Popcorn Time and its users take lawsuit for movie piracy

Recommended Posts

Unsurprisingly, the Popcorn Time is involved in yet another controversy. This time, a group of movie studios filed a lawsuit against the torrent streaming “service”. In addition to suing Popcorn Time and its users, other companies (Wicked Technology and Voxility) are in the sights of independent producers.

Studios sue Popcorn Time and two more companies

According to TorrentFreak, the group consists of studios like Fallen Productions, Voltage Holdings and Millennium Funding. The companies claim that the Popcorn Time platform contributes to the distribution of pirated copies of their productions.

The group of studios started to act at the root of the problem, putting pressure on others involved: several users are being sued; Wicked Technology (owner of VPN.ht), the VPN platform used by Popcorn Time; and Voxility, responsible for hosting – again, for violating copyright.

The producers report that Voxility has received several complaints against Popcorn Time for infringing activities. However, the company took no action. “Voxility continued to provide services for Wicked despite knowledge of piracy notices,” reports the group in the lawsuit. “Wicked actively promotes its VPN service as a tool to use the famous movie piracy application Popcorn Time,” he adds.

In addition, the studios want VPN.ht to mandatorily provide the names behind PopcornTime.app. The lawsuit is being filed with the help of lawyers Kerry Culpepper and Timothy Hyland. Culpepper, from Hawaii (USA), is already known in the industry for acting in the fight against piracy of websites and other platforms.
