Fortnite Could Get 120 FPS Xbox Series X/S Upgrade

Recommended Posts

Fortnite may be getting an upgrade to run at 120 frames per second on the Xbox Series X/S, on top of the enhancements it's already gotten for the next-gen consoles. From what started as a simple concept, Fortnite has grown into one of the biggest games in the world. Its popularity stays strong to this day, with many fans curious about how the game will hold up in future consoles.

Xbox Series X brags about its faster, more advanced technology. With the capabilities of running games at peak frame rates and resolutions, it enhances even games brought over from the last generation. There are many titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War that goes to show what the Xbox Series X is capable of, utilizing all of its features to its maximum potential for faster loading times and realistic graphics. With so much potential, Fortnite pushed to improve its graphics and run smoothly using these features.

In an interview with Xbox Wire, Epic Games lead console programmer Ben Woodhouse said that while Fortnite struggled to maintain 60 frames per second on previous consoles, it would be capable of easily running 120 frames per second on the Xbox Series X. The new hardware makes previously impossible targets reachable, as will an update coming for Fortnite itself. Currently, Fortnite uses Unreal Engine 4. However, Epic Games plans to move onto Unreal Engine 5 next year to not only be more compatible with future consoles but to improve the graphics and performance of the game. This can be especially important in a shooter game like Fortnite, where there is a ton of building and shooting going on, so every frame counts.

With how often Fortnite is evolving, the upgrade to a better engine leaves more room for optimization. The game has moved beyond just a standard battle royale, with players capable of using superpowers. There are also events like Fortnitemares or live concerts featuring celebrities. Because of this, players may start to worry if they are capable of running Fortnite on their consoles or computers. It may keep players satisfied knowing Epic Games is working on both improving the general look of Fortnite and ensuring that the average player can still enjoy the game at a reasonable FPS regardless of how it evolves.

With Fortnite having constant additions like the jetpack, it is always important to keep in mind the game's overall performance. It can be extremely infuriating for a fan of the game to lose their ability to play simply because the console or computer they are using can no longer run it. This especially becomes a problem with future generations of video games, where high-end realistic graphics are becoming the norm.

Fortnite is available now for Android, iOS, macOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
