Blumhouse looks set to bring their anticipated reboot of the cult favorite, The Craft, home via VOD this Halloween. The 1996 film experienced a slow rise to the status it currently enjoys among horror fans, and a reboot has been in the works since 2015. This time around, the film will have the advantage of a female director, with Zoe Lister-Jones arguably offering a perspective that hadn’t been considered when Andrew Fleming made the original.

While fans of the original have been waiting to see just when The Craft reboot would arrive, it now seems that its release will be handled via VOD. According to Bloody Disgusting, the October 27th release date was announced via Amazon’s “New for October” press release. At the same time, however, neither Blumhouse nor Columbia Pictures have officially confirmed the reboot’s release date.

A release just before Halloween is a great move for Blumhouse, though as has unfortunately become the norm since the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, the reboot will lack the added fun of being released theatrically. However, the pandemic and its forced closure of cinemas just happens to be a hurdle that films now face, even if it means that theatres are at risk of being ushered out of a new era in cinema. If The Craft’s VOD release is officially confirmed for an October 27th release, this will at least be one highlight of socially distanced Halloween parties.

The original The Craft focused on a group of outcast girls at a Catholic school who begin to dabble in witchcraft. What seems like a good idea at first eventually proves itself to be anything but, and it isn’t long before the girls are in way over their heads. The reboot is reportedly taking the same angle, though it will incorporate different elements for a new generation. This time around, the cast features Cailee Spaeny, Gideon Aldon (The Society), Lovie Simone (Greenleaf), and newcomer Zoe Luna.
