Brie Larson explains the emotional reason why she took on the role of Captain Marvel. Larson's MCU debut premiered in 2019 and was the first woman-led Marvel film to hit theaters. The film premiered to positive reviews, but it was beset online by trolls who review bombed the film for its feminist leanings and Larson's own outspoken feminism. The reaction to Captain Marvel revealed the darker side of fandoms, but Larson and Marvel were undeterred.

Captain Marvel 2 is currently in development with a slated 2022 release date. Larson will be reprising the role of Carol Danvers. She will also be joined by Teyonah Parris (who can currently be seen in WandaVision as Monica Rambeau) and Iman Vellani who will make her own MCU debut later this year in Ms. Marvel. Nia DaCosta will be taking over directing duties from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck but, otherwise, details are scarce on the film as it gears up to go into production, likely later this year.

Ahead of production Larson has begun preparing for the role again and she opened up about her process to WWE. The actress also revealed why taking on the role is such an emotional thing for her. Larson cites all the varied responses to her character from people of all walks of life. To Larson, Carol Danvers is a character that transcends division and touches the hearts of fans in different ways. It's not about the personal benefit, says Larson, but the ways in which the character she plays is able to inspire people to feel powerful. She said:

Quote

The thing that has just broken my heart open the most has been how many different kinds of people respond to Carol. It’s so much more than me, and so much more than my body holds. Different sexual orientations or ways that you identify with gender or race. It goes beyond that. And that’s the thing that’s been exciting for me.

That, it’s kind of exactly like seeing you wrestle with the star, with why I chose to do the movie, so I was like ‘I want to work really hard to create a symbol that other people can take and wear and feel power in,' that was it. It wasn’t about me, it was about her and that star and what this means.

Carol Danvers' presence in the MCU has been scarce since her first appearance. She appeared briefly in Avengers: Endgame, but since then she has stayed on the sidelines. Having made her debut so late in Phase 3, it's clear that Marvel has bigger things in mind for the character in the future and those things are slowly becoming clearer as her future appearances are laid out. She is expected to be a big presence in Ms. Marvel and will serve as one of the main inspirations for Kamala Khan.

Marvel is clearly and wisely disregarding the misogynist trolls who felt the need to denigrate the character because of their own ideological leanings, doubling down on the girl power at the heart of the character. Captain Marvel 2 is shaping up to be a team-up between Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, and Monica Rambeau's own hero role and it seems like it could help make up for what many saw as a weak attempt at bringing all of the women of the MCU together at the end of Avengers: Endgame. With Black Widow also on the horizon, Marvel is hopefully beginning to lay the groundwork for a more inclusive MCU, one that could be spearheaded by Larson and Captain Marvel.
