International coalition promotes coordinated combat against pirated IPTV services

Recommended Posts

Acoalition formed by entities from several countries is monitoring, identifying and collecting evidence to assist in aggressive lawsuits against pirated IPTV services .

The International Broadcaster Coalition Against Piracy (IBCAP) represents more than 140 television channels from Europe, the Middle East, South Asia and also from Brazil.

The group's idea is to carry out coordinated judicial attacks, with the objective of making unauthorized services and retailers liable, in addition to closing platforms that distribute content that violates copyright .

IBCAP has technical support from NAGRA, the digital TV division of the Kudelski Group, which identifies and gathers evidence for the coordination of lawsuits.

According to IBCAP, the actions have proved to be quite effective.

Last week, for example, a United States court ordered an owner of pirated IPTV sites to pay $ 16.80 million in damages (R $ 96.97 million at the current price), in addition to the termination of illegal and illegal services. the transfer of 15 domains to an IBCAP member.

In the past five years, the IBCAP has accumulated victories in more than 20 similar lawsuits.

The measures include court orders that extend to content delivery networks (CDNs) and internet service providers (ISPs).

“We will be relentless in working with our members to end these services. If they are not in compliance, all available legal measures will be considered and used as necessary, including seeking damages and extensive legal actions that extend to CDNs, ISPs, retailers and others. The enforcement of judgments against retailers resulted in the bankruptcy of these stores or individuals, ”said Chris Kuelling, executive director of IBCAP.

“Global content piracy cheats content creators and erodes consumer confidence. NAGRA continues to monitor, gather and act on intelligence to equip strategic industry alliances, such as that of IBCAP, with compelling evidence that leads to successful actions against those involved in pirated operations and the distribution of illicit content, "he concludes. Pascal Metral, vice president of legal affairs and head of NAGRA's anti-piracy, intelligence and litigation investigations.
