Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon supports the popular choice of casting WWE superstar The Miz as Johnny Cage. The long-awaited reboot of Mortal Kombat has arrived, focusing on characters like Sonya Blade and introducing Cole Young to audiences. Still, for all of its bloody action and mythology, the absence of Cage fueled plenty of speculation.

That speculation was cooled down thanks to an ending scene that promised Cage’s debut if a Mortal Kombat sequel happens. Still, the question of who should get to portray Cage remains. Miz, a decorated champion in WWE and one of the company’s most well-known active competitors, has now received a significant endorsement.

RELATED: Mortal Kombat Spin-Offs Would Be Better For Johnny Cage Than A Sequel

Boon, who co-created Mortal Kombat with John Tobias, has voiced his support for Miz on social media. The exchange took place after Miz posted a viral bit of fan art to show that he would be the right choice to portray Johnny Cage in the Mortal Kombat sequel. Boon gave Miz the thumbs up, agreeing that the two-time WWE champion made a compelling case for himself. You can check out the exchange below.

Miz has been a consistent choice to play Cage for years, long before a reboot of Mortal Kombat had even gained steam. That’s because, for long stretches of his career, and particularly during a period in 2014-2015, Miz’s gimmick drew heavy inspiration from Cage. With sunglasses, movie star looks, and a sizable ego, the wrestler was openly crafting his character on the basis of Cage. Miz also harkens back to Cage in another way, given that he’s a capable grappler that is nonetheless underestimated by his opponents. Miz could draw on these past experiences to bring Cage to the big screen, while also relying on the fact that he’s displayed an ability to work in both action and comedic settings. Mortal Kombat would likely be an ideal project for him in that sense, allowing for plenty of action while avoiding the self-seriousness of The Marine movies he’s starred in.

It’s true that there are other worthy candidates as well. Justin Hartley, perhaps best-known for his role as Kevin on This Is Us, comes to mind. But it could be argued that casting Miz comes with its own specific benefits. Given that there’s a fair amount of crossover between fans of wrestling and Mortal Kombat aficionados, Miz would be a draw for any potential sequel. And, as a bonus, Hollywood could land itself another leading man. After taking a chance on John Cena and Dave Bautista, the two former WWE regulars are now routinely chosen for big action blockbusters. Given an opportunity, Miz could very well be next.
