Chrome is when the browser logs you out every time you close it. Here are a few fixes that you can try to resolve this issue. 1. Checking Chrome Sign in Settings Google Chrome has a feature that allows you to disable signing in to the browser. For those who cannot sign in or are constantly logged out of Chrome, proceed to the steps below to determine whether this feature is turned off. Click on the three vertical dots in the top-right corner. Go to Settings from the dropdown menu. Navigate to Sync and Google services option. Turn on the Allow Chrome Sign-in by dragging the toggle to the right. Once done, tap on Relaunch to apply the changes. If the problem persists despite Chrome sign-in option being enabled, proceed to the next fix. 2. Turn On Cookies in Chrome Chrome won't remember your sign-in information unless you enable cookies. A cookie not only allows websites to remember your login information, but also keeps track of your shopping cart and other abandoned purchases. Chrome may log you out if you don't have cookies enabled in your browser. You can check that by following these steps: Tap on three vertical dots at the top right and go to the Settings in Google Chrome. On this page, navigate to Cookies and other site data. If the cookies are already enabled in your browser, tap on Cookies and other site data to open up general settings for cookies. Here, make the following changes: Toggle off the switch right next to Clear cookies and site data when you close all windows. Check whether you have mistakenly added one or more sites in Sites that can never use cookies or Always clear cookies when windows are closed options located at the end of the Cookies settings page. Lastly, make sure your antivirus is not deleting cookies after every scan. Try disabling your antivirus and logging into any website to see if your browser retains any information this time. Change your antivirus or tweak your antivirus settings if that's the culprit. RELATED:Hidden Chrome Features That Will Make You More Productive 3. Turn Off Chrome Sync When you enable the Sync option in Chrome, you can sync your bookmarks, history, auto-fill information, and login credentials for various websites. You can then access your synced data on any device using the same account. Chrome might not be syncing your account if it is losing your login information or if it is not keeping it consistent across different devices that are using the same account. This is how you can turn it on: Click on three vertical dots in the upper-right corner. Go to Settings and tap on the Turn on sync.. option. 4. Turn Off Your Chrome Extensions It's also possible for extensions to interfere with browser processing, although this is rare. If you use a security or privacy extension, it likely logs out your account when the browser is closed. Try turning off particular extensions from Chrome, or if the problem persists and you don't have too many extensions installed, try disabling them all. Tap on three vertical dots in the top-right corner. Navigate to More tools > Extensions. Slide the toggle to the left to turn the extensions off manually. 5. Updating Chrome Version You could be vulnerable to malware if you are using an outdated version of Chrome, so this might also be the reason Chrome is logging you out. Try updating your browser once to see if that fixes the problem. You can check if your browser has been updated by following these steps. Click on three vertical dots and navigate to Help > About Chrome. If Chrome is updated, you'll see a message “Google Chrome is up to date”. If a new update is available, tap on Update and relaunch the browser once to execute the changes. 6. Resetting Chrome If none of the above fixes has worked, reset Google Chrome once. By resetting the browser, all settings are reset to default. Be sure to enable sync and cookies settings again if resetting Chrome turns them off. Here is how you can reset Google Chrome. Click on three vertical dots in the top-right corner. Navigate to the Settings from the dropdown menu. Scroll down and expand the Advanced settings at the bottom of the settings window. Tap on Restore settings to their original defaults. Tap on Reset Settings in the popup window. Most of the time, resetting the browser resolves the problem. If you do this, your browsing history and bookmarks will be erased, and your settings may be reverted, so back up your data before you reset the browser. Also, go through all major settings once to make sure they are correct after you reset Chrome. RELATED:How To Use Chrome On Mobile Like A Pro 7. Switching Account in Chrome Make sure Google Chrome isn't logging you out of a specific account. Check if Chrome treats the same account the same way on another PC. Start using a new account if it's an issue with your account by transferring your sync data over. Chrome can also make a specific Google account the default and log that account in every time you open the browser. Make sure that's not the case in your browser. A temporary account change can solve the problem, and you will then be able to sign in to your other account with which you were having difficulties earlier. Remove Chrome Logging You Out Problem If you keep the sign-in data saved in your browser, you won't have to sign in to Google services like Gmail, Drive, etc., every time. You save both time and effort this way. Although Chrome is one of the best, minimal, and most powerful browsers, you won't like spending a lot of time fiddling with it. So, if it's laggy, speed it up!
