Cate Blanchett to star in Todd Field’s directorial comeback film TAR

It has been 15 years since the critical success of Todd Field’s drama film Little Children, and now Deadline brings word that the acclaimed filmmaker is finally making his feature directorial comeback in the form of a new drama film for Focus Features. Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett has officially signed on for the leading role in Field’s upcoming film titled TAR.

Plot details about TAR are still being kept under wraps, but the production is expected to begin in September in Berlin. On top of directing, Field will also serve as a producer through his Standard Film Company banner along with Emjag Productions’ Alexandra Milchan and Scott Lambert.

Field is best known for his directorial work in critically-acclaimed films, 2001’s In the Bedroom and 2006’s Little Children, which both earned multiple Academy Awards nominations. Even though TAR will be his first feature directorial project in a long while, Field has been attached to numerous projects throughout his 15-year directing hiatus. This includes a film about the Mexican Revolution, which was supposed to be led by Leonardo DiCaprio; a coming-of-age baseball project; and a limited series adaptation of Jonathan Franzen’s Purity which Daniel Craig would lead.

Cate Blanchett is currently in production for Lionsgate’s live-action film adaptation of Borderlands, which reunites her with director Eli Roth and Jack Black, whom she had both worked together on The House with a Clock in Its Walls. She will also next be seen in a few high-profile projects, including Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up, and James Gray’s Armageddon Time, which all feature their own all-star ensemble casts.
