Avatar 2 star, Stephen Lang, hints that his character Miles Quaritch has a fascinating arc in the upcoming installments. Quaritch was the villain of the original installment; a greedy military man, he stopped at nothing in the attempt to obtain the abundant wealth of Pandora's natural resources. However, the character's future remained unclear until Lang revealed that his journey with Quaritch is not only far from over, but is about to get even more interesting.

It's been over 11 years since the original Avatar film was released, and a long 11 years of wondering what will happen to Miles Quaritch. The last seen of his character was when he was stopped by Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) in an attempt to go kill a vulnerable Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) while he was wired to his Avatar body in the final battle. Quaritch was then presumably killed by Neytiri after she shot him several times in the chest with arrows. The villain's inevitable return to the upcoming installments is currently unknown.

According to comingsoon.net, the 68-year-old actor promises that his character will not only make a return, but will undergo an arc of "extreme growth" and "areas of regression" over the course of the next four Avatar films. Check out Lang's full quote below:

I’m not gonna say, ‘No, he’s absolutely the same'. I think he’s an incredibly fascinating character and he wouldn’t be back if Jim Cameron wasn’t fascinated in him as well and kind of bent on seeing where he goes. Where does that character lead him as a writer, as a director? And where does it lead me as an actor? And so, I think you can absolutely look for some areas of extreme growth in the character; and then probably areas of regression in the character as well, hopefully, over a period of four more films. Of course, we need him to be very, very interesting, where, by the end you’ve taken a journey, or you’ve witnessed a character go on a life journey that was pretty interesting. You know, that you were glad that you could observe. So that’s what we’re trying to do.

Despite the teased ups-and-downs that Quaritch will undergo in his character arc, it is fair to assume that upon his initial return, fans will see him more bloodthirsty for revenge than ever before. However, it is worth noting that although many believe Quaritch is going to undergo a villain-to-hero arc, director James Cameron says otherwise. When filming on the sequels began in 2017, Cameron confirmed that Lang's character will not only return, but will remain as the franchise's antagonist, saying that "There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherfucker through all four movies."

The success of the first Avatar film, even 11 years after its release, proves that the upcoming Avatar sequels have a lot to live up to. However, news of Quaritch's return and his complicated character arc should ease the minds of skeptical fans. The reanimation of the presumably dead character will be the authentic Sci-Fi experience that audiences are anticipating, and the journey that follows will leave fans loving, while also hating, the iconic villain.