  15. The makers of popular films including "Hunter Killer," "Automata," and “I Feel Pretty” are demanding over $10 million in piracy damages from VPN provider LiquidVPN. The movie companies ask the court to issue a default judgment since the VPN provider failed to show up in court. Meanwhile, LiquidVPN's website seems to have disappeared. A few years ago piracy-related lawsuits were pretty straightforward. Copyright holders would either sue alleged file-sharers or the operators of pirate sites. In recent months, we have seen a new breed of lawsuits filed on behalf of the makers of movies such as “Hunter Killer,” “Automata,” “Survivor,” and “I Feel Pretty.” These lawsuits target VPN providers, which are generally seen as third-party intermediaries. This includes LiquidVPN. The company was taken to court in March, shortly after the former owner was sued in a separate lawsuit. The current owner, Puerto Rico company 1701 Management, is allegedly linked to U.S. resident Mr. Muszynski, who continued operating the service. While running a VPN is not copyright infringing, the movie companies accuse the service of encouraging and facilitating piracy. VPN-related Copyright Infringement The complaint mentions a variety of other examples where the defendants directly or indirectly referenced copyright infringing activity. This includes a screenshot of Popcorn Time which shows the Millennium film Survivor. The movie companies argue that, through various public statements, LiquidVPN ‘encouraged’ users to use its service to pirate movies. “The LiquidVPN Defendants describe their VPN service as a tool to ‘Watch Popcorn Time without being detected by your ISP and P2P tracking software’ and promote it as a tool that can be used to pirate copyright protected content ‘without the risk of getting caught by your ISP or anyone else’,” they wrote. Default Judgment Despite the serious allegations, 1701 Management and its alleged owner failed to respond in court. As such, the film companies are now requesting a default judgment in their favor. The movie companies claim that Mr. Muszynski, a Florida resident, is the driving force behind the shelf company 1701 Management, which bought LiquidVPN from its former operator two years ago. According to the legal paperwork, there are still claims on outstanding payments for this deal, which the movie companies have taken over from the former owner. The main allegations relate to copyright infringement, however. According to the plaintiffs, it is clear that LiquidVPN crossed a line and should be held liable for direct and contributory copyright infringement, among other things. No Safe Harbor The motion for default judgment argues that LiquidVPN isn’t entitled to a safe harbor defense because it failed to implement a repeat infringer policy. In addition, the company didn’t have a registered DMCA agent. “The LiquidVPN Defendants have no safe harbor from liability because they fail to implement a policy for terminating repeat infringers and have not even registered a DMCA agent with the Copyright Office,” the movie companies write. The repeat infringer angle is noteworthy because many other VPN services don’t take action against repeat infringers either. VPNs generally don’t log IP-address allocations, which makes it pretty much impossible to track repeat offenders. No Logs, No Excuse The movie companies argue that this isn’t a valid excuse, as LiquidVPN willingly chose not to keep logs. “[T]he LiquidVPN Defendants cannot use their policy of not logging their subscribers’ access to provide anonymous IP addresses as an excuse for not terminating repeat infringers. A defendant who disables itself from doing anything to prevent infringement does not reasonably implement a repeat infringer policy.” These and other claims are novel issues and there is little VPN-related jurisprudence. However, without a defense in court from LiquidVPN, these arguments won’t be actively contested in court. Millions in Damages All in all, the movie companies demand compensation on various grounds. This includes the maximum statutory damages of $150,000 for each of the 66 works included in the complaint. This amounts to $9,900,000. In addition, the movie companies request $1,650,000 for DMCA violations. The case comes with a trademark twist as well. The Hawaiian company 42 Ventures, which is operated by anti-piracy lawyer Kerry Culpepper, owns the “Popcorn Time” trademark and requests $100,000 for unauthorized use by LiquidVPN. In addition to the damages, the movie companies also request an injunction that requires LiquidVPN to terminate the accounts of repeat infringers. In addition, the service should block access to the pirate sites YTS.MX, Piratebay.org, rarbg.to, 1337x.tw, and popcorn-time.tw. Interestingly, the mentioned Pirate Bay domain doesn’t point to the official site, but a Pirate Bay proxy. That said, it’s unsure whether any blocking action is actually needed at this point. At the time of writing, the LiquidVPN website appears to have disappeared, as it’s currently returning a Cloudflare connection error. The client area of the website is still online.
  16. For the past five years, piracy release site Snahp.it has provided information and links to all kinds of pirated content including movies and TV shows. The site operated in the so-called DDL niche, relying on content hosted elsewhere to service its users. Citing safety and security concerns, the site has now shut down, despite healthy levels of traffic. At the turn of the century when server bandwidth was at a premium, peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing stepped in to solve the problem. Rather than a small number of individuals having to foot the bill, sharers picked up their own parts of the traffic tab by sharing content with their peers. In the mid-2000s, server bandwidth became much more affordable and as the years progressed, storing media for direct delivery to end-users became a much more viable option. This gap in the market was serviced by early pioneers including Megaupload and Rapidshare but that was just the beginning of a market that was set to explode. By the early 2010s there were dozens of large file-hosting platforms where movies, TV shows, games, apps, and other content could be stored for direct download. However, since most of these sites had no public indexing feature, the key problem was finding a way to direct users to the content. This is where DDL (Direct Download or Direct Download Links) sites came in. Platforms like RLSLOG had been operating in this niche for years by reporting on pirate releases and then providing direct download links to content stored on external services. That site threw in the towel just this week, a fate that is now shared by Snahp.it, a relative newcomer to the market but one that made its presence felt nonetheless. Snahp.it Aimed To Provide Better a DDL Experience While there is no shortage of similar DDL sites, Snahp.it said that its aim was to provide a better DDL experience. The main aim of many piracy-focused file-hosting services (often referred to as ‘cyberlockers’) is to make life so difficult for downloaders that they cave in and buy premium subscriptions. By claiming to link to less exploitative file-hosting services, Snahp.it hoped it could set itself apart from the crowd with a more user-friendly experience. After being founded in 2016, Snahp.it developed a sizeable and loyal userbase but this week, just like RLSLOG, it too has thrown in the towel. “Today, on the fifth anniversary of Snahp, with a heavy heart we announce the end for the blog effective immediately,” a notice on the site reads. “Snahp was originally launched in 2016 to replace DDLs riddled with the worst possible filehosts. However, the top priority for us has always been the safety and security of each and every member on this blog, which has been an increasing concern as of late.” When it comes to piracy-focused file-sharing platforms, the terms ‘safety and security’ are most often associated with legal trouble. The site doesn’t mention any specific threat but considering SimilarWeb reports that the site still has around four million monthly visitors, throwing that away will not have been a decision reached lightly. Snahp.it is Regularly Targeted By Members of ACE While no direct threat is mentioned by Snahp.it, the site regularly receives attention from major copyright holders, including those that are members of the global anti-piracy coalition Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment. According to Google data, in the past month alone the site has been targeted with takedown requests filed by some of the biggest names in film and TV including Disney, NBC Universal, Studio Canal, Sony Pictures, Fox and Columbia Pictures. The DMCA takedown numbers aren’t huge when compared to Snahp.it’s overall traffic but there is a clear interest from major copyright holders and if threats haven’t already been received, ACE’s considerable activity levels suggest that probably wouldn’t remain the case forever. As revealed in the Snahp.it shut down message, the site has packaged up its posts if anyone wants to download for posterity.
