  1. The judge confirmed that neither the victim nor Joe Clarke had done anything wrong. © Getty Former Worcestershire player Alex Hepburn has been sentenced to five years in jail for raping a woman in April 2017. The 23-year-old was sacked by his county club last year. When sentencing Hepburn, Judge Jim Tindal said: "It emerged in the trial you and Joe Clarke had agreed a pathetic, sexist game to collect as many sexual encounters as possible. You probably thought it was laddish behaviour at the time. In truth it was foul sexism. It demeaned women and trivialised rape - a word you personally threw around lightly. Only now do you realise how serious rape is. "You thought you were God's gift to women. You did see her at that moment as a piece of meat, not a woman entitled to respect. You scarred both your lives forever." Hepburn and Clarke were both involved in a sexual conquest game which involved seeing how many women they could sleep with, bragging about it on Whatsapp. Clarke and the woman had had consensual sex earlier in the evening before she was raped by Hepburn with the Judge confirming neither the woman, nor Clarke, had done anything wrong. "I mourn who I used to be," the woman's victim impact statement read. "I can't remember the last time I went anywhere without creating mental escape plans, just in case." She described the ordeal as "evil" and a "heinous crime" which has left her suffering post-traumatic stress disorder. Following the sentencing, DCI Ian Wall of West Mercia police said: "We welcome the sentence today and I hope it will offer some comfort to the victim, who has shown great courage and strength in coming forward in reporting this to us, throughout the investigation and in giving evidence in court."
  2. Cooke's belligerent knock helped Glamorgan to victory © Getty Gloucestershire vs Glamorgan, Bristol Glamorgan thumped Gloucestershire by a big margin of 74 runs in the South group clash on Tuesday at Bristol. After electing to bat first, the visitors posted a huge score of 331 - a total that was sufficient to give them a comfortable win. The first hour of the match belonged to the home team as they claimed three early wickets but they would have hardly anticipated what followed next as Chris Cooke played a scintillating knock of 161(127) to rip apart Gloucestershire's bowling attack. Billy Root walked out to bat in the 13th over and it was the fourth wicket partnership between him and Cooke that changed the momentum in the visiting team's favour. The pair stitched a 234-run stand and took the game away from Gloucestershire - a blow the hosts could never recover from. With a mountain to climb in the second innings, the chasing team absolutely succumbed under the scoreboard pressure and lost a flurry of wickets at the top. Jack Taylor in the later stages played a brave knock of 75 but after the kind of start the team got off to, it was never going to be easy to chase the target down. South African pacer Marchant de Lange was the wrecker-in-chief as he bagged three crucial wickets as the opposition was eventually bundled out for 257. Brief scores: Glamorgan 331/7 in 50 overs (Cooke 161, Root 98; Howell 3/83) beat Gloucestershire 257 in 48.3 overs (Taylor 75, van Buuren 41, de Lange 3/44) by 74 runs. Surrey vs Hampshire, The Oval On a good batting wicket in Oval, Surrey's decision to bowl first backfired as Hampshire posted a total in excess of 300 - a score that proved to be more than enough on the day for the visitors. Surrey got an early breakthrough in the form of opener Tom Alsop who was dismissed for a duck. But Aiden Markram's innings of 88 negated the early loss as Hampshire recovered quickly and soon after it was the Dawson show that took over. Liam Dawson went on to score a superb century that came at a strike rate of 116 and as a result of his knock Hampshire finished with 307 in the first innings. In reply, openers Mark Stoneman and Will Jacks got Hampshire off to a decent start with the former notching up a 68-ball 70 but after his dismissal things went haywire for Surrey as wickets kept tumbling regularly and they fell short of the target by 53 runs. Kyle Abbott claimed three wickets while Dawson bagged two wickets in addition to his century. It was a perfect all-round performance by him and the prime reason behind Hampshire's comfortable victory. Brief scores: Hampshire 307 in 49.2 overs (Dawson 108, Markram 88, McKerr 3/59) beat Surrey 254 in 46.2 overs (Stoneman 70, Burns 38; Abbott 3/58) by 53 runs. Essex vs Sussex, Chelmsford Sussex pulled off a thriller against Essex as they won by 1 wicket in a last-over finish at Chelmsford on Tuesday. Having elected to bat first, Essex posted 283 as all their top order batsmen chipped in with handy contributions. Varun Chopra and Alastair Cook gave a decent start with a 73-run opening stand while Westley and Lawrence who batted at number 3 and number 4 respectively scored fifties. For Sussex, David Wiese was the top wicket taker of the innings with 3 wickets. Sussex didn't have a great start during the chase as they lost opener Salt early but Wright and Garton had a decent partnership for the second wicket and led their recovery. Matt Coles of Essex kept chipping wickets at regular intervals but Laurie Evans and Will Beer had different ideas. Their 121-run stand for the seventh wicket proved to pivotal but after their departure it was Danny Briggs who took charge. Briggs played a decisive knock of 37 that came at a strike rate of 142 and his nerves of steel in death overs helped Sussex get over the line with a ball to spare. Brief scores: Sussex 287/9 in 49.5 overs (Beer 75, Evans 68; Coles 3/72) beat Essex 283/7 in 50 overs (Westley 61, Lawrence 54; Wiese 3/54) by 1 wicket.

