The 355 Spy Movie Delayed One Year To January 2022

Jessica Chastain's all-female spy film The 355 is delayed until January 2022. First announced way back in 2018, the spy thriller from director Simon Kinberg co-stars Chastain with a powerhouse roster of female actors, including Diane Kruger, Bingbing Fan, Penélope Cruz and Lupita Nyong'o. The much less significant male portion of the movie's cast includes Sebastian Stan and Edgar Ramirez. A trailer has already been released for the film, which sees a CIA agent teaming up with a global crew of spies to take down a mercenary armed with a top-secret weapon.

Unfortunately fans excited to see Chastain, Kruger, Fan, Cruz and Nyong'o teaming up to kick some international butt will have to wait a year longer, as Universal has decided to push the film back from January 2021 to January 2022 (via The Wrap). An untitled event film was originally slated by the studio to debut on the new date for The 355.

Release dates are of course presently in a state of extreme disarray due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, which has thrown production schedules off kilter while wreaking havoc on the movie theater industry. In a sign of just how dire things have become for theatrical releases, Warner Bros. recently made the previously unthinkable move of slating massive event film Wonder Woman 1984 for release both in theaters and on HBO Max, to accommodate movie fans who still aren't comfortable about returning to cinemas given the pandemic. It's interesting that instead of electing to release The 355 on a streaming service or via VOD, Universal has elected to stick with theatrical release, pushing the movie back a whole year in hopes that by 2022 the COVID crisis will have run its course.