  17. Several U.S. lawmakers see China’s authoritarian crackdown on cryptocurrency, including bitcoin, as “a perfect opportunity for American leadership on cryptocurrency.” One senator noted that it is “a reminder of our huge structural advantage over China.” US Lawmakers Comment on China’s Cryptocurrency Crackdown Following the latest news of China’s crackdown on cryptocurrency, several U.S. lawmakers have shared their views on the situation. Senator Pat Toomey from Pennsylvania said: China’s authoritarian crackdown on crypto, including bitcoin, is a big opportunity for the U.S. It’s also a reminder of our huge structural advantage over China. “Beijing is so hostile to economic freedom. They cannot even tolerate their people participating in what is arguably the most exciting innovation in finance in decades,” he added. “Economic liberty leads to faster growth, and ultimately, a higher standard of living for all.” The pro-bitcoin senator from Wyoming, Cynthia Lummis, who has been trying to educate her colleagues in Congress that bitcoin is a great store of value, chimed in. Commenting on Toomey’s tweet, she wrote: “Gradually, then suddenly. Closer to the ‘suddenly’ phase by the day. Keep up the education on the Hill. It’s spreading.” Congressman Tom Emmer from Minnesota opined: “Digital. Authoritarianism. China is forcing its citizens away from decentralized currency and onto the digital yuan so the CCP can track all money movements. You fear Big Brother? Then you should also fear what the Fed might be designing.” Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell recently said that the Fed will soon publish a discussion paper on a central bank digital currency (CBDC). Emmer further stated: Open. Permissionless. Private. If China bans it, you know it’s something worth fighting for. U.S. Representative Warren Davidson from Ohio described: “America has an incredible opportunity to protect personal digital wallets, embrace true distributed ledger technology, and strengthen our advantage over China’s authoritarian Communist Party.” Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who is trying to make his city a bitcoin hub, stressed: “China banning bitcoin is a massive mistake with impacts that will be felt for generations. Their loss is our gain and America can and will lead the future by providing a clean power home for bitcoin miners and all who are building on/with/for bitcoin.” Congressman Patrick McHenry from North Carolina concurred with the mayor of Miami. “You’re exactly right Mayor Francis Suarez,” he replied to the mayor’s tweet, emphasizing: China’s decision to restrict access presents a perfect opportunity for American leadership on cryptocurrency.
  18. Recently a student from the University of Kent in London was robbed at knifepoint for his bitcoin. After eight thugs stormed his dorm room and demanded that he reveal his crypto credentials and passwords, the student was forced to leave the campus and he moved back home. Freshmen College Student Loses Bitcoin in an On-Campus Mugging A recent report shows that a college student who started the year as a freshman was robbed at the University of Kent, a school located in the historic city of Canterbury. The student’s mother details that five days before starting his course, her son started to talk about cryptocurrencies with a friend from the school. “They were just having lads’ talk. [Then] the conversation turned to [finance] and the friend started talking about cyber currency,” the student’s mother explained. After the discussion, the boy’s friend alleges that the student brought eight friends from East London to visit the student’s room and he instantly “knew he was in trouble,” his mother declared. The student says that his bitcoin stash was worth around £6,000 ($8.2K) at the time he was robbed. But now that same stash of bitcoin is worth £68K ($93,000) and the gang of thugs stole £3,000 worth of his school grant money. The student then called the police and ran to the security hut and the student’s mother said the security guards didn’t go to the crime scene. The police never arrived because there were more important matters to attend to that evening. The student’s mother stressed: The only action the university took was moving him to different accommodation. He was too traumatised so he moved back home even though he had safer and better accommodation. Police Dropped the Case 8 Months Later, Mother Warns of London’s ‘Freshers’ Fishing Week’ To make matters worse, the money was never returned to the student. The Canterbury District Police Department dropped the case after eight months. The mother detailed that she was upset that the Kent security guards and police did nothing. She also warned other freshmen students that the same could happen to them. “The police commonly call Freshers’ Week ‘fishing week’ because all the criminals come down,” she said. “They know the students have got grants, laptops, and new stuff. Attacks, assaults, and muggings are quite common across the country,” the student’s mother added. The fact of the matter is, it is not wise to disclose crypto asset holdings to others, unless you truly trust them. Bitcoin muggings have been taking place for years, but there’s been an increase in crypto robberies that leverage violence to steal bitcoin or other digital assets, since the crypto economy’s massive rise in value during the latter half of 2020.