  5. GameStop is joining Sony and Microsoft as yet another retailer willing to accept Cyberpunk 2077 returns, even if the game has been opened, according to reports from employees. Cyberpunk 2077 launched in a sorry state on consoles, particularly with regards to the base PS4 and Xbox One. As a result, CD Projekt RED quickly promised fans refunds - a promise the studio, in many respects, was in no position to make. Thus, drama and controversy ensued. Within a week of the RPG's arrival, Sony announced it would temporarily expand its refund policy for Cyberpunk 2077 alone. The platform holder additionally made the unprecedented decision to delist the title on PlayStation Store until further notice. Not too long thereafter, Microsoft extended its refund policy, too, before adding a warning about Cyberpunk 2077's poor performance on the Xbox Store. Retailers like Best Buy similarly altered its guidelines for returns, though only for a brief period of time. Reportedly, Kotaku obtained an internal GameStop memo, which instructs employees to accept returns of Cyberpunk 2077. Refunds will even be given for physical copies that customers previously opened, a move that directly contradicts GameStop's standard return policy. Customers who want to return the RPG must do so within 30 days of purchasing their copy. Upon completing the exchange, staffers must then label the game as "defective," before it's shipped to GameStop's warehouses. VICE's Patrick Klepek corroborated Kotaku's report, claiming that he, too, has seen the memo in question. Since the retailer has yet to publicly share details on the matter, it's unclear as to how long this change in policy will last. Labelling returned physical copies of the role-playing title as "defective" seems a tad out of left field. After all, performance issues aside, Cyberpunk 2077 still offers a fun experience in terms of content. But it's possible the label counts as little more than a formality, a simple way of documenting the unusual circumstance of GameStop's accepting the return of previously opened games. Again, since the retailer remains mum on the matter, the finer details are publicly known at present. CD Projekt RED is working to resolve Cyberpunk 2077's myriad issues on both console and PC. Version 1.05 recently went live, and two larger updates are scheduled to roll out in January and February. Even if these efforts usher in a higher quality experience, the studio has still lost much of its cachet. Not to mention, a lawsuit from CDPR investors may generate a whole host of new problems for the developer. Cyberpunk 2077 is available to purchase on Google Stadia, PC, and Xbox platforms. PlayStation users are still able to buy physical copies in stores.
  6. The big mark Steam has been building towards all year has been met: As of the morning of January 2nd, 2021, Steam's all-time peak concurrent connected user count broke the 25 million mark. To be precise, the high was 25,415,080 per the trackers over at SteamDB. It's a new high for a new year where clearly, more people than ever are playing PC games through the platform. However, much like last month's record, the users reporting as in-game didn't manage to crack the record set in the last week of March this year. Some 8.1 million players were in-game in March, while just 7.4 million were in games today. That said, today's goal continues the trend of Valves free-to-play games leading the way, with CS:GO reporting more than a million, per usual, while Dota 2 neared 700k and PUBG cleared 400k. Singleplayer games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Stardew Valley both contributed in the top 10 among perennially popular games like GTAV and Rust. With this barrier cracked, it seems like Steam's numerical exploits are becoming more "inevitability" than "news." I'll get back to you when Steam reaches something like 30 million players, or maybe when it cracks 10 million players online and in-game. With 2021 shaping up to be a year where people will stay indoors and work from home to be better safe than sorry, we might just get there sooner than we'd like.
