Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Far From Home is looking at a $150 million opening over the six-day 4th of July weekend according to tracking data. Starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming was the first full outing for the webslinging superhero in the MCU (after his short debut appearance in Captain America: Civil War). The movie proved that audiences were more than ready to embrace the MCU’s version of Spider-Man as it went on to gross $880 million worldwide.

Holland’s Spider-Man of course returned in 2018 for the epic Avengers: Infinity War, and shockingly found himself falling victim along with half the universe to Thanos’ snap. But Spidey’s absence would not be a long one, as 2019’s even-more-epic Avengers: Endgame brought him and all the MCU’s fallen heroes back to life (while seeing Spidey’s mentor Tony Stark sacrifice himself to take out Thanos). Next month, Spider-Man is back for his first post-Endgame outing in Far From Home, which sees Peter Parker finding a new ally in Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) while doing battle against another massive threat in the all-powerful Elementals.

If the tracking data is correct, Spider-Man: Far From Home is set to be another yet huge hit for the MCU. As reported by THR, the movie is currently projected to make $150-160 million domestically when it bows at the box office over the long July 4th holiday.

If Far From Home indeed reaches those projections, it would easily surpass the opening weekend numbers for Homecoming, which did $117 million on its way to a $334 million domestic total. Far From Home in fact has a good chance to top the biggest opening weekend ever for the Spider-Man franchise, which came in 2007 when Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 bowed to $151 million. The original 2002 Spider-Man was the other movie in the franchise to top the $100 million mark in its opening weekend, with a tally of $114 million. Then 2004’s Spider-Man 2 fell short with $88 million, while 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 also just missed the mark with $91 million. But 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man is the one big outlier among live-action Spidey films with a bow of just $62 million. Of course, the franchise also includes the animated 2018 feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which opened to $35 million on its way to an impressive $190 million total.

The fact that Spider-Man: Far From Home is tracking to have a huge opening weekend should come as no surprise given the track record of the MCU at the box office. Of course, with Captain Marvel, Shazam! and Endgame coming out earlier this year, not to mention the just released Dark Phoenix, there was always a chance for superhero fatigue to set in and ding Far From Home at the box office. But all indications are that, despite seeming market saturation, audiences are still primed to flock to theaters for (some) superhero movies, or Spider-Man: Far From Home at least.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) release date: Jul 02, 2019