  19. Authorities in Abkhazia have confiscated thousands of mining machines, closing down all large crypto farms, yet they have admittedly failed to put an end to illegal mining operations. The breakaway republic of Georgia has been struggling with power shortages blamed on underground miners. 30,000 Rigs Remain in the Hands of Miners, Government Says In recent years, a growing number of people in Abkhazia, a partially-recognized de facto state in the South Caucasus, have turned to cryptocurrency mining as an alternative income source. However, the government of the Russia-backed republic has targeted the energy-intensive process as a major cause of the territory’s growing electricity deficit. A temporary ban on mining activities and hardware imports was introduced back in 2018 and extended this spring until March 31, 2022. But officials in Sukhumi have recently admitted their efforts to impose the restrictions throughout the region have largely proved unsuccessful. At a press conference this week, President Aslan Bzhania revealed that Abkhaz authorities have seized 6,000 units of coin minting equipment that are currently stored in a “special warehouse.” Quoted by Sputnik-Abkhazia, he noted that practically all large crypto farms have been shut down. Nevertheless, government estimates suggest that around 30,000 mining devices remain in the hands of people who build their business around the currently illegal activity. Power engineer Pavel Maksimov told Sputnik that the main reasons why the ban on crypto mining is not being implemented properly have to do with difficulties in exerting control over unauthorized miners. Inspectors are rarely able to get in contact with them and then they are often dragged into conflicts, Maksimov explained. He also warned that when connecting to the power grid illegally, the operators of the underground farms are not protected in any way, legally or financially. Crackdown on Crypto Mining in Abkhazia to Continue Members of the central government, local authorities, and representatives of the republic’s power utility met recently to discuss these issues on a request from President Bzhania. During the meeting in Sukhumi, the officials concluded that their offensive against illegal cryptocurrency mining hasn’t radically changed the situation in Abkhazia. Akhra Gagulia, head of the Gudauta branch of the region’s state-owned power distribution company, Chernomorenergo, announced that the joint raids with law enforcement agencies will continue but stressed the task requires a lot of work and constant monitoring. He also warned that the effort to prevent illegal connections of mining facilities to the grid is an endless one. Earlier this year, reports came out that Abkhazia was holding talks with Russia to solve the problem with its electricity shortages. The Minister of Economy Christina Ozgan said at the time that Abkhaz authorities plan to organize additional supplies from the Russian Federation and even set up facilities where miners can install their equipment as the government wants crypto farms to be legally connected to the grid.

  21. If you've been relying on Google Drive for your cloud storage, you probably received warning notices and emails when you hit 95% capacity. Google doesn't want you to run out of space – they want you to pay for more. But in truth, 15GB of space for emails, photos, and document-centric cloud storage should be more than enough. If you don't want to pay for Google One and extend the capacity of your cloud, you need to manage the data on your Google Drive more efficiently. When Google Drive is reaching the limit, use these tips and tricks to reduce data in your cloud and avoid upgrading to Google One. What Filetypes Take Up Space on Google Drive? Various filetypes will contribute to the 15GB limit of your Google Drive. But some don't. So, how do you tell them apart? Emails: Your Gmail account messages and attachments are stretching your storage. Inbox Zero and other email management techniques can help here. Photos and videos: If you use the Google Photos sync feature, your new snaps and videos will be synced with Google Drive. This has two settings, High Quality and Original, with the second option contributing to more storage space being used. Documents: Word documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs, video files, ZIP archives, and anything you've downloaded shared to you from other Google Drives contribute to your data use. Backups: Any data from Google Drive backed up with Google Takeout is stored as a ZIP file. Also backups and other files from your Android phone might be automatically synced with Google Drive, taking up space you didn't know about. However, note that Google Documents (Docs, Sheets, and Slides) files do not count towards the storage limit. Furthermore, items you have shared with other people count toward your storage, not theirs. 