  7. Shannon Loftis, studio head of World's Edge, has shared a year-end update on the state of Age of Empires in its various incarnations, including the fourth one which we last saw in November of 2019. "I don't want to make you jealous," she wrote, "but we are literally playing this game every single day—both in Washington and in Vancouver." So yes, Age of Empires 4 is in development and currently in a playable state. Which doesn't mean that it's close to release, of course. As Loftis went on to explain, "RTS development is funny: it takes a while to build the separate systems (AI, economy, sim, rendering, etc), and then it takes a while for them to come together. But when they do, you suddenly have a game—a game that needs debugging and balance and polish— but the core of the game that you know you're going to ship. And the best part is that it feels like an Age of Empires game." Age of Empires 4 is being made by Relic Entertainment, who have a lot to prove after Dawn of War 3. What little we've seen of it so far suggests it may cover multiple periods of history, and feature walls. I'm all about building walls in Age of Empires games, so that's a positive sign. The update also mentioned that the Lords of the West expansion for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition will be out soon. According to the Age of Empires website, it'll be on Steam, the Microsoft Store, and Game Pass for PC on January 26.
  8. It’s been a long time since we’ve heard about the mobile version of Apex Legends, but we’ll be seeing more of it very soon: EA announced that a regional beta for the game will kick off later this month. Initially, the publisher says the game will only be available to “a few thousand players in India and the Philippines,” but the plan is to roll it out to more countries over the course of the year. The company also provided some of the first details of the game. Most importantly, it won’t be a port of Apex Legends, but instead a new version built for smartphones. “Apex Legends Mobile is specially designed for touchscreens, with streamlined controls, and thoughtful optimizations that result in the most advanced battle royale combat available on a phone,” Apex Legends game director Chad Grenier wrote in a blog post. This also means it won’t feature any kind of crossplay or cross-progression. And like the PC and console version of the game, Apex Legends will be free on mobile. These kinds of mobile-exclusive spinoffs are becoming increasingly popular for big multiplayer games. Riot recently launched Wild Rift, a smartphone take on League of Legends, while Psyonix is doing something similar with Rocket League Sideswipe. PUBG Mobile, meanwhile, remains one of the most popular games in the world, recently surpassing 1 billion downloads. The main version of Apex Legends just hit a new milestone of 100 million players, and last month, the game expanded to the Nintendo Switch.
  9. Sony and Guerrilla Games’ PS4 hit Horizon Zero Dawn is now available, free of charge, to PS4 and PS5 owners. PlayStation owners on both consoles can redeem a free digital copy of the game until May 14th at 8PM PT / 11PM ET. The free copy Sony is offering is the Complete Edition, meaning you get not only the base game but some extras, including the Frozen Wilds expansion and a digital artbook. Unlike the PS Plus free games, which require an active subscription to the service, Sony is giving away the game for free, no strings attached. THE PROMOTION IS PART OF SONY’S PLAY AT HOME INITIATIVE Horizon Zero Dawn was originally released in 2017 as a PS4 exclusive. Players control a young hunter named Aloy who roams a post-apocalyptic world dominated by machines while searching for clues about her past. The game is also receiving a sequel titled Forbidden West, which is slated to launch sometime this year on the PS4 and PS5. The promotion is part of Sony’s “Play at Home” initiative, which aims to encourage PlayStation owners to stay home during the pandemic by incentivizing players with free games until June. Additionally, Sony is also giving away nine titles, including Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Enter the Gungeon for free until April 22nd at 8PM PT / 11PM ET.
  10. Alan Wake 2 may finally be happening thanks to a deal from Epic Games. Exact details of when it'll release, what it'll be about, and how it might connect to Control are scarce, but reputable insider and GamesBeat reporter Jeff Grubb has stated that he's heard that Epic's recent deal with developer Remedy included funding for the long-awaited sequel. Epic Games struck a deal with Remedy quite recently to help fund games in the Control universe, a new IP that the developer successfully got off the ground back in 2019. Many have been hoping for an Alan Wake sequel, but due to rights issues, lack of proper funding, and more, it's been an issue. Remedy used Control as a bit of a trojan horse for a continuation of the Alan Wake universe via in-game references and expansions. This only fueled the fire and thanks to Remedy proving itself more than capable yet again, it seems that at least one publisher is finally interested in bringing the game to life. Jeff Grubb reported on his latest Twitch stream that Epic has greenlit Alan Wake 2 following numerous offers from other publishers. Remedy had already confirmed plans to make more Control and Alan Wake games, but was vague on if that would just be Control 2 or something else entirely. According to Grubb, it seems to be the latter for at least one of its in-development games. "It should be the follow-up fans of that series want. There was a bidding war, but Epic had the best publishing deal, so Alan Wake 2 seems like it's coming," said Grubb. He went on to note that he has no idea what Remedy's plans are for a sequel to Control at the moment. Epic has been quite bullish on being developer-friendly for a while now. Thanks to its mountains of Fortnite money as well as revenue from the Epic Games Store, the studio has had plenty of cash to throw around. On top of helping Remedy fund its next few games, Epic has acquired noteworthy indie developers such as Rocket League developer Psyonix and Fall Guys developer Mediatonic. Whether or not the games from these developers will be PC exclusive via Epic Games is a bit of a mystery, but it seems somewhat unlikely. Alan Wake got its start on Xbox 360 and, given that it is more of a cult-classic than a blockbuster hit, relying on the PC audience to make a sequel a success seems unlikely. It seems far more reasonable for Epic Games to do some sort of timed-exclusivity for PC and bring Alan Wake 2 to consoles a few months later, but as of right now, nothing, not even the game itself, is confirmed.
