CD Projekt RED Forms Solid Relationship With Andrzej Sapkowski

It’s no secret to any Witcher fan that CD Projekt RED, who famously developed the Witcher video game trilogy, and Andrzej Sapkowski, who wrote the original books, have had a cantankerous relationship. However, just today CD Projekt announced they had solidified their relationship with Sapkowski in a new agreement.

The Witcher has experienced a new explosion in popularity with the release of the games, along with the Netflix series that premiered just today. However, until today, Sapkowski wasn’t really able to take part in its success or the profits that followed.

This was because when CDPR first purchased the video game rights, he didn’t believe the games would be a success and only took their licensing payment, and thus had no access to any of the following royalties. However, that seems to have changed now.

In the statement, put out in a press release on CD Projekt RED’s official website, the studio says that the new agreement satisfied the needs and expectations of both parties, and that the studio hopes for further cooperation in the future from both parties.

This likely means that Sapkowski finally got the money he believed he was owed, which will undoubtedly add to the money that he also got from Netflix when the TV rights for that series were bought from him. CDPR will be getting new rights as well, and the agreement also confirms the company’s title to “The Witcher” IP in games, graphic novels, board games, and merchandise.

Exactly what this will mean for CD Projekt RED and The Witcher in the future remains to be seen, but if both the studio and Sapkowski are happy with the agreement then hopefully it will mean nothing but good things in the future, especially if CD Projekt returns to the Witcher IP after Cyberpunk 2077 releases next year. Along with this news, you can now watch the Witcher series on Netflix.