5 Steps to Maximize Your 15GB of Google Drive Storage There is no reason why you should run out of space in Google Drive. Fortunately, you don't have to. With sensible data management, you can make the most of your space using these methods: Delete old emails from Gmail Delete photos and videos in Google Photos Remove documents from Google Drive Empty trash Delete Android app data You will also need to put some time aside to deal with moving and deleting data from your Google Drive. However, following these steps (based on web interfaces, but you'll find similar options in the mobile apps) will save you from having to upgrade to Google One. Let's look at them in more depth. RELATED:Memory Sizes Explained 1. Delete Old Emails From Gmail Deleting files at mail.google.com is the easiest fix for a full Google Drive. Start with the saved Drafts, Spam, and Trash folders, and delete the contents. Once this is done, take the time to examine emails with attachments. You can find these using the search bar, by entering has:attachment. From here, you can use filters to select a date range, focus on PDFs and archives, and various other options. Use these to help you find the files that are contributing to your Google Drive getting too full. Do you really need emails from before 2015? Probably not. You might even have good reason to delete messages up until the past few months. Whatever works for you. 2. Delete Unwanted Photos and Videos in Google Photos While you might find some images in the Google Drive interface, if you sync photos and videos from your phone or PC, they'll be stored at photos.google.com. Here, you'll find photos arranged along a timeline that you can jump back and forth through on the right-hand side. Before you start deleting things, however, why not change the quality settings? Click Settings Look for Upload size for photos & videos Select Storage Saver Doing so will reduce the quality of the images from the original to high quality (essentially HD) READ MORE:What Is High Quality Storage In Google Photos? While in this screen, scroll to Unsupported Videos and click View. This lists corrupt videos (perhaps uploaded from Android) and movie files that are incompatible with Google Drive's browser-based media player. They can be discarded by: Checking the box (or clicking Select all) Clicking the trashcan, labelled Permanently Delete When asked, click Delete to confirm You can also download the files to check them but would still need to delete from Google Drive later. They're essentially dead space, of no real purpose on to Google Drive, or to you. To manually delete photos and videos in Google Photos: Scroll through the images Click the top left check box in any image you would discard When ready, click the Trash button Confirm with Move to trash Manually deleting images can be considerably time consuming. Photos of documents and screenshots made on Android can end up in the Google Photos Archive. This can't be accessed in the main interface, but nevertheless takes up space on Google Drive. Images in here must be manually deleted, although if they're in an archive, you probably have good reason to keep them. Finally, click the Trash button to check any deleted photos and videos taking up space on your cloud. These are automatically deleted after 60 days, but if any are hanging around you can simply click Empty trash. You can also delete blurry photos automatically using the Google Photos app. 3. Remove Old, Unnecessary Documents in Google Drive Using the Search in Drive box at the top of the web interface, you can search for PDFs, Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Photos & images, and Videos. (These last two filters will return items from Google Photos). Clicking individual items will display (in the Details pane) the file size and modification date. Use this information to determine if the file can be safely deleted. You can also click Settings > Settings > General to check the current storage status and View items taking up storage to see the main culprits. If these can be deleted, do so, by selecting individually or in bulk, and clicking Remove. You may prefer to download them to your computer first, however. 4. Empty the Google Drive Trash Like Google Photos, Google Drive has a trash can. Files you delete end up here and are automatically deleted fully after 30 days. If you're desperate to make more space on Google Drive, emptying trash is a smart option. Further, anything you've deleted so far might have ended up here. To empty the Google Drive Trash, simply click Empty trash. 5. Delete Android App Data All manner of Android app data can be found in Google Drive, taking up space that you didn't know about. To find out what is going on, click Settings > Settings > Manage Apps. Here, you'll find information about which apps are dumping data in Google Drive, and to what extent. In this example, you can see 54MB is taken up by "HTC Services" – I had an HTC phone some years ago until around 2015. This space can be returned by clicking Options > Delete Hidden app data > Delete. Repeat for any other apps or services listed that you no longer use or need that are taking up too much space. What Happens When You Run Out of Google Drive Space? By now, you should have a good chunk of Google Drive cleared, ready to use for more emails, files, and photos. But if you didn't follow the steps above, what would happen to your Google Drive? Well, you have two choices: start deleting data, or pay to keep using it. Google doesn't prevent access to Google Drive, but it does stop you from uploading to it. The only solution to keep using Google Drive for free is to delete data. As noted above, however, don't delete anything important without ensuring you have a copy of it. Google One is $15.99 a year for 100GB of storage, with the first month free. You can also get 200GB for $24.99 a year. Ultimately, it's inexpensive, but it's also an outlay that you don't really need to have. Act as soon as the alerts start to appear and you can keep that money for more important things. Manage Your Google Drive and Don't Run Out of Space 15GB of storage space may seem trivial by the standards of your computer or even your phone's storage, but it is very useful to have. More importantly, knowing how much you have squeezed into 15GBs of cloud storage should give you a better appreciate of what file types take up the most and least space. You now know how to maximize your Google Drive storage. Don't get drawn into paying for Google One – just delete some emails, unwanted old photos, and pointless documents instead.
