The Boys Season 3 Starts Filming Within a Month, Says Antony Starr

The Boys season 3 will probably start filming within a month, Homelander actor Antony Starr has confirmed. Amazon Prime's rabble-rousing superhero show, based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic-book series of the same name, follows the eponymous band of vigilantes as they combat and strive to expose a team of corrupt, corporate-owned superpowered individuals called The Seven and their parent organization Vought International. Since its premiere in 2019, The Boys has been a big streaming hit for Amazon Prime, and the show's stars including Starr, Karl Urban, Erin Moriarty, Jack Quaid, and Dominique McElligott have all amassed huge fanbases thanks to their stellar performances in the show.

Ahead of the debut of its second season, which garnered rave reviews and outstanding viewership figures despite some controversy surrounding its weekly release schedule, The Boys was renewed for season 3 during the show's Comic-Con@Home panel in July 2020. While announcing the renewal, showrunner Eric Kripke had hoped to begin production in early 2021. But the plan wasn't set in stone given the fluidity of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. Recently, in fact, there has been a spike in COVID-19 cases in the country. But, thankfully, that hasn't halted TV and movie production in Toronto, where The Boys is also filmed. The show, as also affirmed by Quaid in a recent Instagram post, thus remains on track to meet its targeted filming date, and Starr has now even teased a provisional period for the start of production.

In a recent conversation with Comic Book, Starr stated that while he doesn't have an exact date for when the production on season 3 will begin, he knows that it will happen very soon, probably within a month. As per Starr, due to COVID and the freezing weather in Toronto, the cast isn't arriving all at once to shoot for the upcoming season. Rather, the intake is quite "staggered." The actor himself is quite excited about returning to the sets of The Boys, but, at the same time, he is anxious about adhering to all the social distancing protocols now that he has to work in the "new normal." Starr hopes to fly to Toronto very soon. He will then have to quarantine for two weeks before he can start shooting for season 3.

During the interview, Starr also promised that the upcoming season was going to be the most action-packed one yet. This news is particularly exciting for fans of the show as it hints towards potential action sequences between Starr's Homelander and Jensen Ackles' original supe Soldier Boy, who is primed to make his debut in season 3. Though he is yet to start filming, Starr has already read several scripts for the forthcoming season and they have him very excited. The actor says that how things ultimately unravel is obviously a mystery to him, but everything that he has read so far, he finds to be a lot of fun.

The previous two seasons of The Boys arrived one year apart, in December 2019 and December 2020. So fans logically expect season 3 to be out by late 2021. But with the explosive events and revelations that took place during the season 2 finale, there are a lot of plotlines that season 3 will need to showcase. In the new iteration, the story will probably head in a new direction and the origins of some of the more obscure characters like Black Noir and Victoria Neuman will be explored. Hence it's better for the show to start production as early as possible, as this will allow each episode and each storyline to be meticulously executed. While Starr's statements do show that The Boys is well-prepared to begin production soon, it is hard to predict if the show will be able to stick to its filming plan because of the frequent waves of Covid-19 infections that keep plunging TV and film production in jeopardy.
