Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Trailer Awakens Evil In Los Angeles

Showtime released the trailer for the Penny Dreadful spinoff series, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. The highly anticipated spinoff series premiere is set for this April.

The original Penny Dreadful was a supernatural horror series set in Victorian London. The show's premise was presenting a new even darker spin on classic literary characters like Dr. Frankenstein and Dorian Gray. Fans of the show were disappointed when the original series abruptly ended after the third season in 2016. This was due to the show's creator, John Logan, stating he felt the show had reached its natural conclusion, although fans vehemently disagreed.

Showtime's release of the titillating trailer is well worth the wait. A grisly murder investigation awaits detectives Tiago Vega and Lewis Michener, who will be played by Daniel Zovatto and Nathan Lane. Check out the intriguing trailer below and try not to start counting down the days until the April premiere

Natalie Dormer (who was last seen as the doomed Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones) narrates the trailer as the ambiguously evil character Magda, a shapeshifting demon who can assume the likeness of anyone she pleases. Dormer's chilling narration throughout the trailer set against the backdrop of murder, Mexican-American folklore influences, and the looming threat of war effectively enhances the show's promise to viewers of intrigue and darkness. It's challenging not to feel a tangible thrill when Dormer says, "All mankind needs to become the monster he truly is is being told he can." Original Penny Dreadful alum Rory Kinnear, who played John Clare or the Creature in the original show, is set to return as a German pediatrician in the new series. Other cast members that have been announced are Jessica Garza and Johnathan Nieves, who will play Tiago's siblings respectively. Brent Spiner will also be joining the cast, playing Captain Ned Vanderhoff, the direct superior to Tiago Vega and Lewis Michener.

Although fans have had to wait three years for a follow-up to the original show, the intriguing first trailer shows that the new spinoff will be worth the wait. What made the original show a must see was its effortless weaving of supernatural and gothic elements into a very real historical era. Penny Dreadful: City of Angels seems to be enthusiastically embracing that tradition, and will weave the origins of Los Angeles with demons and angels, some monster, some man. (Logan has emphasized that the new series will emphasize real life political and social elements even more than the original.) It will be interesting to see how the new series weaves in the elements of Mexican-American folklore which which will more than likely enhance the overall immersion of the audience into the more mystical and otherworldly aspects of the story itself. Speculation remains at an all time high for the show's premiere on April 26, but more than likely there will be plenty of demons to keep things interesting in the city of angels.