  22. If you're anything like us, you might struggle to work productively on your phone or tablet. Is it all in our heads, or does the feeling of a mouse and keyboard somehow put us right into the zone? The vast majority of Android devices use your finger as the primary input method. It is such a drawback; using your digits to control your devices simply isn't as fluid as using a mouse and keyboard. Wouldn't it be great if you could use your computer's input devices on your phone or tablet? The good news is that you can. Here's how to control your Android device using your computer's mouse and keyboard. Download DeskDock to Control Android With a Mouse To follow this tutorial, you'll need to use an app called DeskDock. We'll discuss another approach for how to use a keyboard and mouse for Android later on, but using DeskDock is the fastest, easiest, and most reliable approach to connect an Android, mouse, and keyboard. DeskDock offers both a Free and a Pro version. The Pro version is available as a separate download. Download: DeskDock (Free) | DeskDock Pro ($5.49) What Features Does DeskDock Offer? DeskDock essentially turns your Android's screen into a second monitor, allowing you to move your mouse onto your device by moving it over your computer screen's boundary. As you'd expect, more features are available in the Pro version than the Free version. For example, the Free version only offers the ability to share your mouse with Android. If you want to use your laptop's keyboard and mouse on Android, you'll need to go Pro. If you're planning to use the app a lot, the Pro version is well worth the investment. However, we recommend testing the Free version first to ensure that it meets your needs. Some of the best features of the Free version of DeskDock include: Shared clipboards: You can easily copy and paste data between your PC and your device. Multitouch support: The app provides shortcuts that can simulate multitouch gestures on your device, meaning you'll never need to physically touch your phone while the app is active. Multi-device support: If you've got several Android devices, you can hook them all up to one instance of the app and use them at the same time. Customizable Android mouse settings: You can choose what action you want to associate with either a left- or right-click. As mentioned, the Pro version introduces shared keyboards. It also lets you map up to 10 mouse buttons, offers drag-and-drop support, and has keyboard shortcuts for your phone's power, volume, and screen brightness. The Pro version is also ad-free. As well as installing the app on your phone or tablet, you'll also need to install the app's server on your computer. The server has versions available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Lastly, unlike some of the other alternatives available in the Play Store, DeskDock does not require root access. How to Set Up DeskDock Let's take a look at how to install DeskDock and get it up and running on your machine. Set Up the DeskDock Server: Java and USB Debugging Before you install the app on your device, you first need to install the server on your machine. This is the most complicated part of connecting your Android, mouse, and keyboard, so please bear with us. The server needs Java Runtime Environment 1.7 or higher to run. If it's not already on your computer, head to the Java website to download and follow the on-screen installation instructions. Next, you need to enable USB debugging on your phone or tablet. The option is tucked away in the hidden Developer options menu. To activate the Developer options menu, head to Settings > About Phone and tap on the Build number field seven times. Image Gallery (2 Images) Once your device confirms Developer Mode is enabled, go to Settings > System > Developer options > Debugging > USB debugging and make sure the toggle is turned on. Tap OK when you see the on-screen confirmation. RELATED:Essential Productivity Apps For Working Remotely Connect Your Device Next, you'll need to connect your Android device to your computer using a USB cable. In most cases, your usual charging cable will suffice. Connecting your device via USB should prompt your computer to automatically install your device's ADB drivers. If you're unlucky and only the MTP drivers (or no drivers at all) are installed, you'll need to find and install them manually. There are far too many Android devices for us to list all of the downloads here. A simple Google search should provide what you're looking for. If you struggle to find the right file, trying visiting the Android Developer website. If still can't find the right drivers, contact your manufacturer's customer support line directly. Mac users do not need to install any drivers. Finally, you need to download DeskDock's server software using the link below. Make sure you download the version that matches your operating system. The server is a standalone app; you don't need to install any files on your system to use it. If the server launches successfully, you'll see an icon in your system tray. Right-click on the app to customize its settings. Download: DeskDock Server (Free) How to Install the DeskDock Android App Use the download links provided earlier to install the DeskDock Android app on your device. If you set up the server correctly, all that you need to do is attach your phone to your computer via USB. The app should automatically locate the server and make the connection. If the app and server cannot establish a connection, it's likely you don't have the right drivers installed. Revisit the previous section and verify that you're running your device's ADB drivers rather than the MTP drivers. Anyone running Android 8 Oreo or later will need to enable DeskDock as an Accessibility Service (go to Settings > Accessibility > Downloaded Services > DeskDock and slide the toggle next to Use service into the On position). Doing so allows the Android mouse cursor to display over the top of other apps. Pre-Oreo operating systems do not need to complete this step. 23. Sometimes, it's hard to believe how quickly technology is advancing. It seems like yesterday AMD introduced us to their Ryzen 3000 series of CPUs, which came with PCI Express 4.0 as one of its headlining features. Intel only caught up with its Rocket Lake CPUs, launched in 2021. However, it seems like the industry is yet again ready to move forward. Alder Lake 12th gen Intel CPUs are rumored to come with PCI Express 5.0, the new version of the spec. You may just have gotten a new flaming PC with support for PCIe 4.0. Thus, the question arises: what are the differences between PCIe 5.0 and the existing versions? And should I care? PCIe 5.0 vs. PCIe 4.0: Double the Bandwidth For the most part, the biggest improvement between different generations of PCI Express is always an increase in bandwidth of almost exactly double. The transfer rate of the first version of the standard, PCIe 1.0, was around 250 MB/s over a single lane (x1) and was capable of 2.5 GT/s (gigatransfers). With the arrival of PCIe 2.0, it was doubled to 500 MB/s and 5 GT/s, respectively. With PCIe 4.0, it increased to 1.97 GB/s and 16 GT/s, doubling from PCIe 3.0's 985 MB/s and 8 GT/s. I'm sure you get the drill by now—each new generation doubles the bandwidth of its predecessor or gets close to doubling it. PCIe 5.0 isn't an exception. PCIe 5.0 is the direct successor of the PCIe 4.0 standard. And yet again, the bandwidth and gigatransfer rate double over the previous generation, allowing data to be transferred at significantly faster speeds. 