By mistake, Microsoft invites to hack Mario Kart 64 with browser extensions

Technology has come a long way, to the point that now we can play classic titles almost anywhere, although that is not always entirely legal. In fact, Microsoft recently got caught up in a little internet controversy, accidentally inviting Edge users to hack Mario Kart 64.

The thing is, the official Edge developer account shared a tweet promoting browser extensions. Among them were some to play classic titles like Pac-Man, Tetris and Mario Kart.

You can see the evidence below:

What caused controversy is that the extension that allows Mario Kart 64 does not have the approval of Nintendo and also downloads the ROM of the game to work. On the other hand, the version of Tetris available is a clone that does not have the official license to be called that. This is why it is about piracy and some users pointed it out to Microsoft.

"The Mario Kart 64 extension downloads a ROM of the N64 game. pic.twitter.com/BY9VDMqp3B

"Tetris doesn’t download a ROM, but it’s a clone that isn’t endorsed by The Tetris Company. pic.twitter.com/hTu4VUGxiS

Microsoft already removed the social media post

Piracy is not something Microsoft supports. In fact, with services like Xbox Game Pass they prove that it is something they want to fight against by making content more accessible to their community. This is why the company removed the post.

The above also tells us that this news does not represent Microsoft’s values. It was just an unfortunate situation where the social media manager got excited about something and didn’t think twice before posting.

Now, the Mario Kart 64 extension is still available in Edge. We’ll see if Microsoft withdraws it for piracy.
