Thor: Ragnarok Is Quentin Tarantino's Favorite MCU Movie

Legendary filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has revealed that Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok is his favorite of all the MCU movies. After bursting on the scene with Reservoir Dogs in 1992, Tarantino quickly ascended to become one of the world's pre-eminent auteurs. This year, the director will release his ninth film, the sprawling period epic Once Upon a Time In Hollywood.

In addition to being among the most exciting - and at times controversial - filmmakers in the world, Tarantino has also established himself as one of the most knowledgeable and sometimes quirky cinema curators around. Tarantino's films are themselves compendiums of cinematic references, to the extent where he is occasionally accused of stealing. The director is also well known for being an outspoken advocate of obscure cult films, and even made the entire movie Grindhouse (together with Robert Rodriguez) as a cinematic love letter to the trash movies of the '70s. Tarantino's latest, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, takes his love of movie lore to another level as it tells the story of a washed up actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his long-time stunt man (Brad Pitt) as they experience the massive cultural shift that took place in the industry - and indeed the country - in the pivotal year of 1969.

Though Tarantino is renowned for his love of off-beat old films, the director does also take time out to experience new mainstream movies. There are no movies more mainstream than the Marvel movies right now, and indeed Tarantino has found time in his schedule to catch up on them. Speaking to Empire Magazine (via ComicBookMovie.com), the director revealed which of the MCU's films is his favorite. And his choice frankly isn't that surprising:

"I haven't been keeping up to date with them for, I guess, the last four years. I think the only comic book movies I saw last year at theaters were Wonder Woman and Black Panther. But about a couple of weeks ago I started catching up with some of the Marvel movies so I could go see Endgame. I just finished Captain America: Civil War, so next up is Doctor Strange. Actually, the last one I saw was [Thor:] Ragnarok. I loved it. It was my favourite one of the series since The Avengers - drastically my favorite."

Thor: Ragnarok was of course not your typical MCU film, as it veered heavily into quirky humor thanks to writer-director Taika Waititi. That quirkiness no doubt is one of the main reasons Tarantino considers the film his favorite MCU movie. Of all the directors who've tackled Marvel movies, Waititi is arguably the closest thing to an auteur among them, so it's no surprise that noted auteur Tarantino would feel a special fondness for his work.

The big question now of course is, would Tarantino ever consider taking on the task of directing a Marvel movie himself? As amazing as a Tarantino-directed Marvel movie might be, it seems a very long shot that he would ever consider hooking up with Kevin Feige and company, given his love of full creative control. The MCU is a well oiled machine at this point, cranking out movies like Thor: Ragnarok with industrial efficiency, and Tarantino likely would not work well within such a restrictive set up. Then again, never say never.
