Attack of the Show and X-Play, two of G4TV’s classic gaming and pop-culture shows, will both be making proper comebacks this summer. Attack of the Show blended internet and pop culture news with comedy skits, interviews, and other variety segments, with a common focus on video games, while X-Play adopted a similar structure with a more limited gaming focus. Both shows have been off the air for years, but a new reveal from G4TV reveals they’re about to make their comeback.

G4 launched as a pop culture TV network in 2002, with a variety of original programming that focuses heavily on the early internet and video game culture. Attack of the Show quickly became the network’s most iconic show, airing five days a week with different sorts of light, comedic coverage of pop culture news. The show featured onscreen talent including Olivia Munn, Chris Hardwick, and Jessica Chobot. X-Play followed a similar structure, with a tighter focus on video game coverage. Both shows ended in 2013 after G4 officially shut down.

In 2020 it was announced that G4TV would be relaunching its network in addition to some presence on digital platforms like YouTube and Twitch. Now, a new promo video has let fans know when they can expect to see the return of Attack of the Show and X-Play: summer 2021. In just a few months the hit pop culture shows will be back online, hopefully bringing the same blend of pop culture coverage and original comedy content that made them so popular with fans when they first aired.

Some of the details of G4’s revival are still unclear. The landscape of video game coverage, in particular, has changed dramatically since the network went off the air, with YouTube and Twitch now the de facto kings of the field. The new G4 is being built up under Comcast, meaning that it will be a proper TV presence. It could be difficult blending the modern arena of games content creation with a medium many see as antiquated, but the continued popularity and name-recognition of programming like Attack of the Show and X-Play certainly bode well.

For fans of G4TV’s classic content, the network’s return is welcome news. Much of modern video game culture was inspired directly or indirectly by the content G4 created during its first televised tenure, and it’s exciting to see a former giant of the industry returning now that games are a bigger business than ever before. Viewers new and old can look forward to both Attack of the Show and X-Play returning to the air later this year.
