A movie based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book series Oblivion Song is in the works at Universal. The Walking Dead and Outcast creator announced the supernatural sci-fi series in late 2017 and published its first issue in March 2018 under Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment. The series was co-created with artist Lorenzo De Felici who Kirkman had previously collaborated with on covers for issues of The Walking Dead and Invincible.

Set a decade after 300,000 citizens of Philadelphia suddenly vanished into an apocalyptic alternate dimension populated with mutant monsters, Oblivion Song follows Nathan Cole – a scientist who invents technology allowing interdimensional travel. After the government has long given up attempting to rescue citizens from Oblivion, Nathan makes daily trips into the hellish dimension to try and save any remaining survivors.

Though just 16 issues of Oblivion Song have been published so far, the series is already about to get the big screen treatment after Skybound Entertainment (which was co-founded by Kirkman) announced it was teaming with Universal to make a feature length film of the comics, according to THR. The adaptation will feature a script penned by Sean O’Keefe, whose other credits include the Mark Wahlberg fronted Netflix movie Wonderland and Gavin O’Connor’s forthcoming reboot of The Green Hornet. The movie will be produced by Skybound’s film division which includes Kirkman, Skybound’s co-founder David Alpert and brothers Bryan and Sean Furst. Universal’s EVP of Production Jon Mone and Director of Development Lexi Barta will oversee the film on behalf of their company.

Oblivion Song is the latest of Kirkman’s comics to be adapted for the screen. AMC’s adaptation of his Walking Dead comics – on which Kirkman serves as executive producer – will air its tenth season later this year. Meanwhile, Kirkman’s Invincible comics are being adapted into an animated series for Amazon set for release in 2020 and featuring a voice cast that includes former Walking Dead cast member Steve Yeun and Star Wars’ Mark Hamill.

Kirkman is also the co-creator and executive producer of The Walking Dead’s spin-off show Fear the Walking Dead which kicked off its fifth season earlier this month and recently launched another comic series DIE!DIE!DIE! in collaboration with former Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple. He’s also set to produce a remake of John Landis’s classic comedy horror An American Werewolf in London penned and directed by Landis’s son Max.
