The newest film addition to the X-Men universe, The New Mutants, will be shown drive-in movie style at Pasadena's Rose Bowl Stadium throughout August and September. The film follows five young mutants who have recently discovered their abilities and are not yet practiced in using them. The mutants, played by Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams and Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton as well as Anya Taylor-Joy, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga, are trying to escape from a hospital-style building in which they are locked. The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone, with X-Men franchise alums Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner acting as producers.

This movie has already been subject to an unbelievable amount of delays. Back in 2017, casting and location scouting had already begun and the film was given an April 2018 release date. Clashing visions over the style of the movie pushed it to a February 2019 release, and then again to August 2019. Then, Disney acquired Fox—the studio that was originally making the movie—and it was once again pushed back, this time to April 2020. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, The New Mutants had yet another delay. Finally, with theaters reopening across the country, the movie is releasing at the end of August 2020.

Just days before the release of The New Mutants, the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, CA, tweeted that the film will be coming to the stadium's parking lot for a drive-in screening experience. The tweet included a link to buy tickets, which clarified that the movie will be shown starting Thursday, August 27, and will continue through September 13 with times varying by day. It also stated that the event is in partnership with 20th Century Studios, the now Disney-owned studio that was once 20th Century Fox. The real kicker is the ticket price, though—each car will have to cough up $35 for the screening.

Movie theaters across the United States are reopening, but COVID-19 is still ravaging the country. Many health experts believe that attending indoor movies is dangerous as guests will be breathing the same air for multiple hours, which is a major way for the virus to spread. Various movie and media websites—Screen Rant included—are refusing to review The New Mutants and other theater-only releases in order to maintain the health and well-being of their staff. Still, one review has come in—and unfortunately, it's not great.

Although $35 may seem like a lot for a movie, it's a fair price to pay for a much safer viewing experience. Hollywood is hurting from all the delays and cancellations and fans are eager to both support their favorite franchises and have some new forms of entertainment. The drive-in movie concept is a great alternative. Every viewer comes in their own car, and the outdoors aspect means patrons aren't breathing the same recycled air. Although it's not a perfect solution, the Rose Bowl Stadium's screening of The New Mutants will hopefully inspire other similar drive-in experiences.