32 gigatransfers per second, or 32 GT/s, and a 3.94 GB/s transfer rate are all on the table. PCIe 4.0 was already crazy fast: you just need to look at a PCIe 4.0-capable NVMe SSD and the kinds of read/write speeds it can achieve. PCIe 5.0 will be twice as fast over the same number of lanes. RELATED:The Best Budget PCIe 4.0 Motherboards Of course, doubling speeds is easier said than done. While the physical connection remains the same, and PCIe 5.0 will remain fully backward compatible with previous PCI Express generations, its requirements will change to accommodate the higher speed. For example, motherboards supporting PCIe 5 will need to add greater capabilities under the hood for handling signal loss and noise. This is because going faster may encounter more signal integrity (SI) issues, and that needs to be accounted for to keep errors at bay as much as possible. The following version of PCI Express, PCIe 6.0, which is already in development (as you probably guessed by now, the PCI-SIG consortium moves fast), will be helped out in terms of bandwidth increase and signal integrity by using PAM-4 signaling. PCIe 5.0, however, will need to use more conventional methods to make space for these higher speeds: better quality motherboard traces and thicker PCBs with more layers to minimize signal loss and impedance. Why Should I Care About PCI Express 5.0? Things like our graphics cards don't really need the obscene amounts of bandwidth PCIe 5.0 delivers, at least not right now. After all, not even the biggest and most powerful from NVIDIA's current lineup, the RTX 3090, manages to saturate a PCIe 4.0 x16 connection fully. However, there are many use cases where PCIe 5.0 might come in handy, both for consumer use cases and more professional ones. Devices that can benefit from having more bandwidth will be able to make use of it properly, while others that don't really need more speed can instead work more efficiently using fewer lanes. On the consumer side, the main benefit of PCIe 5.0 is high-speed storage. On the storage side, NVMe drives with PCIe 5.0 speeds will be blazing fast. For example, Samsung's 980 Pro, often considered the gold tier of PCIe 4.0 drives, can reach sequential read speeds of up to 6,900 megabytes per second. A drive with PCIe 5.0 speeds could potentially reach twice that. High-speed storage is more important than ever, with things like Microsoft's DirectStorage promising to improve our gaming experience greatly. So, while PCIe 5.0 is not absolutely essential right now, it's likely that it'll come in handy in the future. PCIe 5.0 will also become very important in data centers, as fast storage and high-speed networking are essential for communication. Some server network interfaces are looking into a transition from 100 GbE networking to 400 GbE in the not-so-distant future, and PCIe 5.0 will make it achievable. The full-duplex bandwidth of a PCIe 5.0 x16 link is 128 GB/s. A full-duplex 400 GbE link necessitates 800 Gbps of bandwidth. In bytes, this translates to 100 GB/s of aggregate bandwidth, which a PCIe 5.0 x16 connection can handle. When Is PCIe 5.0 Coming? The standard has already been released. The final PCI Express 5.0 specification was released on May 29, 2019, while Jiangsu Huacun showed the first PCIe 5.0 controller in November 2019. However, we're yet to see it in any finalized products so far. The latest CPUs from Intel and AMD, Rocket Lake and Zen 3 respectively, are currently only PCIe 4.0 compatible, as are most PCI Express peripherals currently on the market, whether graphics card or NVMe SSD. RELATED:PCIe Vs. SATA SSDs: Which Storage Drive Is Best? However, they're coming soon. We expect Intel's 12th gen CPUs, codenamed Alder Lake, to bring PCIe 5.0 support to desktop computers, and those should be released to the market by the beginning of 2022. Alder Lake will also launch with a new socket, DDR5 RAM support, and new motherboard chipsets. As for AMD, while new CPUs are soon to launch with a new AM5 socket, those aren't expected to come with PCIe 5.0 support right out of the gate. Instead, it might be a couple of generations before AMD gets on the action. Blazing Fast Storage, Networking, and Graphics PCI Express 5.0 will be one of the hottest new things to arrive at the computer ecosystem. With double the transfer rate and bandwidth from PCIe 4.0 and four times the transfer rate of PCIe 3.0, it's a generational leap that will impact how we use our PCs and allow for mind-bending SSD and networking speeds and make things that weren't possible before a reality.
  24. The Terminal app is the gateway for command-line access in macOS. If you frequently find yourself working inside Terminal and want to play an audio file, there's no need to leave the app. There are commands that you can use to not only play audio files directly from inside Terminal, but to convert audio files as well. How to Play an Audio File in Terminal First, launch the Terminal app on your Mac from Applications > Utilities or from Spotlight. To play an audio file from inside Terminal, run the afplay command followed by the path of the audio file you want to play. For example: afplay /Users/itechno8/Downloads/file.wav (To get the file path for any file, simply select the file in Finder and press Cmd + Option + C to copy it to your keyboard.) Once a song starts, you can stop the afplay command by pressing Control + C. You can also choose to close the Terminal window after starting a song; this will keep the song playing in the background, but you need to change the command you use. To do this, add & disown after the path to the audio file: afplay /Users/itechno8/Downloads/file.wav & disown Once you close the window, you might get a warning that closing Terminal will terminate the afplay process. Select Terminate and the window will close. You'll find that the song will keep playing nevertheless. RELATED:The Mac Terminal Commands Cheat Sheet If you want to stop the audio playing after you've closed the window, you'll need to open up Terminal again and run a killall command to stop it: killall afplay How to Get Information About an Audio File in Terminal You can use the afinfo command in Terminal to get specific information about an audio file. Simply type the command followed by the path of the audio file. For example: afinfo /Users/itechno8/Downloads/file.wav How to Convert Audio Files in Terminal Audio files can also be converted from one format to another from within Terminal. The afconvert command allows you to do this. They are many complicated uses of this command, but we'll be focusing on simply converting one audio file format to another. RELATED:Fun And Cool Mac Terminal Commands To Try To do this the easy way, open up the folder which contains the file you want to convert. Control-click on the main folder and select New Terminal at Folder. The general format for the afconvert command is as follows: afconvert -f FORMAT -d CODEC SOURCEFILE [-o DESTINATIONFILE] It is necessary to specify both the file format and the codec. Otherwise, an error will appear. If you omit the -o option, afconvert will automatically pick a name and extension based on the other inputs. An example of this command in use is as follows: afconvert -f M4AF -d LEI32 Original.wav [-o Converted.mp4] This converted my WAV file "Original.wav" into an MP4 file "Converted.mp4". It's important to note that macOS does not ship with an MP3 encoder by default, and hence you might face some difficulties while converting mp3 files from the Terminal window without a third-party encoder. To get a list of the supported formats, use the following command: afconvert -hf For more help with the afconvert command, try running this: afconvert -h Possible Uses for the Commands There are many uses for the commands explained above. You can use the afconvert command to automate the process of converting multiple files or you can use SSH to access your Mac from another Mac and use Terminal play some audio through the speakers. To astonish a coworker, perhaps?
