OTT guidelines | Streaming apps weigh IAMAI as self-regulatory body

Top executives of the online curated content platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar and ZEE5 met on Monday and exchanged ideas on the implications of the new guidelines for the sector that were notified by the government last Thursday.

“All the players met today for the first time since the new guidelines were announced,” one of the executives told ET. “It was just an initial discussion, where everyone got together with their input and ideas on the way forward.”

Another executive said that players are still trying to wrap their heads around guidelines and how their business and operations would be impacted.

While the second-tier will include an independent self-regulatory body headed by a retired high court or Supreme Court judge, which will decide on matters related to content, it’s the third-tier, an inter-departmental committee in the MIB with complete oversight over the process, which has perturbed the OTT platforms.

When asked if IAMAI or its members are looking at challenging the rules in the courts, one executive said that there is no consensus on taking legal recourse yet.
 

It can ask the OTT player to issue an apology, include a warning card or a disclaimer, reclassify ratings of relevant content and make appropriate modifications to any piece of content.

Meanwhile, the oversight committee, in addition to the above mentioned powers, will also have power to block access to content.
