A new clip from Warner Bros.'s upcoming Mortal Kombat film shows Scorpion and Sub-Zero going toe-to-toe. The latest movie adaptation of the popular video game franchise of the same name f0llows a young MMA fighter, Cole Young, who becomes embroiled in the interdimensional conflict after discovering his true heritage. Young becomes acquainted with video game legends including Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, and Liu Kang as he fights to defend Earthrealm from Outworld.

Anyone familiar with the video game series will know that Mortal Kombat is most famous for its gratuitous violence. The fighters engage in one-on-one martial arts bouts spilling plenty of blood. Gory finishing moves called fatalities see characters stab, tear, and sometimes cannibalize their opponents. It simply wouldn't be Mortal Kombat without the carnage. Lewis Tan, who plays Cole in the film, says gore will be present in this adaptation but that it will be tasteful.

A clip shared to YouTube by Bloody Disgusting shows Scorpion and Sub-Zero face off in our first taste of combat. The 27-second video sees the pair duke it out in a frozen arena seen in previous promotional material. Sub-Zero creates a blade out of ice and holds his own until Scorpion appears to get the better of him with his iconic kunai on a chain. Before Scorpion can finish Sub-Zero off, he slips away by creating an ice clone of himself. Check out the clip for yourself below:

Though it's under 30 seconds, the clip leaves a good impression of what the action will look like in Mortal Kombat. Their iconic abilities and special powers have been seamlessly integrated into their fighting styles. Without providing too much story context, the short sequence highlights the set design and camerawork that compliments their fluid combat. Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero demonstrate impressive martial arts skills. All that's missing is the gratuitous gore.

Any good signs are a blessing, as video game adaptations are famously hit or miss, and Mortal Kombat adaptations have demonstrated both ends of the spectrum. The first is regarded as one of the best video game films of all time, while its sequel was widely panned and ended hopes for a third entry. There are indications the 2021 reboot will turn out for the best, as early Mortal Kombat reviews call the film violently fun. If the rest of the action matches the quality of this clip, then fans are certainly in for a treat.
