Army of the Dead will release on Netflix in Summer 2021, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Ana de la Reguera, Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Garret Dillahunt, Hiroyuki Sanada, Matthias Schweighöfer, Omari Hardwick, Raul Castillo, and Tig Notaro. The film follows a group of mercenaries who wade into the post-apocalyptic landscape of Las Vegas to pull off a heist.

First announced in 2oo8, Army of the Dead started to gain steam when Netflix acquired the distribution rights from Warner Bros. in January 2019. Fans have been eagerly tracking updates on the genre mashup, from glimpses behind the scenes of the project to the news that a prequel was in the works. However, audiences will still have to wait a little longer to see how the different elements of Army of the Dead merge, but now there’s a general idea of when the film will arrive.

According to Bloody Disgusting, the zombie heist movie is scheduled to be released in summer 2021. Army of the Dead’s premiere will coincide with an official illustrated companion book, titled Army of the Dead: The Making of the Film, which aims to offer a behind the scenes glimpse of the feature’s characters, zombies, and locations. The book, filled with exclusive set photos and storyboards by Snyder, signifies that Netflix plans to give Army of the Dead a big spotlight when it becomes available to stream.

Another indicator to consider is that Netflix has started to reserve its summer releases for some of its most notable draws. In 2019, the buzzy romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe debuted just as summer had started rolling. Then, in June of that year, Adam Sandler’s Murder Mystery came out and became one of the streamer’s most popular originals. More recently, when The Old Guard arrived this past July, it was watched in more than 72 million households. Netflix has an obvious advantage over traditional movie studios in that its easy accessibility could make any movie a surprise hit. Still, it’s also well-positioned to create a summer blockbuster season of its own. It bodes well for Army of the Dead to hold such a coveted space in the release schedule.

There’s also the fact the highly anticipated Snyder Cut is currently slated to arrive between early-to-mid 2021. Though it will come out as a miniseries on the rival service HBO Max, Netflix hopes to capitalize on the interest surrounding the director by debuting Army of the Dead within months of Snyder’s cut of Justice League. That calculation is likely to pay off, as both critics and general audiences will get the chance to see how Snyder fares when helming the distinctly different project. Depending on the exact months that the two movies release, fans could be looking ahead to The Summer of Snyder in 2021.
