Developer Bloober Team has released the opening 18 minutes of gameplay for its next psychological horror title, The Medium, which hits PC and Xbox later this week. Bloober Team's horror adventure seems as though it will differ drastically from its other projects such as Observer.

Instead of a first-person experience like the studio's previous endeavors, The Medium is a third-person game. Players are to assume the role of Marianne, the titular medium who has access to both the real and spirit worlds. Thus, everything has two sides from her perspective, which also translates to The Medium's dual-reality gameplay mechanic. The Xbox console-exclusive even boasts a dual soundtrack, composed by Bloomber Team's very own Arkadiusz Reikowski and Silent Hill's Akira Yamaoka.

In conjunction with IGN, Bloober Team unleashed the first 18 minutes of gameplay for The Medium. The opening sections reveal more about Marianne, her backstory, and the gameplay in general. Interestingly, the game's third-person perspective works similar to that of Quantic Dream titles like Heavy Rain. As opposed to the camera being fixed behind the character's back, there's a much wider perspective on display, though close-up angles are put to use whenever Marianne interacts with an object. The latest look at gameplay also underscores how Marianne in the real world responds to circumstances that simultaneously affect her in the spirit realm.

This isn't the first chunk of gameplay that Bloober Team's shown. Earlier this month, the studio showcased about 15 minutes of The Medium in action, complete with a peek at both the real world and the spirit realm. That particular walkthrough most notably showcased how puzzles work within the project's dual world design style.

Bloober Team first unveiled The Medium nearly a decade ago in 2012. Originally meant to launch on PlayStation 3, Wii U, and Xbox 360, the game's ambitious technological needs would not have been well served at the time. Thus, the psychological horror experience reemerged last year as an Xbox Series X|S console-exclusive. Based on what the studio's shown, so far, it appears the advancements in technology are working wonders for The Medium. The many years between its initial announcement and forthcoming release also allowed Bloober Team to develop a link between The Medium and 2017's Observer. Players can see how the connection plays out for themselves very soon.

The Medium comes to PC and Xbox Series X|S on January 28.
