Lanarkshire man loses Sky legal battle after making thousands of pounds through illegal streaming

A Lanarkshire man has been found guilty of breaching copyright this week after he made thousands of pounds by supplying hyperlinks links to watch Sky TV shows on YouTube and Reddit.

Sky was granted an interim interdict against Alex Cherrie on Tuesday, April 6 at Edinburgh's Court of Session after finding he was behind YouTube and Reddit channels providing access to shows which are behind a paywall.

In winning the groundbreaking legal battle, the ruling could set a new precedent for media companies seeking to protect their copyright from people who set up links, social media profiles or online forums that allow others to bypass their paywalls.

Cherrie, from North Lanarkshire, had nearly 100,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel which was set up in 2016. It was viewed more than 16 million times.

He had more than 51,000 users across the Subreddits and had 95,000 users on the YouTube Account, and was charging users up to £17 a month to stream the channels.

The court heard that he had been providing hyperlinks to shows including A League of Their Own, Cop Squad, Thronecast and Portrait Artist of The Year under accounts with names of Cherzo and Cherzo1.

An investigation was carried out which led to Cherrie being identified as the operator.
