Hourman DC Movie In Development

Warner Bros. and DC Films are developing a new movie for Hourman. The last few years have seen WB and DC work tirelessly to create a mega-popular movie universe with DC characters. The initial plan with Zack Snyder was announced after Man of Steel's release and included movies through 2020. The studios are now moving forward with a DC Extended Universe that likely won't involve the filmmaker after the release of Zack Snyder's Justice League on HBO Max.

There are dozens of DC movies in various stages of development at the moment, but only a handful of them have official release dates. The Suicide Squad is the only movie slated for release in 2021, other than the Snyder Cut. Next year will see the release of The Batman, The Flash, and Aquaman 2, while 2023 only has Shazam: Fury of the Gods officially set. Yet, DC and WB are hard at work on long-gestating titles, like Black Adam, and newer projects, like Blue Beetle. Now, the studios are moving forward with plans for another DC movie.

According to a report from Deadline, the DC hero, Hourman, is getting a movie of his own. Hourman will be written by Gavin James and Neil Widener, who have previously been hired to work on San Andreas 2 and Now You See Me 3. A few different characters have taken on the Hourman mantle in the comics, and it is so far unclear which one will be at the center of the solo movie. WB and DC will get extra help on Hourman from Chernin Entertainment, the production company behind the Planet of the Apes reboot.

For those unfamiliar with Hourman, the character first appeared in the pages of a comic in 1940. Ken Fitch and Bernard Baily introduced him in Adventure Comics #48. The original Hourman is known as Rex Tyler, a chemist who creates a synthesis that enables him some superpowers for one hour only. Rex's son, Rick Tyler, later took over the mantle and is the more widely known version of Hourman. There is also an alternate universe version of Hourman, an android modeled after Rex, who went by Matthew Tyler.

This isn't the first time that DC has developed a Hourman project. DC and The CW previously had hopes of giving Hourman a show in the Arrowverse. Those plans never came to fruition, but one version of Hourman did appear in the popular small-screen universe. Patrick J. Adams played the Rex Tyler version of Hourman in two episodes of Legends of Tomorrow. Lou Ferrigno Jr. and Cameron Gellman also played Rex and Rick in Stargirl. With this new Hourman project only having just been announced, there's still a long way to before fans will likely learn what iteration of the character will be at the center of this movie, who will play him, or when the film will be released.
