Game of Thrones: Jason Momoa bulked up for Khal Drogo by eating pizza. The landmark fantasy drama based on the book series, A Song of Fire and Ice by George R.R. Martin, first launched on HBO in 2011. Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Game of Thrones ran for eight seasons, became the top Emmy award winner, in history, across the cable net’s legendary slate of programming, and turned some of today’s biggest stars including Momoa, Sophie Turner, and Peter Dinklage, into household names.

Momoa’s iconic character Khal Drogo was a massive hulk of a man and leader over a nomadic horde of tribesmen known as Dothraki that roamed the plains of Essos. His most significant contribution was naming Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, as his wife/ Khaleesi. She would go on to become the “Mother of Dragons” and a deciding factor in the war for the Iron Throne. Drogo commanded respect, due equally to his imposing size as well as his savage nature. Drogo would die after only 1 season, but not before leaving an indelible mark on the heart of his Khaleesi, ultimately guiding and shaping the direction of the entire series to come.

Khal Drogo’s hunky frame was his most signature aspect, which, according to Momoa’s interview with Men’s Health, was due to the actor's consumption of tons of pizza. In the site’s latest installments of Vs. the Internet, Momoa answers several fan queries regarding his workout routines and reveals that to retain mass that season, he ate virtually anything and everything in sight, like pizza and steak. He achieved the size he initially lacked to embody Drogo by eating a ton of carbs and protein and lifting lots of weights.

“Some guys are like genetically ripped and have abs and I don’t. I generally don’t have a six-pack, which has been my nemesis forever. I’ve always got a solid four-pack, maybe even a two-pack, and that’s all about diet which is challenging for me.”

After his breakout role in Game of Thrones, Momoa starred in several other films before being cast as Arthur Curry in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, and the James Wan directed Aquaman. Throughout the filming of these action-led features, Momoa retained a dedicated fitness regimen. The Hawaiian native recommends doing the things you enjoy to stay in shape, which, for him, included rock climbing. In addition to strength training and muscle building, Momoa also invests in cardio work, which served him immensely during the intense desert filming for Duncan Idaho in the upcoming epic, Dune.

It’s reassuring to note that even the 41-year-old Momoa shares fitness woes, much like the common man. He acknowledges the challenge of keeping his abs toned due to his traditional Hawaiian diet, the difficulties in rock climbing as a bigger guy, and the fact that he once considered himself “very small” before becoming Khal Drogo. It often takes discipline and sacrifice to reach our goals, but the Game of Thrones star makes it looks easy.
