New Knives Out Trailer Pays Homage to Classic Murder Mysteries

A brand new trailer for Rian Johnson's highly-anticipated whodunnit, Knives Out, pays homage to classic murder mysteries from the past. Johnson's latest is led with an all-star cast that includes Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Toni Collette, and Jamie Lee Curtis amongst a variety of other famous faces. Ever since its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film has been met with plenty of rave reviews and is currently sitting at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. With a little less than a week to go before its official release, critics have expressed that the film is truly one-of-a-kind. Led with masterful performances and a thrilling story, Knives Out has become a welcome surprise to debut among the many fall releases this year.

The story is a murder mystery in the style of a classic Agatha Christie novel. It centers on the dysfunctional Thrombey family as they gather to celebrate the birthday of their patriarch, Harlan (Christopher Plummer). But, after Harlan ends up dead, detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is then brought on to investigate what exactly happened to him, and each family member is a suspect as the film's plot unravels. Considering that many individuals who have seen the film have boasted that half the joy of watching it comes from the unexpected twist, Johnson has urged some fans to avoid some of the trailers for fear of spoilers. Thankfully, a new trailer has come out that avoids any major story details while also paying homage to classic murder mysteries that inspired the film.

Lionsgate released the latest trailer for Knives Out, which opens with Johnson introducing his new film. The black-and-white color scheme, along with the over-dramatized music and cheesy cuts between scenes, adds to the film's classic whodunnit tone. Not only that, but it calls back to classic murder mysteries of the past that clearly inspired Johnson in the creation of this film. As he says in the trailer, Knives Out is truly the "murder mystery modernized," and this video certainly speaks to that. Check out the full trailer below:

The marketing team behind Knives Out has clearly had a blast playing with the murder mystery tone in the film. The movie is a love letter to the genre and even Johnson has expressed that he'd love to make a sequel with a new mystery for detective Blanc. That would also be a fun way to pay homage to the mysteries of Agatha Christie, who wrote 33 novels centered on detective Hercule Poirot. Although that's something that wouldn't be coming anytime soon, especially with Johnson still in talks for his Star Wars trilogy, it's still a thrilling idea.

The exciting thing about a film like Knives Out is that it helps breathe new life into the movie theater and what's available to see. It's nice to have a variety of options to choose from, and Johnson's whodunnit is a welcome addition to the already stacked selection of fall releases. Hopefully, if the film does well, more murder mysteries with Benoit Blanc at the helm could make their way into theaters in the years to come.
