Angel Has Fallen International Trailer: Gerard Butler Fights for FREEDOM

Lionsgate releases the Angel Has Fallen international trailer. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, the franchise film was preceded by Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen. All three action thrillers star Gerard Butler as Secret Service Agent Mike Banning.

Released in 2013, Olympus Has Fallen was directed by frequent Denzel Washington collaborator Antoine Fuqua. In the film, Butler’s character attempts to protect the U.S. President from a North Korea attack. Produced for $70 million, Olympus Has Fallen earned over $170 at the box office. For the 2016 sequel, London Has Fallen, Babak Najafi stepped in as director for a London-based storyline. The film received a smaller budget at $60 million, but surpassed $205 million in ticket sales. Two months after London Has Fallen released, a third installment was announced with Butler set to reprise his role and produce. Last month, the first official trailer for Angel Has Fallen released.

Now, Lionsgate released an international trailer for Angel Has Fallen. In comparison to the official clip, the new video is significantly more intense from beginning to end. Whereas the first trailer begins with a fishing sequence between Agent Banning and President Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman) - and is complemented by Buffalo Springfield’s 1966 single “For What It's Worth” - the new trailer begins with a 30-second introductory sequence that establishes the franchise context. From there, the plight of Butler’s character receives the most emphasis, as he’s seemingly set up and charged with attempting to murder the U.S. President. In contrast to the hero-themed official trailer, the international clip presents Agent Banning as a rogue character a la Jason Bourne, but one who’s more interested in clearing his name than finding revenge. While Butler isn’t necessarily known for being a versatile actor, his films do tend to make money at the box office. Marc Forster’s 2011 film Machine Gun Preacher teased Butler as a potential A-level leading man, but the massive box office flop slowed down the Scottish actor’s career. Since then, however, Butler has found a niche with a voice role as Stoick the Vast in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, and with a variety of actions films that are more popcorn thrillers than intellectually stimulating dramas. 

As an actor, Butler seems best suited for action thrillers rather than live-action comedies or romantic comedies. If his films continue to be financial successes, or at least most of them, Butler could potentially remain a relevant male lead into his 50s. Most likely, Butler will ultimately find that one special role, and perhaps reach the next level of his career with a film that balances big action with big, relatable drama. For now, he's right in his wheelhouse with Angel Has Fallen.