  25. For a person unfamiliar with coding, it's easy to get scared after accidentally opening Inspect Element. However, if you stay calm after viewing the complicated code, Inspect Element lets you perform a bunch of useful (and some not-so-useful) things, provided you know how to do it. Here, we'll look at seven fun things you can do using your browser’s developer tools and Inspect Element. What Is Inspect Element? Inspect Element is a developer tool offered by browsers to view and temporarily change the source code of any webpage. By using this tool, developers and designers can check and modify the front-end of any website. As you change the code, the browser keeps updating the webpage in real-time. This change lasts only as long as your session on the website and is visible only to you on the one device. All changes will be removed as soon as you leave the webpage. 1. Download Images and Videos Usually, you can easily download photos from the web by right-clicking and saving them. But you can’t do that on all websites. In this case, Inspect Element feature comes in handy. To download any media file, right-click on it and choose Inspect. Expand the <div> tags. Now, you can view the source of the file through the src attribute. Copy the link of the source and open it on a new tab. Then, right-click the media file and download it using the Save As option. RELATED:How To Download Embedded Flash Videos And Music With A Browser 2. Change Headers and Text to Prank Friends Instead of creating a fake image from the scratch, you can use DevTools to change the text on the webpage and pull pranks on your friends. To make a fake webpage, open any reputed website’s page and right-click on its title. Then, click on Inspect to open the pane. Click on the More icon of the highlighted code and choose Edit as HTML. Then replace the title with your own fake headline. Similarly, you can change other bodies of text like the excerpt, date, and author name. To change the image, remove the image source using the same steps. Then find a related image from Google, copy its image address, and paste it in the source. This way, you can pull a prank on your friends without much trouble. However, make sure to send the screenshot with the DevTools pane hidden instead of a link, as the change is temporary. 3. Change the Colors and Font of a Webpage Another sneaky thing you can do using Inspect Element is to change the colors and font of any webpage. Right-click on the object whose colors you want to change and choose Inspect. Then in the Styles tab, find color or background color and enter the hex code. Similarly, you can change font size and style from the Styles tab. You can use this trick to change the appearance of any website and make it easy to read. For example, you can create a dark mode of any website, increase the font size to increase readability, and remove obtrusive elements by deleting them. RELATED:How To Find A Webpage's Font Using The Inspect Element Tool And Browser Extensions 4. View Hidden Passwords If any website has hidden your password by asterisks, you can tweak the webpage code to view it. Go to the DevTools by right-clicking the hidden password. Then within the input tag, change the type from password to text and click on the blank screen. Now, your password is visible. This trick comes in handy when you forget your password but have it saved on a password manager. So, you can view and remember your password directly from the webpage. 5. View the Mobile Version of a Website We all know how to view the desktop site on your mobile phone. But you can also use Inspect Element to view the mobile version on the desktop. To do so, open DevTools and click on the Toggle Device Toolbar button (second button from top right). Similarly, you can switch user agents and view different versions of the website. In the developer tools, click on the More icon in the top-left corner and choose network conditions. Uncheck the Use Default Browser box in the User Agent section and choose any other user agent from the drop-down menu below. 6. Pick Colors From a Website Instead of installing a third-party color picker extension, you can now pick your favorite colors using Inspect Element. To pick any color from the web page, go to Inspect Element. Then, go to the Styles tab and find color or background. Now, click on the small box after color to bring up the color picker. Now you can click anywhere on the page to pick the color and copy the hex code from the Styles tab. If you want RGB or HSLA code, you can view them using the Arrow buttons. So, whenever you see a great color on any website that you might want to use in the future, simply use Inspect Element and save the code for reference. RELATED:How To Enable "Inspect Element" And "View Source" In Edge 7. Take Screenshots Without Any Extensions DevTools also allows you to take clean and clear screenshots. To take a screenshot, open DevTools, click on the More icon, and choose Run a Command. In the search box, type screenshot. You’ll see four different types of screenshot-capturing options. By choosing an area screenshot, you can highlight any particular area on the window, and your browser saves it as a PNG file. Capturing a full-size screenshot saves an image of the entire webpage, including things that aren’t visible on your screen. A node screenshot captures an image of the particular element only. Lastly, the capture screenshot option saves the image of everything visible on your screen. Learn the Hidden Tricks of Inspect Element These were just a few tricks that you can perform using Inspect Element. There are tons of other useful things you can do using DevTools. So if you want to become a power user and impress your friends, it’s a good idea to learn the more hidden features of DevTools.
