The 2010s have been a big period for gaming. In the past ten years, a large number of various games have come out, including many that some would say defined the generation. The magazine Time’s video game list has counted down what the publication thinks are the best games of the decade.

Keep in mind, this is just Time’s own opinion, so even if you think differently, you could probably make your own top ten list, especially since it’s the end of a decade. Thankfully, the list still has a large number of games you could agree with. The games on the list are these:

Grand Theft Auto 5
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Fortnite
Dark Souls
League of Legends
Pokemon Go
Minecraft
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
Portal 2
Disco Elysium

While Time’s video game list doesn’t count a number of the other best-thought-of games that have come out in the past decade such as The Last Of Us, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and others, each of their choices is still important in their own way and so shouldn’t be discarded.

Fortnite, for instance, catapulted the battle royale genre into an actual game genre that many other games try to imitate with varying success. Dark Souls began the “Soulslike” genre, the genre of dark, punishingly difficult action/adventure RPGs that seem to come out more and more often.

Games like Breath of the Wild, Skyrim, and Grand Theft Auto 5 have each left their mark on the open-world gaming community, and Breath of the Wild was a big step not just for gaming in general, but for Nintendo, who proved with it that they had the chops to make an open-world game.

Minecraft has grown into a colossus of a game, and many other building games that have come out since are often trying to imitate its distinctive style and feel but have never had any real success. Pokemon Go is a similar game like it, having introduced millions of people to Pokemon.

Once again, Time’s video game list is only the opinion of Time itself, so you’re free to disagree (respectfully) about its choices and make your own top ten list. Hopefully the coming decade is even better for video games, especially considering the ones that will be coming out in 2020.
