Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker almost featured the Millennium Falcon's creator. The third and final film of Disney's sequel Star Wars trilogy was released in theaters in December 2019 and brought the Skywalker saga to an uneven conclusion. The execution of Emperor Palpatine's return, Kylo Ren's redemption, and the true reveal of Rey's lineage divided audiences. Many fans have become fascinated with the idea of alternate cuts or previous iterations of the movie before J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio took over.

The original plan for Star Wars 9 included Jurassic World's Colin Trevorrow directing, but he exited the blockbuster a few months before Star Wars: The Last Jedi's release. While his script, titled Star Wars: Duel of the Fates, did leak online shortly after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker released, only a glimpse of different ideas Abrams toyed with including have become known. Thanks to a newly revealed piece of concept art for the movie, it appears he considered introducing the creator of the Millennium Falcon.

RELATED: Star Wars' Original Millennium Falcon Design (& Why Lucas Changed It)

Concept artist Phil Saunders uploaded the new piece of art for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to his ArtStation profile recently. It shows Daisy Ridley's Rey and the sequel trilogy's favorite droid BB-8 in a new location. Saunders says this was meant to be the home of the Millennium Falcon's creator. The concept art is dated March 2018, confirming it is an idea from a version of the script Abrams and Terrio developed. Saunders mentions that the script called for Rey to find the original designer in search of a piece of hardware that could help stop the First Order. He also revealed that the creator's design was based around Dame Judy Dench, who Lucasfilm was eyeing for the role.

Even though Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker didn't ultimately include this story thread, it is cool to see what could've been. Saunders revealed the creator lives on another desert planet in the galaxy far, far away. Her home is carved into the top of a mesa, according to the artist, and affords the location with the unique design that is featured here. In terms of why Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker went in another direction, it is possible this was replaced with the C-3PO programming sub-plot. The search for a specialized device and individual is quite similar to that story, and this could've been where the First Order Kill Switch originally was set to appear.

Although Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker didn't take advantage of this great piece of art, Lucasfilm has shown a willingness to repurpose ideas in future projects. This could mean there's still hope for the Millennium Falcon's creator to appear later on. The future of Star Wars stories makes it a bit difficult to pinpoint how this could happen. The creator would be a natural fit in any continuations of Solo: A Star Wars Story as the Millennium Falcon continues to take damage and change. It would even be fun to see the Falcon's creator surface in The Mandalorian and provide Din Djarin with a new ship since the Razor Crest is destroyed. But now that the Falcon belongs to Rey after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, perhaps this interaction can still happen whenever her story continues.
