Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Teaser Reveals First Look At Netflix Animated Series

DreamWorks TV releases a Fast & Furious: Spy Racers trailer teasing the upcoming animated Netflix TV show. The storyline will follow a teenage character named Tony Toretto, the cousin of Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto from the live-action franchise. Diesel will also executive produce the series.

In 2001, Universal released The Fast and the Furious, a crime action film written by Gary Scott Thompson, Erik Bergquist and David Ayer (Suicide Squad). The narrative features the late Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner, an undercover cop who tracks down a group of carjackers led by Diesel’s Dominic Toretto. Produced for $38 million, The Fast and the Furious earned over $207 million at the box office and spawned seven sequels, with two additional films set to continue the series. Later this summer, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham will reprise their franchise characters in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, a spinoff movie directed by David Leitch. A female-centric franchise spin-off is also in development, with Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet on board as screenwriters. 

Today, DreamWorks TV teased new projects at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, and debuted a trailer for the new animated Netflix series Fast & Furious: Spy Racers. The 27-second clip begins with quick edits and cuts to black, complemented by a booming score. Two vehicles race in what appears to be an urban Los Angeles setting, one that will undoubtedly be familiar to franchise fans. The racing itself is rather brief, but the clip highlights the fascinating animation and attention to detail, whether it’s the various shades of color in the sky or the cars flying through the empty landscape. The storyline for Fast & Furious: Spy Racers will parallel the plot for the live-action series. Tony Toretto and his friends are recruited by the government to infiltrate a racing league. The stakes are quite high, though, as the targeted team of racers serve as a front for criminals that are not only seeking power, but also seeking world domination. Alongside Diesel, Tim Hedrick (Voltron Legendary Defender) and Bret Haaland (All Hail King Julien) are set to executive produce Fast & Furious: Spy Racers and serve as showrunners. In addition, franchise screenwriter Chris Morgan wil also executive produce. The animated Netflix series is scheduled to premiere globally later in 2019.

As franchise fans await Fast and the Furious 9, along with Hobbs & Shaw, the Fast & Furious: Spy Racers teaser will ramp up the hype even more. Given the Toretto connection, there’s plenty of familial backstory to explore. Plus, the DreamWorks animation team will undoubtedly include some Easter eggs that will keep fans fully engaged with Fast & Furious: Spy Racers.
