Netflix's Lost in Space Renewed For Season 3, Will Be Its Last

Netflix has announced that their hit science-fiction series Lost in Space is coming back for another season in 2021, but it will be the show's last. The show is a reimagining of the 1960's sci-fi series of the same name. Taking place thirty years in the future, the story follows the Robinson family as they venture to a new home as part of the colonization of space. They quickly end up off course and have to adapt to a dangerous and strange environment they know nothing about in order to survive.

The Netflix Original stars Molly Parker (House of Cards), Toby Stephens (Black Sails), Maxwell Jenkins (Sense8), Taylor Russell (Waves), Mina Sundwall (Maggie's Plan), Ignacio Serricchio (Bones) and Parker Posey (Dazed and Confused). Zack Estrin, Kevin Burns, Jon Jashni, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless all serve as executive producers on the show. Season 2 of Lost in Space premiered on the streamer on December 24, 2019 to positive reviews.

Along with the news of Lost in Space's renewal, Netflix announced that showrunner and executive producer Estrin inked a multi-year overall deal exclusively with the streamer. Estrin shared some comments on the upcoming end of the Robinson family's story:

From the beginning, we've always viewed this particular story of The Robinsons as a trilogy. A three part epic family adventure with a clear beginning, middle and end. [...] So while this chapter of Lost In Space is coming to a rousing conclusion, I’m excited about continuing to explore new stories with my friends at Netflix, and for all of the incredible possibilities that lie ahead.
Legendary Television, who produces the series, posted about the renewal on their Twitter, along with the news that it will arrive sometime next year.

Featuring an expanding cast of talented and familiar actors, Lost in Space is a family-friendly space adventure that consistently pays homage to the science-fiction movies that led to its creation and success. The Robinsons' final destination is Alpha Centauri, though they continue to face troubles on their way there, if the place even exists. The recent second season successfully sets up season 3, with a lot left to be explored with these characters. The third season is expected to have ten episodes, just as seasons 1 and 2 did.

It's clear that Netflix and the creative team behind Lost in Space have always planned for the story to be told in its entirety through three seasons. With such a clear plan, there's no chance of stretching the story too far or getting a surprise cancellation from Netflix. While it's sad to hear that this show is ending, executive producer Estrin is sure to bring the same style of adventure and great character development to his future projects with Netflix.
