Jack Reacher TV Show Officially Headed To Amazon

Amazon just officially ordered a Jack Reacher TV series. Jack Reacher was originally a series of crime thriller novels, written by Lee Child. The novel's protagonist, Jack Reacher, is a former major in the military police who roams the United States investigating dangerous cases. There are currently 24 books in the series. The books were adapted into a movie, Jack Reacher in 2012, starring Tom Cruise. There was also a sequel in 2016 called Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.

While the first Jack Reacher movie received mixed critical reviews and performed poorly in the US, the film did well in the international box office, leading to the sequel being green-lit. Despite starring Tom Cruise, arguably the world's biggest action star, who also did his own stunts during the movies, the sequel was also met with mixed to negative reviews. After the sequel, author Lee Child regained the rights to his work and shopped around at different networks and services in order to create a new series with a different actor who more resembled his character. Child stated that he wanted the character to be portrayed by someone bigger and taller than Tom Cruise. In 2019, it was announced that Amazon had won the rights to a Jack Reacher series.

According to TVLine, Amazon has finally announced that it has officially placed a series order for Jack Reacher. The announcement was made by Head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke, during the Television Critics Association winter press tour. The first season of the Amazon series will be based on the first Jack Reacher novel, The Killing Floor. Nick Santora will serve as the showrunner. Santora is known for his work on shows like Scorpion and Prison Break.

Addressing the upcoming show, Santora stated, “Lee Child has created an incredible character and world." He followed by saying that, "It will be the goal of every writer, producer, actor, executive and crew member to capture the essence of Mr. Child’s books – and luckily Lee has been there, and will continue to be there, to help guide us along the way in this series. He is the pulse of Reacher.” In addition to Amazon Studios, the show will also be produced by Skydance Television and Paramount Television Studios. Salke shared her thoughts about the new project. “We look forward to expanding the of the Jack Reacher universe and bringing more thrilling action to our Amazon Prime Video audience.”

Amazon has exciting new projects on the horizon. In addition to Jack Reacher, there is the upcoming, long-awaited Lord of the Rings television series, which has already been cast. Amazon also has a slate of other popular shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Boys, and Jack Ryan. There's sure to be some confusion for viewers once Amazon has two Jack-based action shows. It remains to be seen how well Jack Reacher will be received in the absence of Cruise. In addition to being too small for the role, the author of the books also said that Cruise is now too old for the action-based role. The lead has not yet been cast. However, the team behind the series seems extremely confident that they can pull it off. Salke stated that “Lee Child’s Jack Reacher book series is a global phenomenon with one of entertainment’s most well-known heroes, and a perfect fit for Amazon Studios’ slate of bold, character-driven series.
