Ghostbusters: Afterlife star Ernie Hudson promises the new film's story ties into the first two installments in the franchise. After years of struggling to get off the ground, the true Ghostbusters 3 is finally happening. The 2016 reboot brought in new characters and a female-led team, but Afterlife will largely ignore that and supply the direct sequel to Ghostbusters II that fans have long been waiting for. Afterlife centers on a single mom (Carrie Coon) moving to a new town with her children (Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace), who discover their family's ties to the Ghostbusters from thirty years ago.

In addition to introducing Paul Rudd into the franchise, Afterlife will see the original Ghostbusters cast return in their iconic roles, save for Rick Moranis and the late Harold Ramis. Nevertheless, Afterlife is shaping up to be the sequel fans have prayed for, which, for some, comes as a welcome decision following the mixed reception to the 2016 Ghostbusters. Stranger Things star Wolfhard previously promised Afterlife is faithful to the original 1984 film, and now Hudson is echoing that sentiment in some new comments.

Hudson, who will once again play Winston Zeddemore in Afterlife, recently spoke with Yes Have Some about the highly-anticipated film. While he couldn't share any specifics, he did promise Afterlife is the movie Ghostbusters fans have wanted to see for a very long time. "It wasn't until I got the script and read the script that I thought, 'Not only is it happening, but this is really good'," Hudson revealed. "It's really in line with what the fans have been hoping for, and it really ties into the first two movies." He also shared that while he did enjoy the 2016 Ghostbusters, "it was kind of a different take on it." Hudson was very excited when he got the script for Afterlife, which certainly bodes well for the film.

Fans have already begun to speculate about how exactly Afterlife will connect to the original two films, with the biggest theory being Wolfhard and Grace are Egon's (Ramis) grandchildren. The first trailer for Afterlife, which was released last December, saw the two kids discovering some of the Ghostbuster's original equipment, which certainly shows the franchise is going back to its roots in a big way. Hudson's positive comments about Afterlife will also likely soothe fans' concerns and fuel excitement for its arrival.

Had this year gone to plan, Afterlife would have already been released. However, the coronavirus pandemic delayed it to March 2021. As a result, fans are left waiting even longer than expected before they get the Ghostbusters sequel. Luckily, however, another trailer might be on the way in the coming months to help hype up its new release date, so fans will finally get some new hints about where Afterlife will take the beloved franchise. It'll all tie together next spring.
