Morbius Film Reportedly Confirmed To Take Place In The MCU

Sony Pictures Entertainment's Morbius film is reportedly going to exist in the same reality as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Starring Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, the movie is directed by Daniel Espinosa, who previously helmed Ryan Reynolds/Jake Gyllenhaal's Life. It's the studio's second Spider-Man villain-centric film following the 2018 surprise hit, Venom with Tom Hardy.

Plot details for Sony are still scant at the moment, but as it's supposedly an origin story for the character, fans have turned to its print source for some information. Morbius is a scientist who suffers from a rare blood disease, and as he attempts to find a cure for his condition, he accidentally afflicts himself with vampirirsm. In any case, Morbius' upcoming trailer should clarify some of the general questions regarding the project. This will be Leto's second comic book go-around following his polarizing outing as DC's Joker in David Ayer's Suicide Squad in 2016. And it appears that this project will effectively bring him from the DCEU to the MCU - if this latest report turns out to be true.

FandomWire is reporting that the upcoming Morbius movie will be part of the MCU continuity. Citing anonymous sources, the outlet says that one particular connection that will bridge the popular superhero franchise and the aforementioned movie is J.K. Simmons' contemporary take on J. Jonah Simmons who surprisingly debuted in Spider-Man: Far From Home last year. The article didn't get into details about how this will be executed, but it adds that Tom Holland's Peter Parker is also slated to appear in Venom 2, giving the impression that other Sony Spider-Man villain films such as Madame Webb and Black Cat & Silver Sable will also follow suit.

Marvel Studios and Sony have yet to comment on the matter, and considering the complicated relationship between the two studios, it's best to take this news with a healthy dose of salt. Since Sony's own interconnected film universe started taking shape, there has been confusion as to how it'll relate to the MCU. Rumors of Holland's web-slinging hero appearing in Venom were rampant only to not come to fruition by the time the movie came out. Further making things confusing are the conflicting statements from Kevin Feige and former Sony executive/film producer Amy Pascal about the situation. Pascal previously said that Venom plus Silver Sable and Black Cat are adjuncts to the MCU which she belatedly retracted after Feige said that is not the case.

Another layer to this convoluted situation is the fact that just several months ago, Sony was on the verge of pulling Spider-Man out of the MCU after they couldn't decide on new terms following their initial deal. Fortunately, both camps found a middle ground, resulting in the iconic Marvel hero staying in the MCU with two more films in the pipeline (one solo film and ensemble project). It's unclear what would happen after that, but in case they officially decide to part ways, interlinking Morbius in the MCU would make their split even more difficult to navigate. However, if the idea is that the multiverse will fully factor into both franchises moving forward, perhaps they can use as the means by which Spider-Man can travel between the separate realities.
