The largest movie studios and record labels are going to start a new weapon against piracy – the Center for Copyright Information. A number of American major Internet service providers will also join the fight.

Media reports are informing that a number of America’s most important broadband providers, including AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon, in cooperation with the creative industry, are going to launch the CCI (Center for Copyright Information), which is meant to assist in the effort to fight Internet piracy.

The CCI is headed by Jill Lesser – a managing director of lobbying and public policy company The Glover Park Group. She is also a member of the board at the Center for Democracy and Technology (a non-commercial group fighting for the freedom of speech on the worldwide web).

The biography of Jill Lesser can let us know that she has concentrated her efforts on copyright and consumer protection, coupled with telecommunications policy issues for her clients in the entertainment industry.

The task of Center for Copyright Information, among others, is to educate people about copyright legislation and the consequences of its violation. According to its idea, the administrators’ job will be to assess the viability of mitigation measures and the ability of entertainment outfits to identify online pirates. It will also have to promote the graduate response program to non-participating Internet service providers. Meanwhile, anti piracy experts insist that the “three-strikes” system (aka “graduated response”) is a very important instrument to stop piracy, and that broadband providers are the front line of the worldwide web. The Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America were the first to announce intention of launching Center for Copyright Information in July 2011.

The representatives of the creative industry explained that the Center for Copyright Information would also try to create a communication bridge between Internet service providers and the entertainment companies. Nevertheless, broadband providers are still too worried about their subscribers’ rights.

That’s why Jill Lesser’s job will now be to keep peace between broadband providers and the entertainment groups. It still remains to be seen whether this strategy will work or not.
