Liam Neeson Wants His Star Wars Character To Appear In Obi-Wan Kenobi Show

Liam Neeson is interested in having his Star Wars character return for Disney’s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series. The new Star Wars spin-off hopes to find the same degree of success that The Mandalorian has enjoyed to date, and fans can’t wait to see what sort of challenges that Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan will face.

However, it’s not just Obi-Wan who fans are deeply interested in. As the Jedi tasked with watching over and training Anakin Skywalker, every Star Wars fan is aware of how complicated things ultimately became. Within this rich history, numerous characters play essential roles; chief among these is Qui-Gon Jinn, Neeson's character in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. That first film in George Lucas’ prequel trilogy set the stage for much to come, and Jinn was introduced as the Jedi master who was responsible for training Kenobi in the ways of the Jedi. Unfortunately, Qui-Gon Jinn was killed by Darth Maul at the end of Phantom Menace. Still, Jinn and Kenobi's relationship was undoubtedly a rich one that resonates with Kenobi throughout his life.

As the groundwork for the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series continues to be laid, Star Wars fans' excitement is palpable. So many questions remain, and each day seems to bring more possibilities. The latest bit of conjecture comes courtesy of a recent Collider interview with Neeson. When asked if he would be interested in returning to the role of Qui-Gon Jinn for Disney’s new Obi-Wan series, Neeson stated: “Sure, I’d be up for that, yeah.”



While the return of Neeson alongside McGregor would certainly be a lot of fun, it is important first to make the intended timeline clear. Disney’s Obi-Wan series takes place eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, meaning that Jinn will have long since been dead. This doesn’t preclude Jinn from being an active part of the new series, but it does mean that the character can only really return in a limited capacity as a Force Ghost. Of course, flashbacks could also contain the character, but these could be difficult to pull off considering that Phantom Menace was released over twenty years ago. Neeson is 68-years-old at present, meaning that to fit in a flashback aptly, he’d have to appear younger than at least 48 – something that could be done but might not be ideal.

If everything did work out as so many Star Wars fans want it to, and Neeson returned as Qui-Gon Jinn in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series, even a small role could be exciting. As one of the Star Wars franchise’s most mysterious characters, Obi-Wan lived a life that is sure to be rife with intrigue, even when he was seemingly hiding out on Tatooine in his later years. Delving into and exploring this character requires a certain amount of looking back, and because of this, Neeson’s Jinn could fit perfectly within that narrative.