  11. The Xbox team is expanding its already impressive backward compatibility options thanks to cloud gaming, as Game Pass Ultimate members can now play classic Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles on Android devices. Game Pass Ultimate continues to increase in value; needless to say, the cloud gaming beta has played a major part in such growth over the last several months. Xbox's xCloud streaming beta kicked off in the back half of last year, providing Game Pass Ultimate subscribers with access to their games across various devices. Better yet, the cloud aspect of the service comes at no extra cost to players. It's an ambitious initiative on Microsoft's part. Akin to Google Stadia, xCloud users don't download games onto their devices; instead, games are streamed from Microsoft servers, which have apparently put the Azure Cloud architecture to good use. The power of the Azure Cloud is now enabling Xbox's streaming service to further expand its horizons. An Xbox Wire post outlines the new features that Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can take advantage of thanks to the cloud. Starting today, members who own Android smartphones or tablets can stream 16 games from the original Xbox and Xbox 360 catalogues. More classic titles will join the service, but Xbox cloud gaming on Android currently supports the following: Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Double Dragon Neon, Fable II, Fallout: New Vegas, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War: Judgment, Jetpac Refuelled, Kameo, Perfect Dark, Perfect Dark Zero, The Elder Across III: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Viva Piñata, and Viva Piñata: TIP. Such a move has essentially turned mobile devices into retro gaming machines, courtesy of clouding gaming and backward compatibility. The timing of the announcement seems rather shrewd as well, given Sony's controversial decision to shutter the online storefronts for PSP, PS3, and PS Vita. PSP and PS3 stores are scheduled to close this coming July, while the Vita's storefront will limp along until late August. Strangely, of the big three console manufacturers, Microsoft seems the most interested in preserving its legacy titles. It's especially interesting when considering Nintendo and Sony both have stronger back catalogues in terms of quantity and quality. Here's to hoping the latter two companies take a note from Xbox's book and greatly expand upon existing backward compatibility options.
  12. According to Bungie's design director, the developers behind Destiny 2 and Halo are currently working on a new project coming sometime in 2025. Bungie has been developing the Destiny franchise since the first game released in 2014. Originally in conjunction with Activision, the developer separated from the publishing giant in 2019 to manage Destiny by itself. This move was lauded by fans in the community, who saw Activision’s influence as the cause for the litany of problems with Destiny 2. Since going independent, Bungie has revamped its approach to Destiny 2, eliminating the planned content for a Destiny 3 and shifting it toward the current game. Shadowkeep, the first expansion managed by Bungie independently, began what would become a shift in Destiny 2’s change from a stopgap in the series to the franchise’s future. The base game went free-to-play up to the content brought in by Forsaken, cross-saves were introduced with cross-play planned for late 2021, and a roadmap through 2024 was created. Bungie design director Jacob Benton was interviewed by Japanese site 4gamer about the company’s future. Transcribed by GamesRadar, Benton said that the team is currently working on a “new secret world in parallel with Destiny” set to release in 2025. Listings for Bungie indicate that the project will be more lighthearted than that of Destiny’s space epic atmosphere but is still in very early stages. The interview also reveals that another expansion for Destiny 2 is coming after the “Light and Darkness” arc ends but will not be saved for a Destiny 3. A Destiny movie was also teased as being on the table alongside other media set in the universe, but Benton couldn’t comment on those possibilities at the moment. The job listings for the new project indicate a lot of mechanics similar to those found in Destiny 2, like an in-game economy and a gear system. Furthermore, the company has trademarked the name Matter, which may be the title of the new IP, since it has similar descriptions to the job listings. The idea that Bungie is ready to manage not one, but two games as a service on a massive scale may seem a bit farfetched. However, Bungie has 900 employees at its disposal and appears to have had 2025 planned as the start date for the new content for some time. Whatever Bungie has planned for the future, it appears that the vision for it is clear and exciting to all involved. With Destiny 2 continuing to add more content for players to enjoy and developers excited for what's coming next, fans should be ready for whatever the company has in store. Hopefully, everything comes together by 2025. Destiny 2 is available for download on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Stadia.
