Denis Villeneuve is expanding Dune to the small screen as WarnerMedia gives a straight-to-series order for a TV show, Dune: The Sisterhood. Frank Herbert's sci-fi novels have previously been at the center of a few different live-action adaptations. David Lynch gave his take on the property in 1984, while Syfy then adapted the material in a limited fashion in 2000 and 2003. After over a decade on the shelf, acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve is bringing Dune to the big screen again next year.

The movie features an all-star cast of Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, and more. With an incredible group of actors and rich source material, Villeneuve and Warner Bros. have more extensive plans for the IP. Dune is currently envisioned as the beginning of a two-part big-screen story, with potential existing for other ideas to emerge - and now one has.

According to a report from THR, a Dune TV show is heading to WarnerMedia's untitled streaming service. The series revolves around the Bene Gesserit, a mysterious group of women who are powerful thanks to their mastery of the body and mind. Villeneuve is set to be an Executive Producer on the series and direct the pilot episode of Dune: The Sisterhood, which has been ordered straight-to-series. Jon Spaihts will also produce the series and serve as the primary writer for the show, after co-writing the Dune movie script.

The announcement of Dune: The Sisterhood doesn't explicitly state that it'll be set in the same universe as Villeneuve's new movie, but the collaboration between him and Spaihts likely indicates that this will be the case. If so, then The Sisterhood is the first real sign of a multi-media Dune universe coming in the future based on the source material. Connections between the movie and this new TV show could run deep, as Charlotte Rampling was cast for the film as Reverend Mother Mohiam, who's a member of the Bene Gesserit. Rampling could potentially make an appearance in the TV show to bridge the properties together, and she could be one of many depending on how much money WarnerMedia is willing to put into the series.

What many may now be wondering is when Dune: The Sisterhood will arrive, but that's unclear at this moment. Villeneuve will be tied up with the movie until next fall, and Spaihts still should have several episodes of writing ahead of him and the writer's team he'll likely recruit (hopefully with some female writers too). At this point, it's difficult to imagine the scripts being done and Villeneuve having time to shoot the pilot before late next year, meaning Dune: The Sisterhood may not debut until 2021. But, that's just a guess at this point, so hopefully, more news on when it'll come and any crossover with Dune will arrive sooner rather than later.
