According to a recent rumor, Elden Ring might be releasing 2020 – despite the absence of any new official information regarding the game. The upcoming FromSoftware’s title is being developed in collaboration with George R.R. Martin, the author behind the A Song of Ice and Fire book series; better known as Game of Thrones.

Elden Ring was initially announced almost a year ago, at E3 2019 during Microsoft's Xbox conference. The anticipated reveal was made via a short teaser trailer, which didn’t feature any gameplay footage. Instead, the cinematic video focused on depicting atmospheric scenes and showcasing various characters from another Souls-like experience. As it is outlined in the announcement trailer, the game will offer a completely new and original setting; a few leaks, however, have already revealed that Norse mythology is the source of inspiration for Elden Ring. Players can expect a mesmerizing new world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin, and if there’s any credence to the recent rumor, the game is on its way to release later this year.

The rumor regarding the possible 2020 release of Elden Ring was shared by a NeoGAF user Arctos who stated that the information came directly from a former Bandai Namco employee. According to the leak, the global health situation along with unspecified changes in the development process resulted in delaying the release window to summer, which later moved even further to Q3 of the current fiscal year so that the team could work on next-gen ports of Elden Ring. That implies an October-December 2020 release window. As for the game itself, it has already reached a playable state content-wise, and the ongoing task for the team at FromSoftware is to optimize and polish the experience while preparing the ports for PS5 and Xbox Series X. Arctos stresses that players shouldn’t expect anything peculiar other than higher resolutions and framerates from the updated version of Elden Ring for the next generation.

Another piece of information shared by Artcos reveals that Sony was unsuccessfully trying to convince Bandai Namco to make Elden Ring a temporary PS5 exclusive, which could’ve been a great selling point for the new console. The PS5 port of the game was supposed to be outsourced and developed by Japan Studio as FromSoftware didn’t have the resources to handle it internally. The most recent rumor, however, indicates that these plans were cancelled as FromSoftware is currently working on porting the game. Arctos does warn that due to the fact that his friend doesn’t work at Bandai Namco anymore, the latest piece of information regarding the release window might also end up being outdated and misleading.

With all that being said, a late 2020 release does look believable when compared to previous titles by FromSoftware. With Sekiro, it took the game roughly a year and a half to reach the release date after it was initially announced. Given that Elden Ring was officially revealed last June at E3 2019, December 2020 fits precisely in that schedule. Obviously, nothing is confirmed on that matter for the time being, and the only trustful source would be an official word from the companies involved in Elden Ring’s production.

Elden Ring doesn’t have a release date but is confirmed to launch for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
